Japan time traveling
I found an incredibly cheap ticket to Japan for January, so made an emergency takoyaki trip back to Nippon. Why not, ne? It was pretty surreal seeing Kiso and old friends, especially during my visit to the high schools I taught at. Everything was the same save that I was no longer there, and standing in front of the classroom for a quick 'konnichiwa', I felt like I had never even left. The week wound up being something of a whirlwind tour, starting off with a bang at Masa's restaurant, Chikara, for a reunion party, heading up to Matsumoto for a night on the town, back to the Kiso Valley, down to Kyoto, and finally to Nagoya to head home. As cheesy as it sounds, I felt like the trip provided some closure on my whole Japan experience. Although I miss my friends and old life, I think I made the right decision in getting on with life and grad school. And anyway, whenever I get a little nostalgic for Japan, it's reassuring to know Kiso will still be there, ready to welcome me back.
