A decent storm or two deposited ~16-20 inches of snow at Pajarito Mountain. It was time to start hiking it for some powder runs. When the snow is good, I drop everything else and get a little OCD about hiking laps.

Day three of our RRG trip took us to the Great Arch and Solarium Walls of the Muir Valley Nature Preserve. Hot in the sun, perfect in the shade. We met up with friend Alex, from Pagosa Springs, CO, resulting in more climbing, less photographing.

Red River Gorge, Day 2. 2011-11-07

Second day at RRG we headed to the Chica Bonita Crag (not really recommended by us now), the Bob Marley Crag and the Drive-By Crag. Both Chica Bonita and Bob Marley were quiet. Drive-By was a scene so I climbed one route and we headed out. Another gorgeous, if not a bit too hot, day. No complaints!

Ski Pass Anthology, 1987 to 2008. Twenty years of Pajarito awesomeness.

I started skiing in 1986 and got my first season pass at Pajarito Mountain in 1987. I tried snowboarding for the first time in 1989 and by 1990 I was complete convert to snowboarding after buying an Avalanche Kick! snowboard. It's been great times ever since.

Fruita Mountain Biking Trip, 2011-10-06.

Andy, Bill and I made a trip to scenic and fun Fruita, CO for a four-day weekend of mountain biking some of the famous trails of the area. I'd never been to Fruita but had seen and heard many good things about the biking trails there. It was high time I came out of mountain biking retirement for some stellar riding.

Colorado Trail Running, 2011-08-13

Bill, Jeff, Tom and I made a weekend outing to run the last ~73 miles (segments 25-28) of the Colorado Trail from Molas Pass to Durango in a "fastpacking" fashion. We ran with light packs with a sleeping bag and tarp tent plus a few other essentials and were able to cover many, many miles of wildflower-laden, beautiful mountain territory.

For the past five years in a row the second weekend in July has meant a trip to Silverton to either compete in the Hardrock Hundred 100 mile mountain trail race or pace/crew for friends in the race. This year I went to Silverton with Dylan, Mom and Matt to crew and pace for Bill.

Wheeler Peak, NM. 2011-06-29

At 13,161', Wheeler Peak is the highest point of New Mexico. With time to kill on account of being evacuate from Los Alamos because of the raging Las Conchas Fire, we headed up Wheeler Peak. Allison had never been to the summit and the day was gorgeous for it.

Mount Hood, Oregon. 2011-06-25

Andy, Sarah, Mark and I had already had an extremely rewarding and productive week of climbing and skiing Mount Rainier, Mount Baker and Mount Saint Helens. We still had one more day and a bit of energy still left in our tanks so we headed south to climb Oregon's state high point, Mount Hood (11,249'). The weather was impeccible and we had a great morning.

Mount Baker, WA. Easton Glacier Route. 2011-06-22

After a super successful climb and ski of Mount Rainier's Fuhrer Finger route two days prior, we were excited to climb another Pacific NW volcano. We quickly set our sights on Mount Baker. Numerous parties make it a two day climb with a high camp but we were tired of lugging heavy packs and figured the relatively low altitude wouldn't be too hard on us high altitude dwellers so we opted for the one day climb and ski.

Mount Rainier, WA. Fuhrer Finger Route. 2011-06-19

At 14,411 feet, Mount Rainier looms over the Seattle skyline with serious prominence. Andy, Sarah, Mark and I made a week-long trip up to the Pacific NW to give us a seven days in which to nab a good weather window to climb the Fuhrer Finger route on Mount Rainier. We got lucky and the first full day we were in Washington the weather was forecasted to clear up that night. We packed up quickly and headed out and up into the clouds for an overnight trip for the climb.

Brian had been wanting to do this run for many years but in an average snow season the trails aren't clear on Easter. They were this year and it sounded interesting to me--a pilgrimage run from Santuario de Guadalupe in Santa Fe to Santuario de Chimayo some 38 miles to the north.

Bill, Brian, Andy, Sarah and I headed north on highway 285 to finally ascend San Antonio Mountain (10,908') after hundreds of times driving by it. We circumnavigated it and then ran up and back down for a 17.5 mile outing with 3,800' of gain. A nice fall day out.

Jeff asked me if I'd be interested in a Sawatch 14er trip and I suggested Mount Elbert since neither of us had been up it in winter before and the Colorado snowpack had been pretty tender. We took the safe and direct east ridge route.

Orcas Island 50k and Seattle, 2010-02-06

Our friend and fellow Hardrocker James Varner visited Los Alamos in November to run some of the trails in the Jemez. During his stay he mentioned a run he directs called the Orcas Island 50k. I had not ever heard of the island but knew it was "near" my sister's house in Silverdale, WA. Allison and I had free flight vouchers for Delta so it made it happen combining a family visit with a new ultra run for me.

Colorado 14ers Memories, 1996-2001

In 1996 I climbed my first 14er with two of my Dad's friends. They had tried to convince him to go but he wasn't interested. I was, however, and thus began a six year project to ascend all of Colorado's 14ers. I founded some great friendships and saw some of Colorado's greatest areas along the way. I got into the habit of taking a self portrait on the summit of the 14ers. For the first few years, I was shooting photos with my Dad's 35mm Pentax K1000 camera. Eventually I got a digital camera. CO Trail Friends Yurt, 2010-01-08

At the San Juan Solstice 50 mile race post-race ceremony I won a raffle prize of two free nights at one of the Hindsdale Haute Route yurts near Lake City, CO. Allison, Bill, Tom, Steve, Danny and I took advantage of this prize and headed up to the Colorado Trail Friends Yurt for the weekend. The snowpack wasn't great but the weather and company more than made up for it.

For our last climb of our six day climbing trip at Red Rock Canyon NCA we headed back into Oak Creek Canyon for a third time for the alpine-like route, Black Orpheus, 5.10a.

Red Rock Canyon, "Crimson Chrysalis", 5.8, 2009-12-30

After climbing in the shade earlier in the week and finding it tolerable, we figured we'd see how rough it was to climbing a north-facing route on a cold, cloudy day. It worked out alright but wasn't great--we'll see the sun tomorrow. But climbing the mega-classic Crimson Chrysalis route with only one other party on it reinforced our decision to climb it in cooler-than-is-tolerable-for-some conditions.

Red Rock Canyon, Eagle Wall, "Eagle Dance", 5.10c A0

Eagle Dance is another Red Rocks classic on the remote Eagle Wall that I had been hoping to climb for quite some time. Daniel was up for the big approach to Eagle Wall again so we made it so. The route turned out to be as fantastic as is heralded but if I were to do it again, I'd stop at the top of pitch 6 and skip the aid pitch and the other poorer-quality rock pitches above.
