A fairly easy 7 mile hike on the scenic Sonoma coast. We started in the middle at Blind Beach and hiked north to the Russian River, then south to Shell Beach before returning to Blind Beach.

Kayaking at Jenner

An easy three hour paddle on the Russian River from Jenner to the mouth and then to Penny Island, Bridgehaven, and Willowcreek. We saw lots of seals and birds but no otters this time. The boatless among us rented kayaks, here are the details if you'd like to do the same: John of Lotus Kayak Rentals has singles and doubles for $20 per person for a half day. Call him at (707) 865-9604 to reserve. Look for his red truck in the gravel parking lot on the left just past the boat ramp, see photo. Watertreks has nicer kayaks for $45, call 707-865-2249 to reserve from them. They have a kiosk on the right as you enter town, see photo. It's best to get there at 9 am, and pick a day when light winds are forecast.

Airport Bike Ride 2011

Sculptured/Secret Beach Adventure

A hike to Sculptured Beach and Secret Beach at Pt Reyes during a minus tide. We explored the sea tunnels and caves, passed thru the arches and checked out the sinkhole. It drizzled at times, but wasn't too bad. Cheryl and I opted to continue exploring the tunnels and tidepools while the rest of the group hiked up into the misty mountains. We picked them up at the Sky Trail trailhead; they were soaking wet! We all celebrated a successful adventure with brunch at the Station House Cafe in Pt Reyes Station.

We took a new route via the Queenstone FR this year. At about 9.5 miles and 2400' of elevation gain this hike is a great workout, and features beautiful views of the bay area.

Sculptured Beach 2011

A 12 mile loop hike from Limantour Beach up to Sky Camp with a return via Sculptured Beach. We timed this to reach Sculptured Beach during a -.5' low tide, which allowed access to Sculptured Beach and Secret Beach. The weather wasn't ideal, but it didn't faze this high-spirited group. Kelham Beach Hike

A 10 to 12 mile hike from Bear Valley to Kelham Beach at Pt Reyes. Our objective was to get to Real Secret Beach thru a sea tunnel that would be exposed by a -.44' low tide. The wind and wave forecast was favorable, but you never know what you will find until you get there. We split up into two groups, a fearless group that took the risky but exhilarating Arch Rock route, and a sane group that took the safe stairs of the Kelham Beach Trail. It was clear until we got to the coast, but the beach was very foggy. Then it started clearing and we had some glorious sunshine and great views.

East Annadel Hike

A loop hike on the east side of Annadel starting from the Lawndale trailhead and looping around the marsh on the Marsh Trail and the Ridge Trail. Airport Bike Rid

A scenic bike ride around the airport, including a brief stop at the Pacific Coast Air Museum to admire their large collection of vintage aircraft. We had panoramic views of local peaks as we toured on backroads. We rode together for the first 5 miles, then split up into 3 groups to do 10, 14, or 22 mile rides.

A 10 mile round trip hike at Pt Reyes from Pierce Ranch to the northern tip of Tomales Point. It was rutting season for the Tule Elk, so the bulls were bugling, rounding up harems of cows, and intimidating smaller bulls to keep them away. Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Perseids 2010

An ovenight camping trip at Lake Sonoma to view the 2010 Perseid Meteor Shower. Bummer Peak Camp is a good spot for this- it's only a 40 minute drive from Santa Rosa and a 2 mile hike in, but it's got a dark sky and best of all, no neighbors. The Milky Way was gorgeous, and the meteors appeared on schedule. About 4 am I looked south and saw that fog had flowed in, covering the lake like a thick layer of whipping cream. By 5 am wisps of fog were blowing over us, and by dawn we were socked in, making for a nice cool hike out.

Alamere Falls 2010

These photos actually by Cheryl. Two hikes to Alamere Falls at Point Reyes National Seashore. We dropped off some hikers at Five Brooks to do a 12 mile thru hike to Wildcat Beach, Alamere Falls and Palomarin. The rest of us drove to Palomarin and hiked to Alamere Falls where the Five Brooks group joined us. We stopped at Bass Lake on the way back and cooled off with a swim.

Minus Tide Hike II

We just did this adventure a month ago, but some people didn't get enough! There was more sand this time, making for easier going until we got to the keyhole. About 2 feet of sand had washed away from that point, so most of the group did some rock climbing. I took the wading route, and got soaked by a wave.

McClures to Kehoe

A four mile hike from McClures Beach to Kehoe Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore. This is called the “Unknown Coast” because it is inaccessible except a few times of the year when the tide is especially low. We took advantage of a -1.47' tide, but due to a storm in the Gulf of Alaska we had 20 kt winds and a 9' swell that created a higher water level, so conditions were not ideal. The Unknown Coast

A minus tide adventure at Point Reyes National Seashore. Conditions were very good and we were able to accomplish all of our goals. We hiked out the Kehoe Beach Trail and then north on Kehoe Beach. We navigated a boulder field, climbed thru the keyhole and then scrambled over mussel-covered rocks to the beach beyond. After an easy walk up the beach we picked our way over seaweed-covered rocks and ledges thru and beside tide pools to the sea tunnel. We passed thru the sea tunnel, admiring the colorful tidepool creatures and popped out on the beach beyond. We walked a short distance up the beach, and there it was- Ribbon Falls! To the north we could see Elephant Rock, and it would have been easy to continue all the way to McClures Beach. Instead we turned around and retraced our steps as the tide rose.

Wildcat Camp

An overnight backpacking trip to Wildcat Camp at Point Reyes National Seashore organized by our friend Nick. Cheryl, Matt and I hiked in from Palomarin with a side trip up to the Double Point overlook where we had lunch. Nick, Rich, Kit, Brenda, and Joel hiked in from Bear Valley via Arch Rock. We set up camp and then an afternoon low tide and mild surf allowed us to explore the north end of Wildcat Beach. We returned to camp for happy hour, dinner, and then enjoyed the sunset. The next morning we hiked out; cars at both ends allowed some of us to do thru hikes, and then we rendezvoused at the Station House Cafe in Pt Reyes Station for lunch. Pictures by Paul and Cheryl.

Mt Burdell 2010

A 7 mile hike with 1400 feet of elevation gain to the top of Mt Burdell from the Novato side. The Mt Burdell Open Space Preserve is a gem with panoramic views, huge ancient oaks, and beautiful meadows. This time of year it's green and has lots of wildflowers. It's a very pleasant hike with a steep climb, a lunch spot with a view of the bay, and then a relaxing ramble back down to the trailhead.

Two waterfalls at the end of Mountain View Ave, San Rafael, CA. I was in San Rafael on business right after a storm, so I knew these waterfalls would be flowing well. They are in separate canyons just a few hundred feet apart.

Glen Camp/Arch Rock Hike

A 12 mile hike with 1500 feet of elevation gain at Point Reyes National Seashore. We hiked out the Bear Valley Trail and took the Glen Trail to Glen Camp where we had lunch. Then we cut over to the Coast Trail and hiked north to Arch Rock. Some of us did a little rock scrambling to get down thru the arch and then hiked north on Kelham Beach and back up on the Coast Trail, where they met up with the rest of the group. From there we hiked back in on the Bear Valley Trail.

Sky Camp Trip

An overnight trip to Sky Camp at Point Reyes National Seashore. It's only a 1.4 mile hike in, so after setting up camp we did some day hikes. Cheryl and I checked out Limantour Estero at low tide, while Nick led the rest of the group down Sky Trail and Woodward Valley Trail to Sculptured Beach. After hiking back in to camp we had happy hour and dinner, then as the full moon rose we threw a lighted frisbee. Before bed we went for a short moonlight walk and did some star gazing. We woke up about 3 am to the sound of rain on our tents. Fortunately it was tapering off as we packed up and hiked out. We capped off the trip with breakfast at the Station House Cafe in Pt Reyes Station. Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Big Rock Ridge Hike

A hike to the top of beautiful Big Rock Ridge, the second-highest peak in Marin County. 11 miles, 2600 feet of total elevation gain. We had a glorious day with visibility so good we could see the snow-capped Sierras on the eastern horizon.

Sweetwater Springs Wildflower Walk

A walk on scenic Sweetwater Springs Rd, a backroad with beautiful scenery and little traffic. 6 miles, 925 feet of elevation gain. This walk is ideal after a rain when trails are muddy. We started 3.4 miles from Westside Rd, where redwood groves grow beside Porter Creek. We viewed Redwood Orchids and Trilliums as we walked under the redwoods, then Checker Lilies, Hounds Tongue, and Shooting Stars as the road passed thru more open terrain. The third mile is a steep climb that offers great views of the Santa Rosa plain and surrounding hills. After enjoying the view from the top we returned by the same route. Wildcat Camp

An overnight backpacking trip to Wildcat Camp at Point Reyes National Seashore. This trip was timed for a full moon and a minus tide. The highlight of the trip was viewing Phantom Falls, which is fed by a small ephemeral creek and falls 160' onto Wildcat Beach. We also saw Alamere Falls, which was really flowing. A hike at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. First we viewed the waterfall, which was looking good with the recent rains. Then we climbed Bald Mt, where we had lunch and enjoyed the view. About 7 miles, with 2000' of elevation gain. Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Pt Reyes Wildlife 2010

A North Bay Hikes trip to Point Reyes including Drakes Beach, the Lighthouse, Chimney Rock, and McClures Beach. We saw elephant seals up close on Drakes Beach, then took the shuttle bus to the lighthouse and looked for whales with no luck. We then took another bus to Chimney Rock, where we watched several pairs of bull elephant seals fighting over the harems of females. We then hiked out the Chimney Rock Trail where we saw more elephant seals with pups, and a peregrine falcon. After returning to Drakes Beach by bus we drove to McClures Beach in hopes of getting into Elephant Rock Cave. However, the surf was huge so it was too dangerous. Recent storms had also washed the sand off McClures Beach, leaving a moonscape of barren rocks.

Snowshoe Trip

A snowshoe daytrip to Donner Summit. Hike leader Rich Turner and 11 others snowshoed the lakes route at Donner Summit, South of Boreal Ski area and East of Donner Ski Ranch. The loop was about 4 miles long and climbed peaks with panoramic views. The highest elevation reached was around 7600 feet and total elevation gained was around 750 feet. Coast Camp Trip

An overnight trip to Pont Reyes taking advantage of a minus tide to explore the fantastic rock formations of Sculptured Beach, Secret Beach and Point Resistance. Nick brought some firewood, so we had a fire on the beach after dinner, and we saw a few meteors from the Leonid meteor shower. We hiked out on Monday and had lunch at the Station House Cafe in Pt Reyes Station. What a fun trip!

An overnighter at the free campground at Boggs Mt Demonstration State Forest, near Cobb. We did a short hike on Sunday and a longer hike on Monday.

Sculptured Beach Hike

A 12 mile loop hike from Limantour Beach up to Sky Camp, then down to Sculptured Beach and back to Limantour. This was timed to take advantage of a -.24' low tide which allowed us to explore the arches and tunnels of Sculptured Beach. Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Camping on Angel Island

A two day one night camping trip to Angel Island during Fleet Week, organized by Rich Turner. Activities included watching the Blue Angels practicing and hiking up, down, and around the island. These are mostly Cheryl's pictures.

Wildcat Backpacking Trip

An easy two day one night backpacking trip to Wildcat Camp at Point Reyes. A few day hikers joined us part way on the hike from the Bear Valley Visitor Center to Wildcat Camp. After setting up camp we headed for the beach. A .4' low tide allowed us to get to a beautiful arch and grotto known as "The Temple" at the north end of Wildcat Beach. After dinner we enjoyed the sunset and then walked south on Wildcat Beach in the fading light. We waited at Alamere Falls while the moon rose, then walked back by moonlight. In the morning we hiked out, and then had lunch at the Station House Cafe in Point Reyes Station. Nick says he's ready to do it again! Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Bodega Walk

A five mile walk on scenic Salmon Creek Rd and Fitzpatrick Ln, dead end roads west of the hamlet of Bodega. Afterward we had a going-away-picnic for our friend Missy at Watson School Historic Park, on Bodega Hwy. Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Jenner to Duncans Mills Paddle

A 6 mile paddle on the Russian River, from Jenner to Duncans Mills. We paddle upstream because the current is negligible but the wind is a major factor. Most of us brought our own boats, but some rented from Russian River Outfitters. You can also rent kayaks in Jenner from Watertreks and Lotus Kayaks.

Mt Wittenberg Hike

A 10.9 mile hike at Point Reyes, climbing the Mt Wittenberg Trail and looping around to Sky Camp via the Z Ranch, Horse, and Sky Trails. We continued on Sky Trail to Baldy Trail, and then returned via the Bear Valley Trail. Fog drip keeps this area green, a nice change from the dryness of most other local parks. Jenner Paddle

A three hour paddle on the Russian River from Jenner to the mouth and then to Penny Island and Bridgehaven. We saw lots of seals and birds, as well as some young sea lions and a group of four otters. The boatless among us rented kayaks from John of Lotus Kayak Rentals, (707) 865-9604, at the Visitor Center/boat ramp in Jenner. Half day is only $20 per person. It's best to get there at 9 am so you can get in a couple of hours of paddling before the wind starts blowing.

Perseids 2009

An overnight hike-in campout at Lake Sonoma's Bummer Peak camp. We viewed the Perseid Meteor Shower during the night, seeing a few earth grazers just after dinner and several dozen good ones during the night. Around 1 am we were seeing about 1 per minute. Another North Bay Hikes outing.

Alamere Falls

Two hikes to Alamere Falls at Point Reyes National Seashore. We dropped off 10 hikers at Five Brooks to do a 12 mile thru hike to Wildcat Beach, Alamere Falls and Palomarin. The other 15 of us drove to Palomarin and hiked to Alamere Falls where the Five Brooks group joined us. We stopped at Bass Lake on the way back and cooled off with a swim. Lake Sonoma Hike-Swim

A 7 mile hike part way around the Warm Springs arm of Lake Sonoma. This hike included some cross country and a 3/4 mile swim. The lake level was 437'. Another North Bay Hikes adventure.

Willow Creek to Shell Beach

A 9.5 mile through hike from Willow Creek to Shell Beach with 1600' of elevation gain. The route started up the Full Monty Trail, dropped down to Willow Creek Rd via the Lower Old Barn Trail, and after lunch at Pomo Canyon Campground we took the Pomo Canyon Trail to Shell Beach. Ring Mountain

A hike at Ring Mountain, near Corte Madera, Marin County, led by Ray of the Petaluma Paddlers. The sights included the rare Tiburon Mariposa Lily and many other wildflowers, unusual geology, and native American artifacts. Updated with a few pictures from the June 1, 2010 trip.

Salt Point Hike

A 7 mile hike with Coastwalk.org at Salt Point State Park. Hike leader Gregory Fearon shuttled us to the Horseshoe Cove area and we hiked down the coast to Gerstle Cove. This hike featured seascapes, abundant wildflowers, and two waterfalls.
