the site of the orginal transducer with a 13/16" hole.
The inside view of the old transducer mount. This is located under a seat in the salon. The starter battery shares this space with the transducer.
The old transducer and housing are on the left the new system is on the right.
The new transducer requires that the hole in the hull be enlarged. To accomplish this we filled the old hole with thickened epoxy to provide the auger bit on the hole saw a purchase when we drill the new hole.
With the epoxy hardened it is time to drill the hole. We started by drilling a 1/8" hole from the inside out to locate the correct spot. We then drilled the 2" hole from the outside in to limit splittering & damage to the exterior hull.
The hole enlarged to 2"
with the hole completed it is time to focus on shaping the mounting block. fortunately the boat yard allowed us to use their band saw to cut the block to match the deadrise angle of the hull.
the half that Bud is filing will be on the exterior and the half in the foreground will be on the interior.
once the we ripped the block to the correct angle we then trimmed the upper flange (seen in previous image) off the block.
Bud used a rasp to sculpt the housings to match the curvature of the hull.
Once everything is fitted we taped off the area in preparation for mounting the block with 5200. Note the forward 3/8" hole for the antirotation bolt.
Working as a team Bud adhered the exterior block and I worked on the interior section.
The threaded, bronze thru hull tube has a large nut on the interior and the anti-rotation bolt, located under the yellow triangle, has a interior nut. Tightening the two interior nuts pulls the the two halves tight against the hull.
The interior view. It is important to wipe the 5200 off the threads of the thru hull tube and anti-rotation bolt.
Here is the final product awaiting bottom paint.
after waiting 3 days for the 5200 to cure, I insterted and wired the transducer. The starter battery still fits forward of the new transducer, but due to the increased size of the mounting block a new shelf and straps were required for the battery.
