JOHNSON BernardPfc. Bernard Ben" Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Tampico, was inducted into the armed service in June, 1941, and was sent from Camp Grant, Rockford, to Camp Wolters, Texas. Because of the 28-year-old regulation he was released from service October 28, 1941. He was taken back into the service the early part of February, 1942, and was stationed first at Dayton, Ohio, being transferred from there to Camp Custer, Mich. He was returned to Dayton for a short time before being sent out of the country. He ha been overseas for five months, but his exact location is notknown. He was married to Maybelle Williams in November, 1941. They have a son, Bernard Vernon, Jr., born August 25, 1942. He volunteered for service on Dec. 7, 1942, and was inducted Jan. 30 at Chicago. He was sent to Camp Grant, assigned to the army air force and transferred to Miami Beach, FL. ROSENE EugenePrivate Eugene V. Rosene, son of Harry Rosene, was born at Tampico, August 15, 1919. He attended Tampico high school. He enlisted in the army July 29, 1941, and was sent to Camp Wheeler, Ga. He volunteered for duty in the Panama Canal zone and was sent to that regiion November 2, 1941. He attended the Tampico grade and high schools, graduating from high school. He was employed by the I.N.U. for sseveral years and was working in the gas department when inducted into the army June 23, 1942, leaving Sterling for Camp Grant July 6. JOHNSON Jerald H. - Jerald H. Johnson, Corps of Military Police Company S. C., Camp Claiborne, Alexandria, La., is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Tampico. He joined the army September 27, 1940, and went from Tampcio to Fort McClellan, Ala., where he was stationed until December, 1940, where he has been ever since. He was married February 5, 1942, to Hazel Jordan of Oakdale, Ia., and following his marriage, they came to Tampico for a short visit at the home of his parents. SISSON Joy Eugene Born in Rock Falls, Ill. April 3, 1922, and attended the Sterling schools. Before enlisting in the Navy (sic) September 8 at Rock Island, he was employed by Earp & McDonald. Also the Central Oil and Grease company station. He is the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike SISSON to join the United States forces. SISSON entered the army as a A. B. Seaman, but ws made first gunner because of his marksmanship; later he was made an instructor. Sawyer Kenneth - Pvt. Kenneth Sawyer is with the anti-aircraft division stationed at Savannah, Ga. He was first inducted into service May 9, 1941. Because he was 29 years of age he returned to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sawyer, who reside near Propheetstown, during November. On February 6, 1942, he was again called and went to Camp Stewart. After his induction he was a truck driver for Hector Wancket of Atkinson. He is now spending a 10-day furlough with his parents. LANCASTER Le Roy - LeRoy Lancaster enlisted in the air corps Jan. 5, 1942, and went first to Camp Grant, Rockford. From there he was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. for about four weeks after which he was transferred in Ft. Jackson, Miss., April 24 was sent to Columbia Air Base, S.C. LeRoy is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Lancaster of Tampico. He was born May 18, 1922 at Prophetstown. He moved with his family in Rockford when four years of age and attended Rockford schools. The family later moved to Tampico and LeRoy graduated from the Tampico grade school and attended high school for one year. RENNER R. L. Lieut. - graduated from artillery officers' training school at Ft Sill last week. It is possible that Mrs. Renner and little son will join him if he is assigned to a post within the borders of the United States. Lieutenant Renner graduated from the Tampico high school in the class of 1935. He farmed with his parents until he entered the army June 30, 1941. He was first sent to Fort Sheridan, then to Fort Bragg, N. C. then to Fort Dixon, N.J., then to Camp Claiborne, La., then to Camp Livingston, La., and then to officers' school at Fort Sill. Lineutenant Renner early developed a liking for army life and his time has been rapid. Of unusual interest is the fact, that without college training, he was able to master the intricacies of mathematics and the various instruments used in the artiller in the short space of four months - something which required a vast amount of hard work. Lieutenant Renner was married to Miss Julia Shick, October 20, 1941.
BANE Lloyd E. Loyd E. Bane, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Wilbur Bane of Deer Grove. He enlised in the ordinance Department, aviation, and was sent to Mac Dill Field, Tampa, Fla. Sept. 27, 1940. He recently passed the examination for firing cadet and on April 6 was given a furlough awaiting assignment to a school for cadets. He is now visiting his family. He attended the Yorktown grade school and the Tampico High School from whch he graduated in 1938. Prior to entering the service, he worked at home and also for the Service Rubber Company at Rock Island. He was inducted into the service February 18, 1942. On August 17 he graduated from the New England aircraft school at Boston, Mass., where he took a course in air mechanics. He was stationed at Fort Dix, N. APPLE Robert Robert Apple was born in Sterling January 4, 1917. Owing in the death of his father, the late Frank J. Apple, a veteran of the war with Spain, it became necessary for Mrs. Apple to place her sons in Mooseheart. Here Robert Apple received his education and graduated from the Mooseheart schools in 1934. He worked in Sterling as a barber until he enlistsed in the United States navy in 1937. He was on the U. S. S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor. T. H., and Lost his life when that ship was sunk in the treacherous Japanese attack the morning of December 7, 1941. He was the first Whiteside county boy to give his life for his country. SHERE Robert L. Cpl. Robert L. Shere is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse L. Shere, who reside southwest of Yorktown. He was born at Pittsville, WI, Feb. 1, 1921, received his schooling in Brown school, and Hooppole high school. He was inducted at Peoria, Jan. 11, 1943, and sent ot Scott Field, IL. A few days laater he was assigned to a tank destroyer battalion and transferred to Camp Hood, TX, where he was stationed until his recent transfer to Ft. SAWYER Roland - Pvt. Roladn Sawyer is now stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. He is 24 years of age and has been in the army since June 27, 1941. He was first stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif. Roland is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sawyer of near Prophetstown. He attended Hooppole and Annawan schools. He was employed as a truck driver for Howard Newton at Hooppole. He has been called into active duty as a lieutenant in the cavalry. COOK Ruth Lieut. Ruth Cook is a daughter of V. W. Cook of Tampico, Ill. She is a graduate of Tampico grade school, Tampico high school and St. Charles hospital, Aurora, Ill. She was a member of the T.H.S. class of 1936 and a graduate of the 1939 class of St. Chalres hopsital. She enlisted in the Army Nurses' Corps on March 25m 1941, and was called May 1, 1941, with the rank of lieutenant. She was sent to Fort Bragg, N. C. where she is still located. Was captured at 12:01 a.m. by German Patrol, Sept. 18, 1918 while carrying a message from hdqs. to another officer. This was in Alsace Sec., near city of Munster. Sept 24, he was taken to a farm near Colmar where he was taken sick. The Germans took him to Straussburg Hopsital prison where he died Oct. 12. 1819 of pneumonia. WELCH Aloysius A. A. A. Welch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Welch of Deer Grove. He was born in Hahnaman Twp. & granduated from the Tampico high school. Prior to that war he was representative in IL and WI for the Montreal Fur Co. Mrs. Welch is the former Ruth Frasier who with their one-year-old son, Michael, resides in Baraboo, WI. Pvt. Welch was inducted from Baraboo, WI July 30, 1943 & trained at Ft. Ord, CA as a member of the amphibious engineers.
