One could not begin to imagine how the entire family fell ill with typhoid, dysentery and malaria in such a horrible place.

The prison was used by others over the years. Under the stairwell, which was visible in the previous photos, is this lower area of the prison, in which this area called the Gallows, is where prisoners were hung.
