Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" rally with Kathy Griffin
Terrific short rally on Freedom Plaza to draw attention to repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Kathy Griffin led this with the Human Rights Campaign as part of her show "My Life on the D-List." Kathy read some moving messages from those affected by the policy. I'll always remember the message from the man who cannot be notified if his partner, a solider, is killed in war. The soldier's sister will be contacted instead. How cruel. Lt. Dan Choi and others joined the rally. I've read criticisms of the rally as a publicity stunt, but this rally will have reached far more people via Kathy's show than even the largest rallies and protests do. This type of event doesn't take the place of protests that bring together many organizations and people from throughout the community -- it complements it. And because this wasn't a traditional protest event, it was short and sweet, which was ok by me. And it was the only protest I've been to that included loud disco music and a text message from Cher.
