"Looking at the history of the PA Turnpike, it is in some sense a rail trail. Aside from the Allegheny tunnel, all of the mainline Turnpike tunnels were originally bored in the 1880s as part of the never-finished South Pennsylvania Railroad. Much of the existing grading was done during this time as well. It's actually a fascinating story involving the failures of some big names from the era -- Vanderbilt, Carnegie, and Frick, to name a few -- that ultimately turned into the then-revolutionary superhighway. Look up "Vanderbilt's folly" sometime."
