Scafells, Lords Rake and West Wall Traverse

An epic walk! I decided to head for Scafell via Lords Rake and West Wall Traverse from Seathwaite, returning via Foxes Tarn, Mickledore and Scafell Pike. Having took the wrong gully from West Wall Traverse i found my path blocked by a chockstone, and had a near vertical scramble to safety......the most out of my depth i've ever felt on a mountain!!!

High Street, Kidsty Pike and High Raise

Well......i had it all on Saturday! Dry with high cloud, low cloud and horizontal hail stone, heavy rain and heavy snow!! I ascended High Street from Mardale Head via Rough Crag and Long Stile, one of my favourite routes! I then headed for Kidsty Pike and High Raise before descending down to Haweswater via Low Raise. An eventful day weatherwise, but with great views from all summits visited!

Bowfell and Crinkle Crags

Parking near the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel i ascended Bowfell via the Band. I took the Climbers Traverse and ascended by way of Wainwrights "River of Boulders" up the side of the Great Slab....by far the best route to the summit of Bowfell! I then descended to Three Tarns and followed different paths across the summit ridge of Crinkle Crags before descending by way of Browney Gill (note the different spellings of Gill and Ghyll in such close proximity).

Helvellyn via Stridng Edge to Raise

Leaving Glenridding i headed up the Mires Beck Path to Birkhouse Moor. I then ascended Helvellyn via Striding Edge before making my way to Raise via White Side, them back to Glenridding via Green Side. Another route to put in my list of MANY favourites!!

High Street and Thornthwaite Crag from Hartsop

Whilst i'’ve been up High Street a few times before, i'd never done it from Hartsop. So, knowing that i'd be a bit worse for ware following a night out in Bowness with a friend, i decided that the gradual ascent was just what i needed! The day started out lovely! I thought i'd packed far too many clothes until the temperature plummeted on High Street and the low clouds and rains came on Thornthwaite Crag. I thought for a moment i was going to have one of my first fully dry day on the fells for ages.....it wasn't to be.

Birkhouse Moor, Catstycam, Helvellyn and White Side

Parking near Stybarrow Crag i headed through Glenridding and along Mires Beck to Birkhouse Moor. Due to the wind, i decided to give Striding Edge a miss and instead opted for Helvellyn via Swirral Edge, bagging Catstycam en-route. I next headed for White Side before returning to Glenridding by way of Glenridding Beck. A great route in difficult, windy and wet conditions....though you wouldn't have thought so judging by the first photo!

Catbells to High Spy and Castle Crag

The purpose of this walk was to accompany a friend whilst he completed his Wainwright round on Castle Crag, In order to make a walk of it, we parked at Hawes Point and headed for Catbells, Maiden Moor and High Spy before descending by Tongue Gill and onto Castle Crag. The weather wasn't too promising as we headed north. It rained all the way up the M6 and across the A66. It didn't stop until we parked the car at Hawes End....then....the best weather i've had for weeks! Despite the gale force winds that made progress slow and hard work, the cloud was high and there were great views all day! Unbelievably, we had every summit to ourselves! Even Catbells and Castle Crag.....i don't think the day could have been much better :o)

Thornthwaite Crag and the Ill Bell Ridge

Parking at Church Bridge Troutbeck, i walked up Troutbeck Park and ascended Thornthwaite Crag via Scot Rake. I then returned to Troutbeck via Froswick, Ill Bell and Yoke. The snow was really deep on the tops and progress was slow and hard work in zero visibility! Great fun though :o)

Langdale Pikes and High Raise

Parking at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel i headed for Pavey Ark via Stickle Tarn and Wainwrights North Rake. I continued to Harrison Stickle which saw my previous visit to the area cut short due to poor weather. Whilst the cloud cover was low and visibility was poor at times it stayed dry so i continued on to Loft Crag, Pike O Stickle, Thunacar Knott, High Raise and Sergeant Man. An excellent and bitterly cold day on the fells!

Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike and Dollywagon Pike

A really bleak day on the fells today! Parking on the Dunmail Raise i headed down to Swirls before ascending Helvellyn. Visibility was pretty much zero and the rain was a continuous mist. I continued onto Nethermost Pike, Dollywagon Pike and descended via Grisedale Tarn. We must get some better, clearer, weather soon........mustn't we?????

I met up with fellow Tweeters Karen and Davie for a walk up Lords Rake to Scafell. This walk had been planned for a while and we were hoping to find Lords Rake under snow....no such luck i'm afraid. However, we tagged Lingmell and Scafell Pike onto the walk and it turned out to be a great day on the Fells!!

Harter Fell, Branstree and Selside Pike

The weather forecast for the 30th December said that the weahter would be worse in the West.....so i made a trip to the Far Eastern Fell with a friend who needed Selside Pike for his 214 (only two to go for him now :o) ) We left Mardale Head and headed for Harter Fell, Branstree and Selside Pike. Upom reaching Mardale Head i found that i had forgotten my camera >:-( so photos come courtesy of my walking partner for the day.....it also means that you need to endure a couple of photos of me ;o)

Pavey Ark and Harrison Stickle

Parking at Stickle Barn i ascended to Stickle Tarn along Stickle Ghyll. There was plenty of water coming down and the noise was incredible all the way to the tarn. From Stickle Tarn i ascended Pavey Ark by way of Wainwrights North Rake. A great route but made difficult by the wet rock and a 20 - 30 metre section of wet, soft snow. Next stop it was Harrison Stickle. The weather was trully awful so i opted to descend by way of Dungeon Ghyll, a place i have never visited before. All in all, a wet miserable day! But i still enjoyed it :o)

Blea Rigg from Grasmere

An eventful day! I couldn't wait to get out in the snow and was planning to head for Sergeant Man. However.....the snow was very soft and deep in places. It was fresh and there were no tracks or footprints on Blea Rigg at all! In places you had to wade thigh deep and sank down to your waist on a number of occasions. One of those occasions, i sank through a snow covered tarn and had to wade my way back to the side.....not really knowing which way the nearest way out was! The result.....a very cold and wet walk back to the car! I decided to give Sergeant Man a miss on this occasion

Parking at Nether Wasdale i decided to tackle the Scree Path for the second time whilst visiting Illgill Head and Whin Rigg. Believe it or not, i really enjoy the Scree Path......there can't be many lake shore paths in the lakes that carry a warning :o)

Clough Head, the Dodds and High Rigg

Perfect conditions for walking! Clear blue skies, cold and fresh, and not a breath of wind :o) Setting off from St Johns in the Vale Church i headed for Clough Head, Great Dodd and Watson Dodd. The main objective of the day was to bag some a friends outstainding Wainwrights, so having already bagged Stybarrow Dodd we decided to give it a miss and decended straight off Watson Dodd before heading up High Rigg. The route off Watson Dodd was VERY steep and not to be recommended!!

The Scafells via Lords Rake and West Wall Traverse

I met with Andy Lang for a walk up Lords Rake and West Wall Traverse. I had wanted to try Lords Rake for some time and Andy said he knew just the route! We headed up Pen via Great Moss from Brotherilkield then onto Scafell Pike. A great route away from the crowds! We then dropped down to Mickledore before heading for Scafell via Lords Rake and West Wall Traverse....an absolute classic!!!! From Scafell we went over Slight Side on the return to the car. Thanks Andy.....it was a great day! Can't wait to do it again!!!

High Stile Range plus Starling Dodd and Great Borne from Buttermere

Parking near Buttermere Church i walk along Buttermere Lakeshore to Scarth Gap Pass. I then continued up Gamlin End to High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike. From Red Pike i continued to Great Borne via Starling Dodd before returning to Buttermere. I great walk in pretty good weather, just caught in a short shower on High Crag.

Arthurs Pike to Steel Knotts

I met up with Andy, Martin and Clare for a walk from Pooley Bridge over Arthurs Pike, Bonscale Pike, Loadpot Hill Wether Hill and Steel Knotts. Andy left his car at Martindale Church and so gave us all a lift back to Pooley Bridge. Despite being wet at times, the clouds stayed high enough for us to see where we were going and get some reasonable views!

7 Skiddaw Fells

Parking at the top of Gale Road i headed for Millbeck for and ascent of Dodd and Carl Side. This route was all about supporting a friend on his quest for his 214 so we headed off to Ullock Pike and back via Long Side. Due to the torrential rain, and the fact that we'd both summited Skiddaw a few times, we decided to make the unfrequented trip across the screes on the south face of Skiddaw. An interesting and slippery route with superb view! we then headed for Skiddaw Little Man, Lonscale Fell and Latrigg. A battle with the weather more than anything!

Having successfully managed a walk around the High Street fells yeaterday, i could resist a short walk up Hallin Fell from Martindale. The weather was pretty grim. Persistent drizzle and low cloud. But it meant i got Hallin Fells summit to myself for at least 10 minutes!

A High Street Wander

I couldn't sit around any longer and decided to head for the hills! I decided to head up High Street via Rough Crag. A favourite route that isn't too steep. Having successfully reached the summit of High Street i headed to Thornthwaite Crag, then onto Gray Crag and back to Thornthwaite, before heading for Mardale Ill Bell. I retured to Mardale Head via Small Water. It was a great day! Really windy on High Street and Thornthwaite Crag but easing as the day went on. No real problem with my shins....just slight pain in the left one, but nothing to worry about!

Arthurs Pike, Ullswater

With the weather still looking great, and the fact that my shin seemed a LOT better, i decided to ignor Doctors advice (don't do it kids ;-) ) and try a short walk up an easy gradient to Arthurs Pike from Park Foot, Pooley Bridge. Despite the clear blue skies, the wind was strong and VERY cold! My leg was fine! I was really tempted whilst on Arthurs Pike to continue to Bonscale Pikes and Loadpot Hill, but didn't take the chance in the end. My first step (as it were) back into fellwalking went well! May try something a little bit longer next weekend (depending upon the results of my x-ray of course!

Leaving Patterdale i headed for Birkhouse Moor, Helvellyn (via Striding Edge), White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Hart Side, Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd. A hard day on the fells in changable conditions.....but at least it stayed dry! I really enjoyed Striding Edge! The first of what i think will be many visits in 2011!!!!

Castle Crag from Rosthwaite

Well......at times i didn't think that this day would come! Parking at Rosthwaite (we arrived late so we couldn't get parked up at Grange) i headed for Castle Crag with Cath and Mia.....the last of my 214!!!! A superb day...all i could have hoped for! It stayed dry, and Castle Crag was great and full of interest!! I carried a bottle of Wainwright Ale to the top and couldn't resist raising a glass to AW! Alan

My plan was to bag my remaining Western Fells of Middle Fell, Seatallan and Buckbarrow. Whilst on the summit of Middle Fell in cold clear conditions, with very little wind, i decided to head for Haycock as well! The diversion made this a great 10 mile walk with superb views throughout!

Scafell and Slight Side

My second attempt in as many weekends of Scafell. All i can say is WOW.....what a day! The snow line was much lower than last week. The gully leading to the top Mickledore was hard frozen snow, so crampons and an axe was essential. Once at the top of Mickledore, i descended to the foot of the gully leading to Foxes Tarn. The snow in the gully was waist deep, really soft and made the going really hard work. It was a long old slog to the top of Scafell in virtually no visibility. I continued to Slight Side before returning to Wasdale Head. The best day i've ever had on the fells! I have a new favorite mountain!!

Lingmell

An eventful day! With great views and still, crisp weather forcast i made the marathon journey to Wasdale Head with a view to heading up Lingmell before heading on to Scafell and Slight Side......what followed was a lesson in not being prepared for the nountains! Encouraged by the fact that there was very little visible snow (patches at most) and the fact my walk less than a week ago posed no problems, i decided to shed some weight from my rucksack and left my Ice Axe and Crampons in the car. The ascent of Lingmell was no problem. A steep walk over hard frosty grass. Conditions changed underfoot at Lingmell Col where an icy film covered the rocks. I got within 300 ft of the top of Mickledore where i took the decision to turn back. snow covered the path and beneath the snow was sheet ice! The mountain won this time......but i'm already planning my return!!!!

Missed the snow again for my last walk of 2010. I started in Patterdale and headed for St Sunday Crag then returning over Birks and Arnison Crag. Not many views i'm afraid as i spent most of the day in cloud. It was surprisingly mild and stated dry which was a bonus!

Starting in Grasmere i headed for Stone Arthur, then onto Great Rigg and Faifield. I descended to Grisedale Hause by the steep scree path and returned to Grasmere down Tongue Gill. A lovely day with great views from Stone Arthur and Great Rigg, and quite a bit of snow on Fairfield!!

Hartsop Above How to High Hartsop Dodd

A superb little Horseshoe walk from Cow Bridge Car Park took me over Hartsop Above How, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, Little Hart Crag and High Hartsop Dodd. Paths were clear and easy to follow, although the descent of High Hartsop Dodd was pretty steep (but not difficult). I would highly recomend it!!!

Allen Crags, Glaramara and Rosthwaite Fell (Bessyboot)

I returned to Seathwaite this weekend. I again headed up Grains to Esk Hause then onto Allen Crags, Glaramara and Rosthwaite Fell. The route from Allen Crags to Glaramara was a joy. A good path over rocky ground with a real sense of being amongst the mountains.....brilliant!!

Hard Knott, Harter Fell and Green Crag

Parking at the top of the Hardknott Pass i first headed for Hard Knott then onto Harter Fell and Green Crag. I followed Stuart Marshalls route and so returned via Dunnerdale Forrest. Conditions were wet underfoot and hard going! Particularly on the approach ro Green Crag!

Carrock Fell to Great Calva

Setting off from Mosedale i started with a superb ascent to the intersting summit of Carrock Fell before heading for the equally interesting High Pike. I then headed down to Lingy Hut before ascending Knott then onto Great Calva and a steep descent back to the Cumbrian Way and Mosedale. A lovely route on good paths....but a bit wet underfoot in places.......Northern Fells.....DONE!

Parking at Rosthwiate i headed up Stonethwaite before the challenging climb (and test in route finding) up Eagle Crag. I then headed on a "Stonethwaite Horseshoe" taking in Segeants Crag, Ullscarf, Great Crag and Grange Fell before descending back to Rosthwaite. The weather was trully awful!!!!!

I then descended down to Coledale Hause before heading up Hopegill Head onto Whiteside and returning to the shores of Crummock Water via Whin Ben. The weather was perfect and i would strongly recommend the ridge from Hopegill Head to Whiteside!!!

Hen Comb to Burnbank Fell - Loweswater

A VERY remote walk today.....i started from Maggie's Bridge Car Park ascending Hen Comb, Gavel Fell, Blake Fell and Burnbank Fell. Didn't see a sole until i got to Blake Fell! The walk across Whiteoak Moss was a lonely one and i would imagine down right misserable in wet weather!!!

Bakestall and Skiddaw

Being back on the fells this weekend felt great! I walked from Peter House Farm up the Cumbria Way and ascended Skiddaw via Birket Edge and Bakesall before descending over Sale How towards Skiddaw House and back along the Cumbria Way......a 9.5 mile workout without and problems from my recent injury.......its good to be back!
