The last picture is one taken about 1954 in Prophetstown. Mother, Ruth Coates, wrote out the names. Steve, David, Nancy are all Coates, my brothers and sister. I don't know when mother sent this picture to me, but it would have been after Marie, Alice, Uncle Charlie and Lucille had passed away. I have yet to sit down and figure out how everyone fits in the family tree. (Submitted by Margaret Coates Hill) www.tampicohistoricalsociety.com

These five blood brothers and their sister came onn a boat to America from Jonkoping (missing diacritics), on Lake Vattern, Sweden, probaby in the late 1880's. They all settled in northern Illinois, the Prophetstown area. Their last name was origianlly Anderson. But so many names were duplicated in America (and letters lost!) that two brothers took the last name of ROSS, from an admired and helpful banker. Christine and August took the last name of JOHNSON. Swan kept the name of ANDERSON.

Ross Farm and Shady Town Cemetery. Green marker is the Cemetery, but it should be on the other side of the road running south (Springhill Rd.). The "purple" road is Miner Rd.. The Red marker shows where to turn on to Henry Rd., heading south. The house at the end of the lane on the left of this photo is where the Ross family farmed. (I will scan a better photo with "pinhead markers." www.tampicohistoricalsociety.com
