"Bill is using randonnée skis. They have a binding that allows the heel to be either clipped down (when skiing downhill) or free (when going uphill). I was using standard backcountry skis. Using one of the other is a tradeoff between weight and control. Randonnée skis are heavy, so Bill had a harder time than me when going up. However, Randonnée skis give you more control when going downhill, so he had more fun when going down."

"Those look like regular downhill skis. Seems hard to go cross country in those. Did you have cross-country skis?"

"The original photo had a strong blue tint (a failure of white balancing). I tried many things but it was so saturated in the blue channel that the only thing that worked was to saturated all other channels as well. The result is very saturated (and still blue), but at least the yellow jacket help to focus on Peter and the moment."

"The wind was not bad. It was cold with a light breeze that diminished as the day progressed. I believe it was below freezing all day (which is what's keeping the snow so good)."
