Siem Reap Airport looks like some Bintan Resort!
Jetstar Asia transit cards
Going to Phnom Penh! Ha, one thing I learnt from this trip is the proper way to spell Phnom Penh :D
The rubbish at the dumpsite has accumulated so much that it has compacted into hills forming the natural landscape. People are foraging among the rubbish in this scene.
Dwellings at the dumpsite
Children at the dumpsite school
Haha, these 2 girls taught me how to play random hand games in Khmer :)
These are the padi fields in between the UNACAS orphanage and the church we reside in.
UNACAS has its own farm that allows it to earn about US$500 which can help subsidize its monthly US$6000 expenditure. UNACAS mainly relies on sponsorship and donations from kind samaritans to get by.
This is a mother pig...
This father pig is damn huge! Its size is almost comparable to that of a lion, it's that BIG.
This is Seiha's cat :) Think her friend gave it to her. Narong helps to feed it during mealtimes.
THE BODY
We took this photo with Narong before he went to school in the afternoon.
Nam and Malysa
Visiting the girls' dorms :) They sleep on triple decker beds. Some sleep on mats on the floor. Some share the same bed while some have the whole bed to themselves. Top row is me and Seiha. Bottom row is Eli, Chakriya, June and Chandry.
Malysa gave me this friendship band :) Took a photo of it for remembrance. I'll try to wear this band for the whole of Dec :)
The youths are practising for Sunday mass the next day. Narong is the singer leh!
Cheong Ek Memorial - Killing Fields
The skulls are categorized according to age. These were the clothes they found together with the skulls. When they washed the clothes, the water all turned out bloody.
Haha, I'm trying to use the Chinese High clocktower angle. Nice clouds :)
Magic Tree - This tree was used as a tool to hang a loudspeaker which made sounds louder than the cries of the victims while they were being executed.
Pieces of bones were found protruding out of the soil, so there were gathered and placed in a box.
Mass grave of victims without heads
The Khmer Rogue aka the Genocidal Polpot Regime, which lasted 3 years and 8 months, was comparable to that of the German Holocaust.
ba1 bao3 fan4
Toul Sleng Museum - This bed was used to chain political prisoners. The metal container is the poo box. The prisoners could empty their poo box everyday but if they were too weak to do so, the prison keepers would only wait until the poo box is full before doing so.
Each opening was used to contain one prisoner. It's scary how this area used to hold prisoners actually look like an animal sty. The people were treated like animals during the Khmer Rogue.
Another torture tool
Phnom Penh Central Market! So sad, we only got to spend 1h here, how are we supposed to buy everything we want?
This mini deli serves the Cambodian version of hotdog buns I guess. Yummy! :p
They placed scoops of ice cream inside the coconut husks! Yum :)
Nightview of Phnom Penh City from Asia Hotel. Asia Hotel has internet access & it was where I found out I didn't get into bio h3 :( At that moment, I felt jolted back into reality, bcoz all the while in Cambodia, I'd been able to keep all my troubles out of mind.
Some dwellings opposite our hotel. Actually this was taken from June & Patricia's room, my room has no view x(
That is Yu Rong, Yu Rong Fan #1, Yu Rong Fan #2, Yu Rong Fan Club Manager, Yu Rong Fan #3. Haha, apparently they like Yu Rong bcoz of his hair, lol :p
Chiva is model material, she's so pretty!
Reaksa and Mr Thomas. Reaksa is crying coz Hannah bullied her.
Reaksa stops crying. Don't you think Reaksa bears an uncanny resemblance to the Candy Yong Tau Foo aunty? We call her Candy! She's damn cute :)
Oh my, chao1 xiang4 :p
Reaksa took this photo herself!
Haha, oh my gosh, Reaksa's damn cute! She's eating Eli's cereal bar.
If you count the number of cups, you'll find out the number of children there are in UNACAS.
The children are super innovative. They make one super big swing from two swings by connecting them with a wooden plank. Amusing :p
Bora! She's not from the orphanage, she just dropped by for a day. Bora's hair is so nice and she's pretty too :)
Narong when he was a baby :D
Seiha! Haha, Narong has a picture of Seiha *wink wink*. Some American took the children at UNACAS to Angkor Wat sometime last year.
Narong actually looks quite hip in this photo, lol. Ooh, in case you were wondering, I was taking photos of his phots :p
Narong likes to sing and play the guitar :) He can play and sing lao2 shu3 ai4 da4 mi3 leh!
Heh, this was the only scadalous photo I could take of Jun Hong and Malysa. Apparently, Malysa likes Jun Hong, lol.
Accompanying the primary school kids to school! By foot!
At their primary school... You know all the schools in Cambodia look the same. Excluding the entrance, the other 3 sides are lined with a low building with a courtyard in the middle. There are some random food hawkers at the side of the courtyard, that's their canteen I guess.
Preview of Timetable - There's morning session and afternoon session.
Making Cambodian ice kachang!
Bought it for Pich :)
Flag raising during morning assembly
Huang cemetry!
That's Peter!
Harila! :) Harila is damn nice, as in her entire disposition, she's not possessive of her buddies, she's just nice to everyone. She taught us another way to fold hearts :)
Heart-Heart
Malysa and me :) Malysa is my buddy.
Lol, she purposely chose this spot herself.
Ha, I know why now :) She wanted the bushes as the backdrop.
Saray! Saray is Sing Yi's buddy.
Elizabeth! Elizabeth has a nice voice :) She likes Louis, she says Louis is cute, haha :D You know she actually wears makeup to school!
Cycling around the area! This photo was taken outside the church we live in. There's a bicycle shed in UNACAS where quite a number of the children own bikes to cycle to sch, mainly the sec sch and high sch kids. Haha, everyone was cycling that day :p
This is such a fun picture! :D It was taken in the playground in UNACAS.
Don't know who's that random boy, he gatecrashed our photo :p Top row from left: Sarah, Seiha, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, June, Soben Bottom row: Steffi, Sarah
That's Dy Rithy & Narong! I don't know why Narong likes doing that sign, so I just follow him anyways. Ooh, Rithy is a very inspiring person. I was actually asking him where he got his green rubber wristband coz I wanted to buy white rubber wristbands. Then, he gave the wristband to me & told me to pass it on when somone else likes it too, coz the wristband was also given to him by someone. Wow. I think he's one of the bigger kids that the younger kids look up to. He's usually the emcee for youth worship in church. He's 20.
Harila! :)
Sarah and Malysa acted as farmers in some dance they did for us during farewell performance.
This was taken outside the girl's dorm in the UNACAS orphanage.
Malysa before the performance. She actually went to pluck her eyebrows leh...
Coconut Dance
Fish Dance?
Some bamboo stilts performance
Celebration for November babies! The kindgarten children in the middle who include Reaksa damn cute!
Vituk and Pich :) Vituk was the one who told me about the Mumbai terrorist attacks and the Bangkok protests while we were scraping windows in the church hall.
Samai and Soben :)
Taking a pic fo the padi fields again
Some hut nearby the church hall. Some of us always gather to play cards there.
Some other hut near the church hall too. This is where we practise for our farewell performance.
Mr Sela, the director of UNACAS, and Sarah, YMCA Cambodia coordinator
Rescue is just further down the road from the church we're living in. Rescue is some centre for AIDS victims. The people from Rescue attended our farewell performance as well.
On the last day, saying goodbye from the bus :'(
Rui Ling sleep until damn cool ;p
Padi fields we came across along the way to Kampong Thom province from Phnom Penh
*snooze*
HOBBIT!
Thunborey Hotel
View of Siem Reap from Thunborey Hotel
Angkor Thom - City Temple
The gods and demons are carrying a long snake that helped churn some holy milk to make the holy water used in the temple.
Umm, some of the stone parts were looted?
It was a social custom for Cambodian woman to go topless during the Angkor period. According to the tour guide, that was what attracted some of the Chinese to stay here. So, Cambodians today have some Chinese blood too.
Scene of a hospital
The lingha and the yoni
Ms Li was saying we look like sisters bcoz we were wearing the same type of top, as in the style.
Fern taking photo, haha so cute :p
Elephant Terrace - This area used to be a stadium where the royalty would sit to watch elephant battles for entertainment.
Mr Low in his moment of soltitude :p
Korean BBQ!
This temple has a tree growing over it.
The roots actually extend all the way down from the roof to the ground. Removing the tree will spoil the entire structure of the temple.
Strangling fig
OAC photo :)
100% eutrophication - the algae in the river has completely formed a "green carpet" over the water surface. Cool!
More green carpets ;)
Right, so the temple with trees growing all over it is called the Ta Prohm temple. The Angkor area was abandoned for 600 years before people went back, by then the Angkor area was already overtaken by vegetation.
Angkor Wat - City Pagoda
Haha, I'm trying to do a Chinese High clocktower angle again :p
Yu Rong is Jing Ying's tu di
Intricate stone carvings - these looked new
Apparently this spot is one of the best places to take photos of the Angkor Wat bcoz you can see the reflection of the Angkor Wat in the water.
June, Jing Ying, Eli, me - we're mosquito net mates :) 4 of us squeezed into 1 mozzie net back at UNACAS for the 8 nights there
Ooh, do you see the reflection of the clouds in the water? Makes it look like cloudy water!
Apparently, we climbed up 65m of hill and 67m of temple to reach this hilltop to take in the view of the Angkor region.
The steps were so steep, they were almost walls :p
Em Somuch is our tour guide! So you can say Thanks Somuch! Lol :p He lost his entire family during the Polpot regime, survived by himself in a forest, worked as a trash collector & finally being the English speaking tour guide that he's today. He has 4 daughters but his wife passed away quite early on. He said his life was never happy but the amazing this is how jolly and amiable he is as a person.
Dinner at Cambodian Kitchen - Reunion Dinner!! :D From left: Jing Ying, Steffi, Jun Lin, Louis, Li Hong, Fern, Linette, Pat, June
Celia! You have cereal named after you! Saw this in the supermarket next to Cambodian kitchen.
Rice Soup Feeding Programme
Each hook holding their bags is labelled with their names and pictures, cool right... The experience at this Rice Soup place was funny bcoz it was just filled with washing. Wash toilets, wash floor, wash children's hands, whoa...
Grace Road - some stretches of it were done by past Hwa Chong OCIP Cambodia batches. Heh, actually quite glad we did our service at UNACAS instead of here bcoz UNACAS seems more fun!
The Boys Brigade Learning Centre - Can you imagine? This was actually be the place where our seniors did our teaching & where they settle their lodging & bathing, quite a stark contrast from UNACAS right?
Puppy!
On our US$1 per ride tuk tuk...
The guys who accompanied us, coz must always move with guys when guang4-ing the streets.
2 stars + 1 cresent moon = smiley face
Buffet dinner at Amazon Angkor Restaurant. We could also watch an Apsara Dance performance at the same time.
On the way to Siem Reap airport...
At Siem Reap Airport!
I wanted to take picture inside the Jetstar Asia aeroplane coz I thought the black seats were cool, then Jing Ying was totally diao at me -.-"
Photo with the napping Mr Low!
Mr Low ZZZzzzzzz....
