Taize

We spent a week at Taize joining in the schedule of the brothers who lived here. The bells called us to pray together three times a day. We met a lot of wonderful people here and were very encouraged by what is happening with this community. One of the people we met is a photographer and she took some pictures for us. Ghost Village

We stayed in an abandoned village on the island of Lesvos. The farmer chose this place for the view, and it was very beautiful. The village had 30 buildings, but no permanent residents and we were surprised one morning to see the building next to ours had blown over in the night.

Athens

Three hours by train, 21 hours by ferry boat, four by bus and we arrived in Athens, dumped uncermoniously near the city center in a new level of not knowing the language. Our hostel is a few minutes walk from the Parthenon in the heart of the old city where cars are not allowed. There is great music drifting in our window and we are loving it.

Bologna

We had a wonderful time staying with our friends who are teaching English in Italy for a while. It was our base camp for all of the Italy traveling and, feuled by delicious gelato and great cappucinos, we burned the candle at both ends while we where there.

Switzerland

Money is a burden, so we decided to go to Switzerland and unburden ourselves. This being the country with the highest standard of living in the world and the poor little dollar not doing very well on the world market. It was extremely beautful and we did, by chance, get to attend a worship time in one of the large cathedrals in the city. It was refreshing and the first time that we have been to a church to attend the service here in Europe.

Muenster

We spent a few days with Sarah's former host fmaily in Munster. It was a sweet haven of rest for us and a time to catch our breath before we plunged back into traveling.

Cologne

We spent the afternoon in Koeln, or Cologne, on our way to Muenster. The Koelner Dom is the largest Gothic cathedral in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. It is impressive inside and out. On this day there was a large demonstration by Turkish students in front of the Dom. They seemed to be protesting Turkey's involvement with terrorism.

Trier

Uwe sells cheese in Trier once a week and took us each along on separate days. The city was founded by the Romans and is famous as the home of Emperor Constantine. Trier boasts the best Roman ruins in Germany.

Schafskaeserei

Literally the "sheep cheesery." We stayed here about a week and half and got learn a lot about making cheese and some about caring for the animals. The family sells the cheese at two different local markets and through their website, http://www.schafskaeserei-poch.de.

We cruised up to Amsterdam to see our dear friend Christa who was traveling from the states. We had a lot of fun and it was very refreshing to spend time with her.

Gemeinschaft in Klosterzimmern

Gemeinschaft in Klosterzimmern is part of a strange religious movement known as the Twelve Tribes that started in Tenessee during the Jesus movement in the 1970's. It has several groups in Europe and South America, but most are in the US. They have several large farms in different countries and try to live self sufficiently. They also run a chain of cafes called Common Grounds and have other side businesses like installing solar panels and some bakeries. Our time among them was interesting, however quite tiresome and rather trying.

Regensburg

This is a very cool city, it was the first bridge accross the Danube built in the middle ages. We can't remember the details here, quickly cities are becoming "another cool city in Europe" with beautiful buildings and lots of history.

Buchenau

This is the second farm that we stayed at. It is about 5 km away from the Czech Republic in the Bohemian region. Located in a national forest, it is a very beautiful place. It was not quite what we expected and we opted to leave quickly, there not being a lot of work for us here.

Hamburg

We started our Europe adventure with a surreal day in Dublin and quickly flew on to Germany. We have had a lovely week in Hamburg staying with Sophie, Sarah's foreign exchange sister from High School. She has been a lovely host and we have really enjoyed our time in the city.

Back Packing In Escalante

A backpaking Trip with my wife, father, sister and friends along the escalante river. We entered the Canyon in the Egypt trailhead and exited the Twenty Five Mile Wash. There are three side canyons, Neon, Ringtail and Baker that we explored. Enjoy!

EWB Mali Project

These pictures are from an Engineers Without Borders project to Mali, Africa. We did several projects to help with the water situation in the village including: drip irrigation, well repair, well installation and construction of a water catchment basin.
