Thirty-nine teams, nearly 150 students, participated in this year's competition. The competition has grown roughly 40 percent since it started in 2008. Teams of up to four worked together to design, build, and program a LEGO Mindstorms robot. This year's objective was "A Mission to Mars." Students were asked to develop a LEGO robot to navigate a Martian mining site to clean up debris, harvest ore, and deactivate an emergency beacon. Three divisions were in the competition-Middle School RCX, Middle School NXT, and High School. RCX is an older model of LEGO Mindstorms and NXT is the newer model. Awards were given to the top three
