Gubernatorial Inauguration Parade Bands

It was inauguration day today for Governor-elect Rick Scott. An Inaugural Parade was scheduled for 2:30. When I went down to the park outside the library after I ate my lunch to smoke and read, the park was filled with bands, color guards, kilted pipers, and other marching fauna. I got my old Canon A470 out of my desk.

We stayed here while visiting my wife's Aunt Pat and Uncle Ray in Clearwater. Our room was very affordable, clean, and close to their house.

Behind the Iron Curtain, 1978

These are pictures I took in 1978 as I traveled with my family through East Germany to Berlin and then out of the DDR to Bavaria in West Germany. We stayed in West Berlin for perhaps two nights.

Sky

Living in Tallahassee is living in a forest. Having grown up in Central Florida, and lived out West, I can't get enough sky here. Some of these were taken from the second floor landing of the library on Park Avenue, and all with the little Vivitar Mini Digital Camera.

The Library at Night

For me, the library comes into its own at night, as I do myself. The Bhagavad Gita says that, "The sage awakes to light in the night of all creatures. That which the world calls day is the night of ignorance to the wise": Rimbaud's "scholar of the dark armchair", from which poem, "Childhood", this blog takes its name.

St. Augustine Branch

This album continues south of the album on Franklin Boulevard, as the drainage canal running down the middle of Franklin passes under Apalachee Parkway and surfaces as a meandering creek, flowing west past Cascades Park until it crosses under the Seaboard Coastline railway.

Franklin Flats: a vanished Bohemia

I've had it in mind for a long time to photograph these old apartment buildings on or near Franklin Boulevard and Park Avenue. Back in the '70's, an interesting mix of students, artists, potheads, journalists at WFSU and the Florida Flambeau, new-agers, holistic therapy enthusiasts, radicals and a lot of, um, feminists lived here on the east side of town, on the other side of downtown Tallahassee from FSU. My wife and I lived at 519 East Park Avenue when we were married in 1980. Rents were cheap, and A/C was rare, but they were well-built, and close to downtown and to FSU.

Citrus Packing Plant: Weirsdale, Florida

Weirsdale is a little hamlet on State Road 42 south of Ocala in Marion County, where it intersects State Road 25. I saw this structure on the way to my sister's house on Lake Yale near Eustis. I mentioned the citrus freezes of the late '80's in my Summerport Beach post, and I would guess they put this plant out of business. Growers have been replanting in recent years, and I was heartened to see new, healthy citrus groves here and there.

Summerport Beach

We had all, my father, sisters, spouses, watched my mother die in her hospital bed on Saturday. It had been a stormy, wet day, with winds whipping the lake into whitecaps. Sunday broke clear and fine. After lunch, everyone crashed. I found my camera and took a walk.
