SAVED Exhibition at the Art Academy of Cincinnati 1212 Jackson St Cincinnati, OH 45202
October 15 through November 12, 2010
Kate Kern My work increasingly pushes the boundaries between drawing, artists’ book and installation. The work is driven by ideas rather than by desire to master a technique or medium.
1000 Eyes is about what it means to be all-seeing. Surrounding the viewer with a mass (8 x 22’) of pairs of human eyes, students and teachers from the PLCH high school yearbook collection, Inspiration for this comes from Buddhist and Catholic manifestations of universal compassion as well as my own experience as a student and artist in residence in the school environment. Materials: photocopy toner transferred to strips of perforated card catalog cards. The hole in the top card of each strip is placed over a peg on a metal strip secured to the wall. Each strip hangs from its own single peg - creating possibilities for small continuous movement.
Kristin explores the contents of Guest Guide Book.
Guest Guide Book, a 60 drawer card catalog started in 2001- gradually being filled and cross- referenced with my own categories such as: KK names, Sketchbook subject index, Know Facts, as well as text and image contents of my artists’ books. . This work takes something that was once a common fixture in any library and gives it an alternative life as a non-digital highly subjective collection of data.
Some of the drawers are labed with text others with images.
Inside - alternating eye images
Animal eyes from my photos taken at the Cincinnati Zoo and printed on translucent paper. Human eyes from "unidentified" file of historical images
overlay - human and animal eyes
In each of the 4 weeks of the exhibition participants were invited to select cards from Guest Guide Book and arrange them on the shelves next to the cabinet.
