2012 08 07 Orange Arts District Tour

Tuesday, August 7th 6:00 - 7:00pm Hat City Kitchen 459 Valley Street, Orange, NJ 07050 The narrated one hour walk introduces newcomers and current residents to former industrial and commercial buildings rehabilitated by HANDS now occupied by local artists, innovators, entrepreneurs and arts-based nonprofits. Stops include a community earth oven, hydroponic greenhouse, youth arts studio, the No Name Hat Factory formerly owned by the Stetson brothers, a preview of two new artist loft buildings and much more.

2012 05 01 Grounds for Sculpture Docent Trip

A drizzly morning, followed by sunshine. Interesting highlight tour, followed by a box lunch in the Peacock Cafe, with time to explore on our own after lunch. Would have done more, but after a 5-day Museum trip and returning late Monday evening, both my camera battery and my personal battery ran out of power!

Newark Museum Day trip, including the Cherry Blossoms in Branch Brook Park. After a long, cold Spring, this was a beautiful Summer Day, but the blossoms were just beginning to open. The 2500 trees will be in glorious full bloom in a day or two.

What's missing is the interesting tour of the Tenement Museum (no photos allowed) and the 3-hour caloric cholesterol dinner from chopped liver to egg creams at Sammy's Roumanian Restaurant. Oh, yes... and side trips to Joe's Fabric Shop, an Art Gallery and Russ's Daughters Appetizing Shop. Unfortunately, Gus's Pickles moved to Brooklyn!

NMVO Newark Gallery Crawl Oct 2009

The Newark Museum Volunteers Organization members visited the Jewish Museum exhibit "Hard Times: The Art of Michael Lenson," as part of the Newark Gallery Crawl. Eric Freedman, President of Ahavas Sholom, gave a brief history of the Jewish Museum, located in the oldest continually active synagogue in Newark. The exhibition is a retrospective of famed WPA muralist and Newark artist, Michael Lenson.

African American Tour of Philadelphia

A Newark Museum Day trip to Philadelphia, visiting sites emphasizing the African American presence there. Stops included the Liberty Bell at the Independence National Park, Tour of Mother Bethel AME Church, Lunch at The Chart House, a drive-by of various sites, a Tour and Music and Dance demonstration at the African American Museum, followed by a soul food dinner at Patterson's Palace in the northside.

Hello, Dali!

MOMA, Music, Movies and Dali Madness! Special Exhibitions of Dali and Kirchner don't allow photography, so the entrances are the best I could do. The band "Kamikaze Ground Crew" performed Daliesque pieces (including one by Erik Satie). The sax player is Doug Wieselman. I also saw "I vitelloni" a 1953 film directed by Frederico Fellini. I also saw the photography exhibit by Bernd & Hilla Becher: Landscape/Topology. They took black & white photos of industrial sites such as water tanks in a series and also showed the equipment in its landscape. I've got to come up with an "off the wall" series and maybe I'll get rich & famous too! Couldn't resist Dali's fascination with ants...hence the postcard and the coffee mug souvenirs.

Strange Fruit - Australian Group Aug 20 2008

Australia's Strange Fruit is a Melbourne-based performing arts company that performs work that incorporates theater, dance and circus, all done on 15-foot tall swaying poles. "Swoon" is a 20-minute spectacle about love, loss and laughter, accompanied by a soundtrack of original music and classics, including Opera.

Newark Museum Tripping at Woodstock

The Newark Museum Travel Department arranged for a great day at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the original site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Duke Devlin, Site Interpreter, the "Texas panhandle hippie who came in '69 and never left" shared his recollections of that gathering of 500,000 in farmer Max Yasgur's alfalfa field.
