#26 - B.C.C. 4.0" Improved Staunton - Ca. 1900
A 4.0" set of ebony and boxwood chessmen by the British Chess Company; heavily weighted, felted. Set has double-collared pawns which places it later in the run of "Improved Staunton" chessmen produced by that firm. Set has four queens - two ebony and two boxwood - all four have matching baize. Comes in a mahogany storage box, divided and lined, which Guy Lyons informs me is not original to the set. This set must have come from a club because, as shown in the photos, there are four queens to this set, and the extra pair likely came from another set at the club. The extra queens match perfectly in style, color and felts. Also, this set was given a coat of lacquer at some point, which might have been a long-ago restoration, or a clubs efforts to make the set moe durable for club play. All BCC experts are begged to correct anything I have stated that is wrong.
