Ledson Winery and Vineyards: When the Ledson family started construction in 1989, they thought the property would be ideal for their residence. They planted 17 acres of Merlot and began work on the house. As the months passed, the turrets, slate roofs, balconies and fountains took shape and passers-by started to take notice, some going so far as to climb the fences to get a better look. The family eventually realized that it was time to rethink the plan. Given the intense public interest in the building and the quality of the Merlot harvested from the estate vineyard - which had been sold to nearby wineries - they decided to turn the home into a winery and tasting room. "As a small child, my first recollection was the aroma of wine emanating from the old building as soon as I entered," he says. He played among the barrels and ovals in the cellars, stories of the old family wine business ringing in his ears. It was then, Dario believes, that the dream of reopening the winery began. In 1972, after two years in Europe beyond college, Dario began his apprenticeship at various Napa Valley wineries. He still had his dream, the same dream he'd had as a child. Monterey Bay Aquarium, Moon Jelly, Aurelia Labiata

Natural History These alien-looking creatures are is named for its their translucent, moonlike circular bells. Instead of long, trailing tentacles, moon jellies have a short, fine fringe (cilia) that sweeps food toward the mucous layer on the edges of the bells. Prey is stored in pouches until the oral arms pick it up and begin to digest it. The coloration of a moon jelly often changes depending on its diet. If the jelly feeds extensively on crustaceans, it turns pink or lavender. An orange tint hints that a jelly’s been feeding on brine shrimp. Scientists have studied the life cycle of this jelly extensively. They know the adult male moon jelly releases strands of sperm, which are ingested by female moon jellies. After fertilization, larvae settle on or near the seafloor and grow into polyps. Polyps alternate between feeding and reproductive stages for up to 25 years. Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. After years of studying the complex relationship between wine quality and place, and understanding the importance of "terroir," Phelps has developed estate-owned vineyards in the premiere growing regions of Stag's Leap, Rutherford, Oakville, Oak Knoll and the eastern foothills of Napa. In Sonoma County, an ambitious project was undertaken in 1999 to purchase land and develop vineyards along the western frontier of the Sonoma Coast, and today Phelps has 80 acres of Pinot Noir and 20 acres of Chardonnay planted in Freestone. Natural History Not all jellies sting, but the sea nettle does. It hunts tiny drifting animals by trailing those long tentacles and frilly mouth-arms, all covered with stinging cells. When the tentacles touch prey, the stinging cells paralyze it and stick tight. From there, the prey is moved to the mouth-arms and finally to the mouth, where it's digested. Conservation There is mounting evidence that human influences in coastal habitats may be creating conditions more favorable to jellies, leading to an increased frequency of blooms and reduced populations of larval fishes. They may seem insignificant when washed up on a beach, but gelatinous animals are certainly worthy of our attention and study. The high abundance of sea nettles makes scientists believe they play a significant role in the planktonic food chain. Natural History Close kin to seahorses, leafy sea dragons don't live on tropical reefs, but in the cooler rocky reefs off South and Western Australia. There, these rare fish, with their leaflike fins and frilly appendages, are perfectly camouflaged among seaweeds and seagrass beds. They're nearly impossible to spot among the plants as they slowly sway back and forth with the current. Leafy sea dragons eat small shrimplike animals that live among the weeds. Sea dragons' tubelike mouths work like drinking straws: a hungry dragon waits until its prey ventures near, then slurps it up. Each day, a single sea dragon may slurp up thousands of its prey. Monterey Bay Aquarium, Longsnout Seahorse, Hippocampus Reidi

Natural History This slender seahorse grows to about seven inches long. Males are often bright orange and the females yellow; both may be covered in brown or white spots, and may turn pink or white during courtship. They are found in coral reefs and sea grass beds and occasionally in the midwater of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida, and from the Caribbean down to Brazil. Males can carry broods of up to 1,000 young in their pouches, with larger males carrying even more young. Conservation Of the thousands of longsnouts born in each brood, only one or two may live to become adults and raise broods of their own. In the past, that’s been enough to keep their populations healthy. But today, collectors take tons to dry and sell as souvenirs. Monterey Bay Aquarium, Dwarf Seahorse, Hippocampus Zosterae

Natural History This is one of the smallest seahorse species, at just under one inch long. They are commonly found in sea grass beds off the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Gulf of Mexico. Dwarf seahorse pairs take their time getting to know each other before they mate. As part of their mating ritual, a female will swim into the male’s territory, and the pair performs elaborate courtship dances each morning for several days until they eventually hook tails and swim up in the water column to mate. Conservation Like their brethren, dwarf seahorses face an uncertain future. Coastal population pressure and the accompanying dredging, pollution and development are destroying their natural homes. Cool Facts Dwarf seahorses live among beds of sea grass. With their long tails, they hitch themselves to blades of grass as they graze on tiny animals that drift by with the currents. Monterey Bay Aquarium, Potbelly Seahorse

Natural History When it comes to a male potbelly’s pouch, size matters. Bigger is better for attracting females, so courting males pump their pouches full of water. One of the larger seahorse species, “potbellies” are found in the waters of New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania in sea grass beds and rocky reefs, or attached to jetties and man-made objects along the coast. They come in mottled colors ranging from white to deep browns or yellows and olive greens. The adults average 10 to 12 inches long. Conservation As we continue to develop the coastlines, we sometimes destroy the potbellies’ natural habitats or tear down the ones we’ve built—leaving seahorses homeless. Natural History Measuring up to a foot tall, Pacific seahorses are among the giants of the seahorse world. The Pacific seahorse is the only seahorse species found along the California coast, ranging from San Diego Bay to Peru, and is usually found in shallow beds of soft corals and gorgonians. This species comes in a variety of colors, including gray, brown, red, and yellow, which often match its surroundings. Conservation In Asia and elsewhere, dried seahorses have been used as medicine for thousands of years. But as the number of people living on our planet increases, the demand for seahorses grows—and the number of seahorses shrinks. Each year, tons of Pacific seahorses are caught, dried and shipped to Asia. The history of Julien Wine Estate: In the late 1970's, Bob and Patty Brower set out to fulfill their dream. Originally from the East Coast, they had a passion for wine and admired the French hospitality encountered while traveling in Europe. They saw the potential in Monterey County as a quality wine growing region, and in 1982 began building what is now known as Château Julien Wine Estate in Carmel Valley, California. The winery's first release came in 1985 with Chardonnay and Merlot from the 1982 vintage. Today, the entire process of wine production takes place on the 16-acre estate, including the aging of nearly 2000 oak barrels of wine. Winemaker Bill Anderson joined the Browers in 1982, and produced the winery's first 100% Merlot with the premier vintage. Bill continues to produce wine at Château Julien Wine Estate, and has played an integral part in establishing Merlot as the winery's flagship varietal.

History of the Signorello Estate Winery Starting the Venture Ray Signorello Jr. began his journey as winemaker and vineyard owner in the Napa Valley during the mid 1980's. Ray, born in San Francisco, California, moved to Vancouver, Canada where the Signorello family continues to maintain a home. Ray divides his time between Napa, San Francisco, Vancouver and business related travel. Ray's father, Ray Sr., initiated the vineyard project during the mid 1970's by purchasing the 100-acre estate located on the Silverado Trail in the beautiful Napa Valley. Ray Sr. worked side by side with Ray Jr., establishing the winery's reputation for excellence until his passing in the fall of 1998. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument In 1865, George Hearst, a wealthy miner, purchased 40,000-acres of ranchland that included the Mexican Ranchos of Piedras Blancas, San Simeon and Santa Rosa. In 1919, his only son, William Randolph Hearst, inherited the land from his mother, Phoebe Apperson Hearst. By then the ranch had grown to encompass 250,000 acres. Originally known as "Camp Hill," its wilderness offered a place for family members and friends to "rough it" on camping trips. Natural History Graceful and nearly transparent, these jellies have long, delicate tentacles. When disturbed, they give off a green-blue glow because of more than 100 tiny, light-producing organs surrounding its outer bell. They can expand their mouths when feeding to swallow jellies half their size. They’re harvested for their luminescent aequorin, used in neurological and biological experiments to detect calcium. Conservation Jellies go with the flow, swimming just a bit, drifting where the currents take them. So all the trash thrown in the ocean is floating along with the jellies and other remarkable species, changing an environment we know little about. Cool Facts Crystal jellies are brightly luminescent jellies, with glowing points around the margin of the umbrella. Natural History The black sea nettle is considered a giant jelly; its distinctive purplish bell can reach over three feet (91 cm) in diameter; its lacy, pinkish oral-arms can reach nearly 20 feet (6 m) in length and its stinging tentacles 25 feet (7.6 m) or more. It probably lives in deeper, calmer waters but has appeared in large blooms in California coastal waters, most recently in 2010. Conservation Giant black sea nettles appeared in droves along the San Diego shoreline in the summer of 1989. Then they mysteriously disappeared. The giant drifters reappeared again ten years later, in the summer of 1999. Increased numbers of sea nettles may be an indication that human activities have changed the condition of the ocean. Increased organic material means more nutrients. Natural History This species is also known as a "lagoon jelly" because it lives in bays, harbors and lagoons in the South Pacific. Spotted jellies have rounded bells and strange clumps of oral arms with clublike appendages that hang down below. Instead of a single mouth, they have many small mouth openings on their oral-arms, which capture small animal plankton. In addition, each jelly grows a crop of algae, which gives them a greenish-brown color. They harvest some of their food directly from the algae. Conservation The number of spotted jellies in some lakes on Palau island (part of Micronesia in the Western Pacific) declined dramatically in 1998. After studying the lakes, scientists think the jellies disappeared because of changes in the lake water due to the very severe El Niño of 1997-98. Castle Nijo-jo was originally built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu. It was completed in 1626 by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, with the addition of some structures transferred from Fushimi Castle (built in the Momoyama period, 1573-1614). Nijo Castle is one of the finest examples of Momoyama architecture in Japan that makes splendid use of early Edo period building designs, and the lavish paintings and carving that Iemitsu ordered. After the transfer of the capital to Heian-Kyo in 794, Uji, blessed with nature and being close to the capital, began to develop as the nobility's villa city. Byodoin Temple was the heart of the city. It was originally a villa of Minamoto-No-Tohru, a man presumed to be the model for the hero “Hikaru Genji” of the Tale of Genji. Later the chief adviser to the Emperor Michinaga Fujiwara took possession of the villa, and his son Yorimichi converted it into a temple in 1052, naming it Byodoin. Designed by August de Montferrand, dozens of stones and marble were incorporated into the edifice. The Cathedral is decorated with 14 kinds of minerals and semi-precious stones as well as mosaic paintings, frescoes and bas-reliefs. St. Isaac’s is also home to the only stained-glass window in the Russian Orthodoxy. Another feature of the Cathedral is a foucaults pendulum that demonstrates the revolution of the earth around its own axis. Also, not to be missed is the view from the dome.

Russia, St Petersburg, Peter and Paul Cathedral

The historical core of St. Petersburg is the Peter and Paul Fortress, a monument of military and engineering excellence. Located on Zayachy Island, the Fortress forms an irregular hexagon that stretches east to west with six bastions at the corners. The walls of the Fortress that face the Neva River were lined with granite blocks with fortifications built on the southern bank of the Petrogradsky Island for added protection. Inside are the former Royal Mint and the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The present Peter and Paul Cathedral are made of stone and replaced the old wooden church of St. Peter and St. Paul. This cathedral was St. Petersburg’s first monumental building and is also the burial vault of many Russian emperors.

Russia, Pushkin, Catherine's Palace

Tsarskoye Selo, once known as the Czar’s Village or Pushkin, is approximately 17 miles south of the city of St. Petersburg and is the site of Catherine’s Palace. Built between 1719-1723 and restored many times, it has a stunning aqua colored façade, decorated with statues, gold and white ornaments and topped with gold onion domes. Inside is an immense collection of art work and furnishings. This, as with all of the palaces in the area, was heavily damaged by retreating German forces, but is now almost completely restored.

Russia, St Petersburg, Peterhof

Peterhof is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, about 22 miles southwest of St. Petersburg. Also known as Petrodvorets, it was founded in 1710 as a summer residence for Peter the Great. Altered and extended over the years, it was almost completely rebuilt between 1747 and 1754. Inside the Grand Palace are many splendid displays of art, decorative objects and furniture. The Palace over-looks a vista of spreading gardens and fountains.

Russia, St Petersburg, Palace Square

Rich in history, St. Petersburg is also known as the main focus of the revolution that took place at the beginning of the 20th century. The Palace Square is best known as being the center of many of the early political struggles. It was here that “Bloody Sunday” took place, starting the revolution of 1905. History is that on Sunday, January 9, 1905 the revolution began with striking workers and their families marching for relief from Nicholas II. The marchers were met by soldiers who fired into the crowd, killing hundreds of demonstrators. Etienne Falconet, a Frenchman, sculpted the Bronze Horseman, long considered one of the city’s most symbolic monuments. Catherine the Great commissioned the statue to pay tribute to the philosophy of enlightened absolutism she shared with Peter the Great. Helsinki is the capital city of Finland, situated on a peninsula on the southern coast, overlooking the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea. Gamla Stan, situated on the island of Stadsholmen, is Stockholm’s old medieval town that emerged in the 13th century. Gamla Stan is home to the present Royal Palace, where apartments and an armory offer an excellent insight into the past. A ceremonial changing of the guard takes place at noon on weekdays.
