Futbol vs. PC Mali

8-11.Jun: The PC Deputy Director visited both Mali and Mauritania, prompting PC Mali to challenge us to a soccer match on the border. The game took place in a cow/goat/camel pasture, in the midst of a sand-storm, and attracted quite an audience as people gathered to watch tubabs make fools of themselves at their game, but we came out victorious, again. These are some photos from traveling with the delegation across the country, stopping at volunteer sites, and wreaking havoc on small communities.

Dakar, Senegal for WAIST (West African International Softball Tournament) - where we played softball, among other things - and somehow managed to win it all (that's a three-peat.) WAIST photos are not mine (as I could only partake in the nonsense between innings...)

Thielaw & Ali Guelel

I went with a Rep. from PC Washington to evaluate past projects involving pirogues (canoes) in two Pulaar villages outside of Boghe. In both villages, the communities put on demonstrations using the pirogues and otherwise showed their excitement for life. An incredible day.

Girl's Basketball in Mauritania!

The girls at the Girls Mentoring Center in Boghe are playing basketball, most for the first time. This "Club de Basket" provides an environment for girls to be active and express themselves athletically - a rare opportunity here, where personal expression of any form is not embraced or encouraged.

Daali Diop's Baptism

My compound hosted the baptism for its newest member, Daali Diop, and I got the opportunity to photograph people without offending them or creating an awkward situation (it happens too often on its own). This is my family.
