Rear flue sheet showing damage to the tube ends by running low water and too much heat. Solder is melted out in many of the tubes as seen in the middle of the bottom row.

The old tubes that were removed. You can see what happens when a locomotive is run low on water. 9 out of 13 are warped.
Just some of the scale that was cleaned out of the boiler shell and mud ring. The large chunk in the upper left is the size of a half dollar. Even if you do use a boiler treatment, blowing down and drying out your boiler is a must. Also I recommend yearly boiler washes with all plugs removed along with the steam dome if possible. In my opinion, there is NO excuse for this. I must have pulled out 2-3 pounds of this. Most of it collected in the side sheets and mud ring.
Brakes and linkage added during overhaul in January 2008 by Badger Locomotive Works
Smokebox is now mounted to the cylinder saddle and block ready to install on the frame after inspection, painting and re-conditioning.
Here the chassis is going back together.
View showing the Superscale 2.5: scale aluminum brake shoes and my home built rigging. Mounted under the front of the locomotive is a 1/2" x 1.5" air cylinder that I get from McMaster Carr. I have used these on steam with excellent results. The time I would spend on building a cylinder with the same components would have cost more in labor. This one has a return spring. 1/8" piping runs alongside the frame to the cab where a whistle valve mounted on the turret actuates the system. Very simple and easy to install. Having brakes saves on the wear and tear of your valve gear when using the reverser.

Nearing completion...
Finished and ready to fire.
To be different, cause thats the way I am, I moved the sand dome up front and the bell in the middle. I always liked the way the Ernest Marsh looks at Disneyland and this was my inspiration. So for you purists, just deal with it.
Warming up for the first time since rebuild.
Breathing on its own. The cold morning air in the shop shows with the steam vaporizing.

150psi 12Volt water pump used for filling the Chloe tank or the boiler from a 9 gallon aux. behind the battery. A complete re-wiring job was done to include a 20 amp inline fuse for protection. Also the pump now has a momentary on switch so as not to over compensate the amount of water being injected.
3 way valve controls water flow. To the left fills the Chloe tank, right fills the boiler.
