The South Beach area is one of the highest crime areas in Durban, yet the hotels in this area were suggested by the IFLA local arrangements. We heard of over ten delegates who were assaulted and robbed, many at knife point

The building in the center with a dome is the City Hall.
The story is told that the architech that designed the city hall also designed the city hall in Toronto, Canada, but got the specifications mixed up and The Durban City Hall was built to Canadian standards for supporting heavy snow and the Canadian City hall was built to Durban's requirements. The Toronto City Hall roof collapsed with the first heavy snow.
