Ship in a bottle
Bristol has a history of glass making dating back to the 17th century when ships exported bottles out of the city 's harbour. Referencing both this and the city's nautical past, 'Ship in a bottle' was developed for BV Open Studios in November 2010. Using a technique based on the 1860's stage show illusion 'Pepper's ghost', the work consists of an empty bottle inside a dimly lit viewing box. When the viewer looks inside the box they perceive a 3-dimentional, ghostly, image of a boat drifting endlessly on a stormy sea. The experience is backed up by a gentle wind that blows from within the box, caressing the viewer's face. www.stuartmitchell.net
