JULY 20,2011 STUDENTS FROM RALEIGH,NC AREA TOURS PINE BRANCH COAL
The Perry County Appalachian Service Project has a total of 45 adults and teenagers visiting this week to help citizens in need of home repairs. The group is primarily from Raleigh, North Carolina and represent several churches in that area. The adults in the group have many differnt professional backgrounds such as attorneys, armed forces, electricians, business owners, pastors, teachers and many more. The group was taken on a tour of the Pine Branch Coal Mine site. Haven King, president of Coal Mining Our Future and Chuck Davidson, manager of engineering for Pine Branch, conducted the tour. On the tour, the group was shown the equipment used in mining coal, the bee farm and cattle being raised on the reclaimed site, and they visited an active coal pit where they were taught the process of mining coal. Larry Clay, the manager of the cattle ranch also spoke to the group about the importance of mountain top development
