Twenty Lakes Basin

A last minute backpacking trip to 20 Lakes Basin. This trip was a typical "Pete Campbell has the worst luck" trip. My new Canon point-and-shoot broke on the first picture (cracked screen). My 15lb 20D died after only a few photos since it was so cold. My hands were so cold I decided to skip cooking and ate Cliff shots the whole trip. Winds hit 50+ mph and it snowed/hailed all night. An amazing sound against the tent, but impossible to sleep. Riley was freezing and shared my sleeping bag for the night. It was so cold the next day and the snow was supposed to really come down that night so we bailed. That said, Shamrock Lake was beautiful and all-in-all it was a great trip. Pretty place, easy hike, few people. What more could you ask for? Sorry for the poorly composed, out-of-focus pics, but now you at least know why. As a side note, Riley will be sleeping in comfort on the next trip. The good people at Feathered Friends are making him a custom down bag for winter camping. :)

Caribou Wilderness 2009

Hiking with dad and Riley in the Caribou Wilderness of Northern California. First day we did a short 7 mile loop and on the second day we hiked a 12 mile out and back. I'm pretty sure Riley hiked 20 miles on day 2 with all the running and swimming...

Ryan, Mike, and Jamie met up with Greg and I for a couple days of Spring skiing in Tahoe for my 40th bday. A great day at Squaw was followed by two feet of new snow and a great day at Sugar Bowl.

Sugar Bowl to Squaw Valley Ski Tour

Another epic tour with G. This time from Sugar Bowl over to Squaw Valley. Started up Mt Judah, over to Mt Lincoln, toured the ridge over to Mt Anderson for camp. Day 2 took us up Anderson, over to Tinkers Knob, down to Mountain Meadow Lake, and up and over into Squaw. Conditions were perfect for touring the ridge - low wind, warm weather. This led to pretty miserable conditions on the Squaw side as we picked our way through deep slush and across numerous snow melt streams. Once back at Squaw we realized we missed the bus to get back to the car so I hitchhiked. Catching a ride was pretty easy, but once at the truck it wouldn't start up. After 30 minutes of trying I finally got it going and limped back to Squaw to get G. Turns out the fuel pump decided to go bad... doh! Off to meet the other guys in Tahoe for a weekend of skiing...

Mt Lassen Backcountry

Two day tour of Lassen National Park with Greg. Made it to Lake Helen by 2:30pm, setup camp, dug a kitchen, and headed out for some turns. Back at camp for sunset and got to work cooking dinner. Greg brought Backcountry Pantry Chicken Curry that was five months past the "best by" date. Took one bite after I convinced him that freeze dried food never goes bad and figured out something was seriously wrong with the food. He dumped the rest, but it was too late. Two hours later he had violent food poisoning - shakes, sweating, and all the other standard food poisoning body responses. After a night of no sleep and thoughts of how to drag Greg back tot he car, the sun came up and G was back. He wanted to summit Lassen. So off we went for the summit attempt. The conditions were terrible. Thick crust, ice, heavy winds... About half way up we decided conditions were too unsafe and turned back. Packed up camp and headed home. An excellent trip and certainly a memorable one...

	"I enjoyed this album terrifically. It describes a trip I took many times, but you take much better pictures than I did. The thing that amazes me, though, is that you had a hard time coming down Horse Canyon. You must have taken some kind of wrong turn very near the top. There is almost always a use trail on the way down. You have to stay near the bottom of the canyon though. I don't know if you can reply to this comment, but I'd like to talk to you if you will be hiking that canyon again. Bill" Pawpaw
