Early in the morning we walked to a catholic cathedral which looked like a typically European gothic cathedral, except mass was being said in chinese, and the stained glass had chinese calligraphy, peonies and bamboo motifs. We then took the metro to Peoples park which had people doing tai chi, playing checkers, and kids playing. We then walked around the surrounding streets, which alternated between being western and commerical with people stopping you every few seconds to try and sell you a watch, an ipad, or just "anything you want", and little alleyways which were completely old world chinese and full of people who ignored us as they sold each other fruits, vegetables, herbs, live frogs, eels, fish and chickens. We then walked to the Bund (riverfront park) to admire the skyscrapers. we then caught a taxi back to the hotel and met with many people from the conference to take a city tour that the conference organizers had arranged.
