Whinfell ridge

I met Martin for a walk along the Whinfell ridge , we started from Huck's bridge and for a change we walked along the Borrowdale valley first then back along the ridge to Huck's bridge , very cold and windy with very frequant hail and snow showers but it is still a lovely walk

I met Martin and Claire at Longdale we walked up Langdale beck to Uldale then along the valley to Blackthwaite bottom and up to Docker knott , Overside and Taffergill head then down to Wethercal moss and up to Simon's seat and along the ridge to Middleton

Arnison crag , Birks and St Sunday crag

A very windy and wet day don't let the first few photos fool you with the blue sky , I was joined by Lesley for a few more tops for her collection of Wainwrights . We started from Patterdale straight up to Arnison crag then Birks and St Sunday crag we had planned on going to Grisedale tarn and back down Grisedale but we couldn't stand up on St Sunday so went back down Birks to Patterdale

Direct ascent of Long side with Ullock pike ,Carlside ,Skiddaw and Randel crag

I met Martin at High side car park for a direct ascent of Long side , we set off up Southerdale to Carlside tarn we skirted around Carlside to get to Long side first then we di Ullock pike then Carlside and up to Skiddaw then down the steep scree to Randel crag and back down the ridge

Short walk today , I was going to ascend High crag vie High crag butress but the wind was so strong it was hard to stand up so went up to Gamlin end and along the ridge to High stile and Red pike then down to Dodd and back via the high level path

I met up with Alan ,Martin and Claire today we started from Park foot with a nice easy walk up to Arthurs pike then on to Bonscale pike ,Loadpot hill and Wether hill then we dropped down to Brownthraite crag and along to Pikeawassa (Steel knott)

Wander round Little Langdale and Tilberthwaite

Raining again today so just decided to have a wander , didn't know where I was heading when I set off I ended up going past Colwith force , the Cathedral cave , Slaters bridge then up to Greenburn mines I was going to go up to Wetherlam but decided against it as the cloud was down and it was raining heavy so went up the intake wall to great intake then down to Tilberthwaite and Hodge close and back over Black crag to Skelwith

I met up with Martin we started from Seathwaite we set off up Grains gill past Great end to Sprinkling tarn and down to Sty head then round to Napes needle where we "threaded the needle " then passed the Sphinx rock then headed to Beck head and passed below Gable crag to windy gap we then headed to Green gable and back down Gillercomb

Troutbeck round

I met Lesley at Troutbeck for Lesley's challenge walk to Ill bell , we set off down Ing lane past Troutbeck tongue to Scott rake which Lesley hadn't done before but enjoyed this way up to Froswick once up the wind was really cold so we pressed on to Ill bell Lesleys challenge and Favourite fell ( I don't need to tell you that ) now onto Yoke and back to Garburn road and down to Limefitt caravan park , another good day just a pity about the cold weather and clouds

I met Martin at Grasmere to do a direct ascent of Blea rigg and my AW society challenge of Pavey ark , we set off up Easdale to Easdale tarn then straight up Blea rigg then onto Stickle tarn for lunch while we look at our route up via Jack's rake , once at the top of Jack's rake it's a short walk to Pavey ark summit my challenge for today then we skirted round Thunacar knott to Sergeant man then across to Coledale head now down Broadstone head and onto Calf crag now we decided to go along the ridge to Gibson knott and Helm crag

Pillar rock from Gatescarth

I met up with Martin and Paul who would be our climbing guide for the ascent of Pillar rock which Martin needed to conclude his collection of Birkett fells . We started from Gatesgarth went over Scarth gap to Ennerdale then straight up to Pillar rock then we lunch were the rain started then turned to hailstones not good condotions to climbup Pillar rock once done we headed past Robinson's Cairn to Looking steed and down Black sails and back over Scarth gap , a long day we started out at 9am got back about 8.30pm

Dow crag via the South rake , COM ,Brim fell ,Swirl hows ,Great carrs and Wet side edge

The forecast wasn't good today so I decided to get the bus to Coniston , I walked up Walna scar road then headed to Goats water for an ascent to Dow crag via the south rake to keep away from the crowds then it was a straight forward walk to COM , Brim fell ,Swirl hows ,Great carrs ,Little carrs and back down Wet side edge to Greenburn then a nice stroll back to Skelwith as I got to Slaters bridge the heavens opened and it lashed it down all the way back

I met up with Lesley and Linda at Tilberthwaite ( Bev should of been with us today but couldn't make ) we set up to Dry cove bottom then up Steel edge for an elevenses at the small tarn then onto Wetherlam summit down to Swirl hawse and up Prison band to Swirl hawse and across to Grey Friar then up to Great carrs and Little carrs then the plesent return down Wet Side edge to Greenburn and back round Little Langdale to Tilberthwaite

Not the walk I had intended , bus problems again "lol" a change of time table . I had intended to do Bowfell and Crinckle crags but the next bus was 2 hours away so I just set off to Loughrigg it was too hot for Bowfell anyway thats mu excuse anyway .

The Screes path ,Illgill head and Whin Rigg

I met up with Martin ,Alan and Claire at Nether wasdale we set of over Cinderdale bridge then followed the path to Easthwaite farm where you pick up the the start of the Screes path , the views just get better and better as go further along looking up Wast water to Wasdale head , good job it was sunny and dry wouldn't like to do this route in the rain , once at the end of Wast water we took a sharp right up to Illgill head then on to Whin rigg and back down Greathall gill then a well needed pint in the Screes pub

Sheffield pike ,Raise ,White side ,Lower man , Helvellyn ,Catstyecam

I met Martin at the car park at Mossdale .The rain was bouncing down not looking good the cloud was right down to but we carried on , we set off up Glencoyne to where the trees finish then we followed the wall up to just below Heron pike where we cut a direct route up to Sheffield pike , a bit misty on Sheffield pike so no good views down Ullswater . we carried on up Sticks pass then up to Raise across to White side and Helvellyn lower man then up to Helvellyn , very busy today glad to get away , down Swirral edge to Catstyecam , fantastic views from here , now we went down the north edge to Brown cove we had a quick explore of the old dams then headed back to Glenridding for a nice pint in the Travelers rest

I met Martin and Claire we started at Loweswater village we set off past Maggies bridge to Loweswater then up through Holme wood then up the nose of Burnbank fell for a direct ascent then onto Blake fell for lunch then onto Gavel fell , we decided to go to Floutern cop to keep to the higher ground en-route to Hen comb the we descended down to Little dodd and finished in the Kirkstile inn

Started from Skelwith fold then walked to Elterwater then up Dow bank and along to Silver how and Blea rigg to Coledale head and Sergeant man then on to High raise and down to Thurnacar knott , Pavey ark and across to harrison stickle then down past Stickle tarn and down Stickle ghyll to the New dungeon ghyll hotel then the long walk back to Chapel stile and Elterwater for a well deserved pint of Bluebird in the Britannia before the walk back round Elterwater to Skelwith a nice 16.2 miles

I met Martin at Troutbeck we set off across Limefitt park then up to Garburn road then up to Sallows for a direct ascent ,then we went down Garburn road to Kentmere then we walked up the beautiful valley of Kentmere to Rainsborrow crag then went straight up Rainsborrow crag starting from the Reservoir cottages up past the dissused quarries emerging just bellow Rainsborrow tarn then carried on up to Yoke then the nice easy walk back

Troutbeck round

This was not my planned walk I had intended on Hartsop above how ,Hart crag ,Fairfield ,Cofa pike , St Sunday carg and Gavel pike but couldn't get over Kirkstone pass because of the snow so turned around and parked at Troutbeck near Limefitt caravan park then walked down Ings lane to Troutbeck park and up Troutbeck tongue then up to Froswick via Scott rake then onto Ill bell and Yoke all done in the mist so no photos today

Lanzarote , A walk up Montana Corona

We had a week's winter break in Lanzarote the weather was a perfect 20 odd degrees every day (sorry) after a few days laying about sun bathing I had to get out for a walk , there was a hill I could see from Costa Taguise that looked inviting so off I went I had no idea how to get there so just walked in the direction of the hill ( Montana Corona ) finally the road ended and I was Faced with crossing a volcanic wasteland very dificult walking but finally got to the path up , it was like walking on marbles not too bad going up but dangerous getting down we also had a day at fire mountain in the Timanfaya National park .

I met Alan and Martin at Cow bridge car park ,it was a lovely sunny frosty morning perfect conditions , we set off up Hartsop dodd first from Hartsop then onto Stony cove pike along Caudale moor then along St Ravens edge until we dropped down to the Kirkstone inn then across the road and straight up to Red screes summit then we dropped down to Middle dodd and down the very frosty nose to Brothers water , a few more Wainwrights for Alan only one to go now

I met up with Lesley at Hartsop it was a cloudy day I think this was the ideal walk as we were just out of the cloud all day, we set of up to Brock crags first , a nice grass path behind the pumping house straight up then onto Both Angletarn pikes and then the nice walk to Beda fell and back to Boredale hause and Hartsop a cold but enjoyable walk

I started from Grasmere it was a lovely frosty morning I set off up Helm crag then along the ridge to Gibson knott and Calf crag then made the dessision to go up to Greenup edge to Ullscarf to extend the walk a bit otherwise I would of been back home for 12. then back to Greenup edge and along to Steel fell a lovely walk on a perfect day

I met Martin and Claire at Gale road car park and as forecast it was lashing it down ,we set off up the tourist route for a direct ascent of Little man then onto Sliddaw , very windy up here it was hard to stand up we were glad to get to Bakestones out of the wind , then we descended down Birkett edge to the cumbrian way then to Skiddaw house and round to the path under Lonscale crags ,a great path

Hartsop dodd ,Stony cove pike ,Thornthwaite crag ,High street and The Knott

Started from Hartsop car park for the steep ascent of Hartsop dodd , part way up I was in the mist and it stayed like that all day no views at all today , on the descent of Stony cove pike to Threshthwaite mouth the snow was waist deep this made it very hard going as it's a very steep path , then up to Gray crag and Thornthwaite beacon and on to High street and the Knott then descended down to Hayes water and Hartsop

Blencathra via Doddick fell , Sharp edge and Gategill fell

I met Martin at Scales , it was snowing quite heavy so it wasn't looking good for the day but the weather changed it was sunny and bright but a bloody cold wind .The plan was to ascend Doddick fell then to Atkinson pike and on to Blencathra summit and back down Gategill fell but once up Doddick fell Sharp edge looked too good to miss so me dropped down to Scales tarn then back up Sharp edge well worth the extra effort today as conditions were perfect then up to Atkinson pike and Blencathra and back down Gategill fell

I met Martin at the car park near the Travellers rest at Grasmere for a direct ascent of Calf crag , we set off up Green burn to Green burn bottom then up to Rough crag and Calf crag we had planned to go back down Gibson knott and Helm crag but we would of been back down too early so we decided to go to Tarn crag and Greathead crag then down Far easdale gill and then a swift pint in the Travellers rest

I met up with Lesley for a walk up Scandale past High sweden bridge to Scandale pass then past Scandale tarn to Little hart crag then onto High hartsop dodd there was plenty of snow about with some deep drifts to get through which was fun but there was a really biting cold wind we just got back to Ambleside before it went dark

But the day started perfect with a new covering of snow overnight , Set off through Limefitt park and up to Garburn road and on to Yoke then down to Rainsborrow crag and tarn then carried on to Ill Bell and Froswick then back down to Troutbeck via Scott rake and Troutbeck park

Whiteless pike , Crag hill

I met Martin at Lanthwaite then took one car to Rannerdale , the morning started beautiful ,frosty and sunny but not for long once on Whiteless pike the cloud came in so we went to Crag hill just in case there was a chance of some views but not to be , the plan was to do Hopegill head and Whiteside but in the mist we decided to to return down Gasgale gill as neither of us had been down it before well worth a walk a bit rough in places with loads of waterfalls

I met Martin at Stonethwaite we set up Stonethwaite beck to Greenup gill then on to Lining crag with great views back down the valley and then onto Greendup edge then to White stones and High Raise just in time for lunch , a cold wind was blowing on High Raise glad to get back down in the valleys ,now it was down to Stake pass first then the lovely walk down Langstrath and back for a pint in Stonethwaite

Barf , Lords seat ,Broom fell and Greystones

I met Lesley , Ray and Bross at Whinlatter we started with a nice walk through the woods to Lords seat then dropped down to Barf with some nice views over Bassenthwaite then off to Broom fell and Greystones a nice grassy walk with not too much climbing , the weather was kind to only one short shower the rest of the day was dry , a lovely walk this one .

I met up with Martin and Lesley we started from the car park at Brunt crag near Dockray , we set off up and across Watermillock common then up to Birkett fell and on to Hart side then back down the way we came untill we reached the steps over the wall to the miners path under Glencoyne head to Sheffield pike and heron pike then added Glenridding dodd for Lesley's Wainwright collection , another great day shame about the clag being right down

I met Martin at Little town , we set off past the old mine workings to Hause gate then up to Maiden moor and carried on to High spy then dropped down to Dale head tarn , now the start of the steep climb to Dale head summit , there were great views looking North but it looked grim to the South west , We stopped for lunch just past Dale head then it was just a nice walk to Robinson and back down Blea crags and High snob bank

I met up with Martin at Seathwaite we left one car there and the other at Honister hause where we started from up the Quarry road for a direct ascent of Brandreth , a nice easy path this one then onto Green gable and round to Beckhead under Gable crag where we got our first view of Wast water then around the scree slopes under Great napes untill we got to Napes needle and the Sphynx rock , we then climbed up to napes needle so we could pass through the gap behind it threading the needle as it's known . Now it was a nice stroll back to Seathwaite past Taylorgil force waterfalls

A nice bright day for a change , got the bus to the new dungeon ghyll and went up to Stickle tarn then onto Pavey ark via Jacks rake and on to Thurnacar knotts there was was a real bitting cold wind blowing feels winter today , then the nice easy walk up to High raise and back to Seareant man with nice views all around , I can see my way back to Skelwith from here down to Blae rigg and Silver how , A nice bright sunny day with graet views

Fleetwith pike , Haystacks and Seat

I was lucky enough to meet up with Lesley and Linda today for a walk up Fleetwith pike from Gatesgarth we went across to Black star then down to Dubs quarry where we had lunch out of the wind then we carried on to Haystacks where Lesley took for a walk around Innominate tarn looking for a plaque that we didn't find , then onto the summit then we made our way down to Scarth gap and up to Seat before descending back down to Gatesgarth , another great day with lots of laughs and chattering from one un-named member .

A wonder round Little Langdale and Lingmoor fell

After the heavy rain early this morning I abandoned my original plans but mid morning the rain stopped so I decided to just wonder about aimlesly , I started off with just my packlight jacket and camera with me heading to Skelwith force for some phots then thought Lingmoor looks inviting as the skies cleared so that was the plan up to Lingmoor then back to Slaters bridge the cathedral cave and back round Little Langdale , did I get wet when the rain started again !!

Bowfell

Started from the Old Dungeon ghyll hotel , I had planned doing Crinkle crags and Pike'O'Blisco then walking back through Little Langdale but it was raining so hard I decided to just do Bowfell as Crinkle crags are slippy at the best of times but today would of been madness .it had rained all night and was getting heavier as the day went on I decided to go up the climbers traverse and up the great slab as this was on the sheltered side of Bowfell to try and keep out of the wind a little , I haven't been out in rain like this for a long time . I just came back down the Band had a pint and got the bus back

Brim fell ,C,O,M , Dow crag

I met up with Martin for a direct ascent of Brim fell , we started from Walna acar road then walked across to boulder valley and up Brim fell end past an old mine still with rail tracks and a trolly cart inside wish I had my head torch with me for a deeper lok into it . once on Brim fell we were in the cloud so not many photos , then it was onto C,O,M which was full of people as per usual . down to goats hawse and a direct route to the south rake up across the scree field , a much easier route than it looks ,better than going down to Goats water then back up , we headed up the south rake to Dow crag then a nice stoll back to the car

I met up with Martin and Clair we started from Tilberthwaite where we bumped into Gary ,Sheena and Tim also doing a walk around Greenburn , our plan was to walk to the head of Greenburn then up Broad slack to Great carrs but the cloud was right down so we decided to go along Wet side edge to Little carrs then to Great carrs and across to Grey frier and back up to Swirl hows down Prison band to Swirl hawse and up to Wetherlam then down Steel edge back to Tilberthwaite

Red screes , High Bakestones ,High pike and Low pike

The day started cloudy and rainy , I walked to Ambleside from Skelwith then up the struggle to the start of the path to Red screes , it wasn't long before I was in the cloud with just the occasional break in it , as I dropped down to Scandale pass the clouds started to lift giving some views then it was up to High Bakestones cairn then along the ridge to High pike and Low pike where the sun came out with some lovely blue sky

High Stile ,Red Pike , Starling dodd and Great Borne

I met Martin and Claire we started from Buttermere , not a good looking day low cloud and the prospect of rain . we alked part way through Burtness wood then up to the ridge going up to High Stile this is a nice quiet ridge full of heather , it gets bit steep near the top but not to difficult , once on High stile it was a straight forward walk to Red pike then we dropped down to Starling dodd and Great Borne and back round Floutern tarn to Buttermere for a well deserved pint

I up with Martin , we started from the new dungeon ghyll car park and headed up Pike how to Harrison stickle via a small gully up the south side a much more interesting way up then we went across to Pike O Stickle and across Martcrag moor to the top of Stake pass then along Black crag to Rossett pike it started drizzling now but luckily we were heading back down Rossett gill and Mickleden

We sailed into St Raphael France we just had a walk around town and the mariner then off to Barcelona for a walkup Las ramblas to the city centre and to the Cathedral then just strolled about we had a few beers and something to eat a nice day then it was off to Palma Mallorca for the flight home

Cruise round the central med day 1,2,3 and 4

Flew from Manchester to Crete "Heraklion" to get the ship , next day was at sea all day then first stop was Marmaris Turkey we just had a walk around and a few beers then back to the boat then it was on to the beautiful island of Santorini for a guided tour and a trip to the local winery and on to Fira for the most expencive beers of the holiday £15 for a pint and a half !!!!!

The Dodds

I met up with Lesley at Kirkstone pass then we went on to High row car park above Dockray , we started down the old coach road to Groove beck then went up to Randerside and on to Great Dodd a nice gradual ascent then to Watson's Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd then back round Great Dodd to Calfhow pike where we stopped for lunch now the last one for the day Clough head and dropped down to White stones with great views over Great Mell fell and the old coach road back to High row

Direct ascent of Ill bell

I met with Martin at layby on the A592 at troutbeck we started off through Limefett park and up to Garburn road to Kentmere then walk the beautiful path to the reservoir , this really is a nice quiet remote area of the Lakes . Then came the start of the hard work up Leads how to the summit of Ill bell , this is a steep path were most of the way you make your own path then suddenly you come out right on the summit , now onto Froswick and back down Troutbeck park

I started from Skelwith then past Black crag through Iron keld and past Tarn hows to Hodge close and on to Tilbethwaite and up to Dry cove bottoms now the hard work starts up Steel edge to Wetherlam , a real bitting cold wind blowing winter gear back on now . I went up Prison band to Swirl hows then on to Great carrs and Little carrs and back down to Greenburn down Wet side edge now a nice stroll back round Little Langdale to Skelwith

Middle fell ,Seatallan and Buckbarrow (Stridingedge.net walk)

This was the 2010 Stridingedge.net annual walk we started from Greendale then went up Middle fell then down to Greendale tarn for lunch the cloud was down on Seatallan but as we set of for Seatallan the clouds lifted but no real views from the summit then it was the nice stroll down to Buckbarrow were Joss Naylor was sat on the summit out for a run with his dogs , then back down to Greendale and a pint in the Screes pub

I met up with Beverley today at Cow bridge we set to Deepdale bridge and then along Deepdale to Wall end then up to Lords seat and Gavel pike then up to St Sunday crag for lunch , now the steep climb up to Cofa pike and Fairfield now along the ridge to Hart crag and down Dovedale back to Brothers water and Cow bridge .

Ingleborough

I met up with Martin and Claire at Chapel-le-dale just past the pub we went past the Lime kiln then had a look in Great dock cove where there is a pot hole and a waterfall comming out of the rocks , then we followed the wall up to Green hill and onto Ingleborough summit where it was sunny but very cold then down to Crina bottom where there is a delightfull farm amongst the trees then we followed the path round to White scar and Raven scar then followed Southrscale scar back to the pub where we had a lovely refreshing pint

Pen ,Scafell pike ,Scafell and Slight side

Started the day from Brotherilkeld at 6.45am and walked up the upper Esk to Lincove bridge then on to Great moss and up the very steep path to Pen and up Rough crag to Scafell pike , the wind was incredibly strong I was struggling to stand up , I dropped down to Mickledore and up Lord's rake which was full of snow that I wasnt expecting to encounter but it actually made the ascent easier as I could kick foot holds in the snow , once at the fallen chock stone I set off up the West wall traverse and on to Scafell summit then it was a nice easy walk down to Slight side and back to the car
