1981 Detroit Road Bridge partial demolition.
These are photos of the last phase of the partial demolition of the old Detroit Road bridge, which had become redundant with the building of a replacement structure next to it. Connecting the cities of Lakewood and Rocky River, Ohio, the bridge spanned the east and west bluffs of the Rocky River Valley. It employed two parallel main concrete arches to support the majority of its span. When these photos were snapped the eastern terminus, most of the bridge deck and one of the main arches had already been demolished with the last main arch being prepared for its demolition. The western terminus of the bridge had been preserved. The date of these photos is approximate, with a fudge-factor of several weeks. (These pictures are originally photographic slides and much noticeable detail didn't make it through the scanning process. Using "picnik" software provided by Google, digitally enhanced images are shown next to the originals.)
