Rocky Road Trip Day 12
Day 12 – 9/12/07
We got a good start today, down the 24, and had breakfast in Loa after which we headed into Capital Reef National Park. Again, like most parks, the scenery was something to behold with impressive geological formations everywhere you look.
After exploring the park we ran south on the 12 to Boulder where we turned on to "Hells Backbone", which is a 35 mile, all dirt, loop that runs over a mesa, through a forest and up to and along a mountain ridge line. At the summit the ridge you are traveling over dives down into a chasm so a bridge was constructed to span the two peaks. The views were incredible and well worth the miles of washboarded roads climbing and descending the mountains though a variety of terrain. We saw some wild turkey, eagles and Mountain Cows which are a special breed of Extreme Cow. (Why ranchers let their cattle graze in a forest on the side of a mountain is beyond me. Must make round up time challenging.) The Hells Backbone eventually rejoins
