We also had this green tea mousse/pie. Andi had her fill of green tea after eating this and some of the parfait! Very good though.

The crowd waiting to see Daimonji
There it is! It is the culmination of the O-Bon festival on August 16th, in which five giant bonfires are lit on mountains surrounding the city. It signifies the moment when the spirits of deceased family members, who are said to visit this world during O-Bon, are believed to be returning to the spirit world—thus the name Okuribi (送り火) (roughly, "send-off fire").
It appears smaller on the photo than it actually was
Aki with the beer vending machine
More vending machines. I want these in America!
Took a day tour in Kyoto. This is a map of a famous rock garden temple (Ryoanji)
Our tour guide with the map
The rock garden. The garden consists of raked gravel and fifteen moss-covered boulders, which are placed so that, when looking at the garden from any angle (other than from above) only fourteen of the boulders are visible at one time. It is traditionally said that only through attaining enlightenment would one be able to view the fifteenth boulder.
Room facing the rock garden. I love those doors.
Map of the second stop on our tour - Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion). It was a war lord's villa turned into zen temple upon his death. It was arsoned in 1950 and rebuilt in 1955. It has 3 floors, each with different architecture. The first floor contains a Buddha's remains.

View from the top of the temple on the mountain.
Beneath the main hall is the Otowa waterfall, where three channels of water fall into a pond. Visitors can catch and drink the waters, which is believed to have therapeutic properties. Drinking the water of the three streams is said to confer wisdom, health, and longevity. However, some Japanese believe that you must choose only two; if you are greedy and drink from all three, you invite misfortune upon yourself
It was very hot and humid
Yummy custard cream puff on the way down from the temple
Look at those cakes! At Kyoto station.

The Kaminarimon (雷門, "Thunder Gate") is the outer of two large entrance gates that ultimately leads to the Sensō-ji (the inner being the Hōzōmon) in Asakusa, Tokyo
Fūjin (風神) is the Japanese god of the wind and one of the eldest Shinto gods. He is said to have been present at the creation of the world and when he first let the winds out of his bag, they cleared the morning mists and filled the Gate between heaven and earth so the sun shone.
Raijin (雷神) is a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology. His name is derived from the Japanese words rai (雷, meaning thunder) and shin (神, god). He is typically depicted as a demon beating drums to create thunder, usually with the symbol tomoe drawn on the drums.
We came back later when these shops (in between the gate and the temple) were open, but it was great that they were closed because each door had something painted on it.
The Hōzōmon (宝蔵門, "Treasure-House Gate") is the inner of two large entrance gates that ultimately leads to the Sensō-ji

This is the man who made the dolls! He's at the museum once a month and he was there when we were, it was so exciting! He's signing Andi's book of his dolls here. He said one of his white haired dolls is named Andi!
He had me write my name so he'd know how to spell it
Aki's mom and grandmother were excited too. :)

Entering Itchiku Kubota Art Museum. It is Itchiku Kubota's personal museum and he designed the garden in the next several pictures.
Postcard from Itchiku Kubota Art Museum. GORGEOUS kimono art! He modernized a lost technique called Tsujigahana. His process includes stitching, tye-dying, and taking the stitches out. It takes a year to make each one. He wanted to make 80 of the seasons and Mt. Fuji, but he only completed 46 before he passed away. His assistants are working on completing his work. They are so beautiful!

Narita-san (成田山 'Narita mountain') Shinshō-ji (新勝寺 'New victory temple') is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in central Narita, Chiba, Japan. It was founded in 940 by Kanchō Daisōjō, a disciple of Kōbō Daishi. It is a lead temple in the Chisan branch (Chisan-ha 智山派) of New Shingon (Shingi Shingon 新義真言宗), includes a large complex of buildings and grounds, and is one of the best-known temples in the Kantō region. It is dedicated to Fudō myōō ('Unmovable Wisdom King', known as Ācala in Sanskrit), who is usually depicted holding a sword and rope and surrounded by flames. Often called a fire god, he is associated with fire rituals.
