South Buller Pass Hike

A pleasant Autumn hike up to the South Buller Pass.Interesting to see the patchwork of burned areas from the prescribed burns from this past summer.A tad chilly in the wind at the Pass,but a fine day outdoors nonetheless.Also it was pretty cool to see some scrambles I've done in the area from a different perspective.

Bertha Peak

A gorgeous Autumn day saw me to the top of Bertha Peak. I followed a great trail to Bertha Lake and after a brief yet ugly bushwhack,I ascended a dry drainage to climber's right of the wet main one coming from a hidden basin above me. There were stunning views all round despite this peak top being so low! Descent was quick and easy except for the crux of threading my way through all the day hikers around and below Lower Bertha Falls.One more Kane route done!

CEGNFS & Mt.Murray

I've always been hesitant of this 2 peak scramble due to the confusion regarding the correct ascent drainage on CEGNFS.But Chris & I were keen to try and we managed to tag both summits on the day!We used the east side trail along French Creek and found the proper drainage.On the ascent,after the drainage gates,the scree/rubble was TERRIBLE!! But we forged upwards and eventually gained the summit of CEGNFS for photos and refueling.Then we descended to the col and headed up a faint trail to the summit block of Murray and around it to the SW ridge and a moderate scramble to the top.Perfect weather allowed us to relax & enjoy the enthralling vistas for nearly an hour.The descent went quickly and we were soon back at our proper drainage. SO glad we persevered...it was worth every painful step!

Syncline Mtn.

I planned for and tagged the first summit of Syncline. Very thankfully,I had read of the many tribulations of others finding the proper NE ascent ridge.I found and parked at the right spot,then took a compass bearing and forged through "light"(??) forest and was soon on the open ridge.After that it was a straight forward steep hike to the summit through the "Gates". Stellar views abound! Of note here are the views to the North of the devastating July 2003 Lost Creek Fire. Many thanks Vern,for the advice on parking!

Newman Peak-Skionkop Ridge

Another awesome day in Waterton National Park! This is really only a steep hike but the effort is worth it! I gained the top of Newman Peak and then traversed along the ridge and over to the top of Skionkop Ridge. I was tripping all over the place because I was SO enthralled by the views that I wasn't watching where I was going! I highly recommend this outing and bring a bike. I will return for Avion Ridge!

Brachiopod Mtn.

What a LONG slog from the Fish Creek parking lot for such a low peak...(it's best done with an overnight at Hidden Lake or Baker Lake) I gave up on tagging Anthozoan as I was low on time and energy! But it was a glorious day weather wise with very interesting views in all directions.I was sure glad I had my bike for the FAST and THRILLING ride back down the Temple Lodge fire road!

Mt.Rae - 10 Years later

This was my second time up Rae. The scree is still gruesome as ever! But the photos this time are far better. Dazzling views from this high peak in all directions. A wonderful and enjoyable day once away from the hordes in Ptarmigan Cirque!

Mt.Galwey

This is a rather popular scramble on the Red Rock Parkway in Waterton NP as there is a trail all the way! The window area and the crux are great fun! (Just make sure you have LONG legs!) Cool views which are great for planning more scrambles in the area.

Mt.Weed

The "direct gully" (Kane's gully) for ascent was full of snow and ice so I opted for the safer SE col for both ascent & descent. It was a LONG plod up the reasonably stable scree/rubble to the col,then a fun traversing scramble to the summit.The wind was up,so the stay on the summit was brief as I was freezing! VERY gratifying views for all the effort and a well worthwhile scramble.

Sofa Mtn.

Perfect weather for a stellar scramble! I used Nugara's ascent route for this Waterton peak and Bob Spirko's descent route...both with their own fun bits,in order to loop the area.The highlights were the dazzling views and meeting the Mountain Goat! Always fun naming surrounding and nearby mountains!

Peaks 412443 & 409435 - Just south of Tiara Peak

These peaks are up the north north fork of Canyon Creek as described in Gillean Daffern's new KCTG Vol.2 4th ed. Nothing technical but it's a long slog up the creek beds and not pleasant for descent on a hot day! Tried to bag the 2 peaks nearby from her #64 description but couldn't find the gumption nor energy to negotiate the olistolith ridge to them!

I found this delightfully interesting hike/scramble in Gillean Daffern's NEW Vol.1 of her Kananaskis Country Trail Guide(#101) and due to possible inclement weather I wanted a low and easy day. Luckily it never rained or snowed on me on the day! Worth the trip for the great views of the Opals!

This was a highly enjoyable "Nugara" scramble,albeit with a rather windy day up top! I took the alternate descent route and suggest that if you do this scramble use it...it's a riot!

Table Mtn.

Day 4 of scrambles in the Castle Crown area. I was somewhat fatigued at this point so I opted out of Nugara`s ascent route and instead took the `tourist`trail to the top! Fascinating area...I will return to explore further!

Loaf Mtn.

Loaf Mtn. was my day 3 of a 4 day scrambling visit to the Castle area. It's a Nugara route,but do make sure you ascend the correct drainage. It's an easy walk-up to the summit once you're on the upper ridge. The clouds rolled in on me,ruining splendid views to be had! It's a super bike ride back to the car...IF one has brakes on the bike! I didn't! It's amazing I'm still alive!

Day 2 of 4 days in the Castle area. A Kane route where the weather socked in so badly that I had to abort my attempt on Allison Peak nearby! I was also very dismayed at the carnage left by the random campers along the shorelines of Window Mtn. Lake. Some day I'll return to tag Allison!

Crowsnest Mtn.

Day 1 of 4,scrambling in the Castle area. It's a popular ascent so get an early start! Lousy weather,as usual, prevented nice summit views! A word of caution here! Ensure you're the ONLY party in the tight gully where the chain is. It's a bowling alley! Wear a helmet!

Mt. Strachan

A superb Nugara scramble! Had perfect weather on the day and despite really wet and muddy cycling in and out, it was a most enjoyable day. Carnarvon Lake is spectacular!! Amazing colours at every turn! Just a steep hike from the lake to the summit. Fantastic views all around. Speedy descent on the bike on return with lots of puddles to splash through. It was nice to be able to rinse off in the Highwood River near the end and cool off on this hot day!

Mt.Odlum

Great scramble! Really enjoyed this one! Perfect Autumn weather on the day helped! We took the alternate descent route which was easier and all went well until near the river crossing where we somehow got confused in the bush and took 45 minutes to find our ford and sandals.It was also cool to hear the Elk trumpeting in the forest nearby!

Mt.Bogart via West Ridge

This was a SUBLIME and memorable scramble!!!! Absolutely bluebird weather sure helped! Followed Nugara's route description and met only one minor crux, easily dealt with head-on.Elevation gain of 1400M. A 10hr. day for me, but I stopped many times to suck up the vistas! I highly recommend this scramble!

Mt.Yukness

Only bagged the North peak as time was scarce. This an utterly beautiful area. It was hot and clear which made it a perfect day! I'd return in a heartbeat!

Lineham Ridge

Wet,misty,cloudy,slippery,SCARY! But fun! Ascended the Picklejar Lakes trail,then the northwest ridge of Lineham as per Nugara. Decided not to try GR593982 as the weather was so iffy! We created our own descent route that eventually met up with the Picklejar trail.....that was interesting!

Piggy Plus

WOW !!!!! This was an absolutely enchanting Nugara route! It's a real gem! Views are stupendous at every turn! There's some great scrambling to be had from the col to the summit as well! The approach valley is one of the loveliest I've ever seen.....what a STELLAR day !!!!

Holy Cross Mtn.

Followed Nugara's route for ascent of NE ridge and used the East face for descent. Somewhat wet on latter part of descent as we got hit by a vicious lightning storm! Thankfully we were far enough down the mountain to be out of danger. Still tossed the ice axes away from us though! Shortly after that we met a Black bear on the trail. Stressful afternoon, but a fine scramble.

Copper Mtn.

After reading of the misadventures of others on this scramble,I took great care in researching and locating the proper route up and down! Once at the campground,a climbing traverse to climber's right soon got me to the base of the right route.From there it's a STEEP grunt all the way to the top...but well worth it! I descended the same way and had a BLAST on the bike ride back to the car!!!

Another fine Nugara scramble! For me,today involved all my skills! Route finding,bushwhacking,uphill scree grunt,hands-on (for dear life!) scrambling,super fast scree run downhill and lastly a mind numbing plod back down a rocky dry creek bed to the car. Loved it!

Caldron Peak

Of the many 100's and 100's of visits to the Canadian Rockies,this hike/scramble has to be in the top three. It's SO beautiful! Audacious and stimulating views everywhere...it's truly mind boggling! I'll return for sure! Pick a warm clear day and bring along an extra memory card!!

Victoria Peak

This was my first Nugara route in the Castle which would result in many more trips to this wonderful and different locale. Very different geology and the incredible colours are awesome! This was a fun scramble with marvelous views. Now,two years later I have accepted the fact that it can get somewhat breezy on these peaks! I'd like to return to Victoria and access it via its ridge to the south.

Turtle Mountain

A healthy hike with a 1230m height gain to the 2nd summit for neat views of the Frank slide. But the trip from the 1st summit to the 2nd summit was,for me,nerve wracking,as I kept thinking that the mountain would slide again with me on it! Didn't stay long!

Mist Mountain

I used the south route as opposed to the Kane route for this summit. A 1500m day but well worth the effort for the vast vistas. I descended an exceptional scree run on return.......always a super blast!

The Fist

I used a slightly different ascent route than Kane's route. I kept on going along the meadow trail until almost below Smuts,then headed uphill on more open slopes to the Smuts/Fist col. No bushwhack involved! Fun scramble with great views.

Limestone Mtn.

At the end of a stellar scrambling season I did my first (of many to come) Nugara route. Tagged the "peak" and descended the gully just to the east of the ascent ridge. Thankfully the water level of Rocky Creek was low enough as I had to cross and re-cross it a few times. The wind was screaming up there on the day and I had a tough time remaining upright! Cool little hill!

Having been in this basin before,to do Stuart Knob & Helena Ridge,I was keen to be done with those LONG slogs up to Rockbound Lake by tagging Castle! Easy but long scramble. I quite liked the broad grassy terrace above the lake.

I used Kane's route for this one.Getting into and out of the basin was quite tiring but it was made up for with the wonderful hands-on scrambling on the NE ridge. It was a long hot day but I'm sure glad I went!

Mt.Remus

A wonderfully diverse day with all the elements of scrambling in the Canadian Rockies rolled into one scramble! Bike in,ford a river,light bushwhack,steep scree slog uphill,route finding,chimney,EXTREMELY FAST scree run on descent,re-ford the river to cool off the hot feet and all topped off with a quick and easy downhill bike ride back to the car! Perfect!

Mt.Nestor

Stunning views from this summit despite cloudy weather. I ascended this Kane route using the "trough" and went down the alternate way. Very interesting! The crux today were the bloody helicopters full of gawking tourists buzzing too low for my liking!

TV Peak via Protection Mtn.

I used the Protection Mtn. trail (12.4km North of Castle Mtn. junction) to ascend TV Peak.Good trail up to an old mine site and then scramble up to Protection Ridge,then SE along it towards TV Peak.A few tricky spots as I neared the summit but otherwise just a LONG trudge! Returned the same way. Nice way to celebrate Canada Day!

Mt.Lawson

I always dreaded this scramble and now I know why! It was a bloody(literally!) bitch for me! Firstly,even with good route info,I lost the proper ascent trail in the forest and bushwhacked for 1/2 hour to begin the day! Then steep crappy rubble all the way to the top,made for exhausting & sometimes frightening times. At one point,while trying to surmount a 2 metre high step,I very badly scraped the front of my thigh,drawing lots of blood & giving me lots of pain. This all annoyed me to no end to the point that I got mad and forged on to the summit in no time! Crazy yet successful day!

Mt.Norquay West Peak

In Sept.2000 I attempted this Kane route,but was stopped (in terror!) by the crux upclimb on the traverse to the east peak! After 7 years of scrambling experience I now found the crux to be rather easy to negotiate! Many thanks to Sonny for the alternate return route from the west peak. Great scramble!

Heart Mtn.Twins

Needed to get out and tune up the legs and this early season scramble to the top of one of the twin peaks behind (SE) the top of Heart Mtn. did just that! Got slammed by rain on the descent of Heart but still enjoyed the day!

Pilot Mountain

I`d been craving this fine Kane scramble for quite some time and today was the day to nail it! So glad I did as the views were INTENSE!!! Lots of elevation gain was hardly noticed because I was being overwhelmed by the views! I`ll always cherish the memories of this day!

A scenic Kane scramble in a rather popular area! The trick for me,on ascent,was to stick to the spine of the middle ramp in order to avoid too much nasty rubble...that worked well! VERY smokey today....Damn!!

Tombstone South

On this Kane scramble I used the south ridge for ascent.On descent I went down the SW slope/gully which intersected a trail leading back to the Big Elbow trail. There was some tricky footing all day on rubble covered bedrock but otherwise a great and scenic scramble.

Once I finished thrashing through and up King Creek and getting above treeline,this Kane scramble became a delight to ascend! On descent I used King Crekk Ridge for variation and its cool views. A long day for me but well worth the effort!

This was an entertaining Kane scramble that I'd been yearning to do for many years. It's certainly one of my favourite scrambles now and I'd gladly re-do this and bag more than just peak #4. Didn't see any near-nude scramblers on this ascent!

A fun and diverse Canada Day scramble! I used a slightly different ascent/descent route than suggested by Kane and that proved to work out quite well...luckily! The crux of the day were the damned mosquitoes at the base of the mountain!

Mt.Bell

I used the Boom Lake approach route for ascent and descent. From the col to the summit was interesting as there are some pretty big and unstable quartzite blocks to work with! But the views were sublime! It was SO very hard to leave the summit with all the many peaks all around to identify! Great day!

Storm Mtn.(Banff)

My poor legs felt like the dead trees & stumps that I had to haul myself over at the base of the mountain,after I finished this scramble! And to top it off,the damn clouds rolled in when I was at the summit,preventing any decent views! DAMN! That's bloody frustrating after a 1500m workout! I wonder if I'll re-do this?

Grotto Mountain

This is the 2nd time I've been up this mountain! Back in 2002 I used the direct route. Today,using the ACC route,although not direct,was way more enjoyable! Of note on this outing is the fact that I'd finally bought my first digital camera and no longer had to shoot sparingly!

A straight forward Kane scramble up the SE gully. The views from the summit were totally SENSATIONAL!!!! I'd gladly do this again,especially now that I have a far better camera!

Narao Peak....almost!

Almost made it to the top! But after this and 2 other attempts I was defeated once more by this damned filibuster! Today I was SO close to the top when my legs cramped up very badly,preventing further progress! Barely made it down! I guess every serious scrambler has an adversary like this on their list. It's a super scenic area up there! Someday I'll tag it! I hope!

Mt.Whyte

Despite these crappy old film photos/mosaics, I really liked this scramble! The summit affords front row seats to the spectacular peaks in the Lake Louise area. The crux of the day,as usual in this area,were the crowds near the Lake!

Mt.Arethusa

Made it to the 5m downclimb/crux and backed off due to the fact that I was unsure of where the exact route went. The wind was howling up there too and that unnerved me,as well as making it hard to balance on the exposed ridge,not to mention give full attention to the job at hand! I know I made the right decision and will return someday to re-do this scramble! I did,though,totally enjoy the brief visit to this mountain!
