Portland_2011

Amy and John were visiting Portland so Theresa and I drove down to join them. We stopped for the nigiht in Olympia Washington on the way down. We've never been there before. We spent a couple of good hours riding around in the morning before continuing to Portland. In Portland we bar-hopped on our bikes which was pretty cool.

Rancho Relaxo 2011

We returned to Rancho Relaxo for another round - this time without the tequila. We had great weather on the Saturday and Sunday, and made full use of the pool. We brought up our bikes again, and did a bikes and wine from Fabbi's mission to St. Hubertus and Cedar Creek in the Okanagan sun.

Spain 2011

Theresa and I went to Spain for 2.5 weeks. We started in Barcelona for 5 days, and then headed to Asturias for some hiking. We had a day in Oviedo before starting our walking trip with my parents, David, and Peter. We had a great week of walking with excellent scenery and dodgy weather. Finally Theresa and I had 2 days in Madrid before coming home.

Dad, Theresa and I went up to Callaghan valley for some x-country skiing. The trails were a lot better than over christmas. Theresa and I rented skate skis again. Theresa struggled at the start, but eventually figured out her butt was in the wrong place! Beautiful day with great views.

We went to visit our friend Sara in Los Cabos. We met Sara in our Spanish class - she's a friend of the teacher and her family rents out an apartment in Los Cabos. We had a relaxing week of beaches, tacos, and tequila...with some spanish lessons as well.

We went back to Whistler for christmas this year. We stayed for 4 nights, and did plenty of cross-country skiing. Theresa and I tried skate skiing for the first time, and enjoyed that...with varying levels of success. Mom and dad also went snowshoeing a couple of times.

kamloops2010

The beavers returned to Kamloops for another shot a glory. A few of us went up early and went for a road ride around town. Scott picked the route, and conveniently turned around just before the road turned to gravel. The scenery was still great, and we had a blast on a big descent into Kamloops. Ride recovery consisted of fish bowl drinks, and some more beverages as the rest of the team arrived. The tournament was a lot of fun, and with help from our recruits from another VUL team and Saturday and Fabbi from Kelowna we managed to win a whopping 2 games!

We went to the slow food cycle around Pemberton this past weekend. We went up on the saturday and stayed at our favourite campground - Strawberry Point. We hadn't been there in about 5 years, so we were pleased to see it was still about the same. More bugs this year than we remember. It was really hot, and we actually spent some time in the lake, which was normally too cold for us. On the sunday we did the ride in ridiculous heat. We met up with Steven, Sharon, Patrick, Stephane and Kelsey for the 50km of cycliing and eating.

Path on the Side of the House

We recently fixed the path on the side of the house. We ordered 1500lbs of flagstone, half of which was for this path. We made good progress and finished it in about 2 days spread over 3 days. That, plus the 5 hours of prep to lay the roadbase and sand.

Trish's Visit

Theresa's Mom came for a visit for a week. We went to Vancouver Island for four days, where we saw Butchart gardens and Victoria, and came back through Chemainus and Duncan. While in Victoria we went whale watching - after 3 hours for speeding around and feeling noxious, we finally saw a dorsal fin...just outside of Victoria!

We installed the gravel, sand and stone for our front walkway. It's taken us six - seven months to get to this point. And the weather still isn't cooperating. Every time we've worked on the path it has rained. But doesn't it look great?!

olympics

For 2 weeks, the world descended upon Vancouver and Whistler for the Winter Olympics. I originally thought it was going to be madness, and wanted to get out of town, but it turned out great, and I'm definitely glad I stayed to be a part of it. We went up to Whistler for the opening weekend, and spent the rest of the time in Vancouver.

Theresa and I took our second adventure into the latin world with a trip for 2 weeks to Cuba. We brought our bikes for our first cycle touring trip, which provided some difficulties but also a lot of great experiences. The hills of pinar del rio were tough with full paniers and no training! We were glad for every word of spanish we knew, and could have done with a lot more. It was definitely interesting to tour around a socialist country and stay in their houses.

Ottawa

I've spent most of the fall in Ottawa doing flight tests for work. This past weekend, Theresa was finally able to join me for a few days. Theresa happened to arrive the day the Olympic Torch was going through Ottawa to Parliament, which was only a few blocks from our hotel. It was cold waiting for the torch to arrive, but neat to be part of the experience. I managed to get a pair of the much-coveted olympic mittens afterward. Good thing, as temperatures went down to below -20C over the next few days. We also visited a couple museums and walked around in the snow for as long as we could stand the cold.

For the first thanksgiving in our new home, Chris' parents came over to celebrate. They brought the turkey, stuffing, sausage meat and bacon. We supplied the potatoes, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, appetizers, dessert and drinks. We went for a 1-hour walk around the neighbourhood. What a day!

Second Honeymoon

For our second honeymoon, Theresa and I went with the English to the Sunshine coast and Strathcona park. We had 3 nights in Lund (very small town north of Powell River) and 3 nights in the Strathcona Park Lodge, 45km from Campbell River. In Lund we took a boat cruise into the not so desolate Desolation Sound, and spent a great day exploring Savary Island. In Strathcona we had two good hikes, and managed to squeeze in some paddling and swimming in the Upper Campbell lake too.

Kettle Valley Trip

For our honeymoon, Theresa and I decided to do a week of riding on the Kettle Valley Railway. The KVR was build between 1910 to 1915. It was an amazing piece of engineering, especially famous for it's trestle bridges in the Myra canyon near Kelowna. The railway was overcome by the highway, and now the railbed is mostly a gravel path that is part of the Trans Canada Trail. Since it was our honeymoon, we signed up with Great Explorations - they supported our ride by moving the gear between campsites and providing all of the meals and 2 guides. The planned ride was from Beaverdell to Coalmont. In total we rode 307 km in the 5 days. Theresa and I struggled a bit on our cyclocross bikes, but still had a good time, thanks largely to the great group we were with.

deck construction

For the first major home project, we decided to work on the deck. The old concrete patio was badly broken up, and needed replacing. The landing and stairs down from the kitchen need replacing more urgently, but we thought the deck might be an easier place to start. Even though we just wanted to make a simple rectangle, it still took a lot of work. Dad and I both took Thursday and Friday off of work, plus the wednesday which was Canada Day. In the end, we put down the last deck board at about 8:30 pm on Sunday!

Our longest ride as part of our training for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. We rode from Fort Langley to Chilliwack and back. It was a hilly 140km - significantly longer and hillier than we had ever ridden before. Our legs (and the rest of our bodies) definitely felt it. The scenery was still great, the weather held, and we even had some ice cream, so all in all not a bad way to spend a sunday. And, as Kalan said, a whole lot better than fighting cancer.

On May 16th, 2009 Theresa and I moved from our Ledgestone Townhouse to our new house on Clinton st, a 20 minute walk away. The main effort started the weekend before, when my parents came over to help take apart the planters I had made on the rooftop deck. As expected, it took a few day to do everything, including bagging up all the dirt and gravel. Not too many people move bags of dirt to a house, but we did! On the day of the move, my parents came again to help, and so did our friends Dave and Cheryl. We thought we had things under control by hiring movers, but it ended up being a full hard day for all of us.

tofino

For Theresa's birthday, I booked a room at the Clayoquot Field Station near Tofino. I had read about it in a magazine as a place where researchers stayed. It was in the Tofino Botanical gardens, but was essentially a hostel. We had the "Teacher's Room", which was quite nice, although the walls were quite thin. They had the shorebird festival, so we went birding at 7am, and again at 4pm. We also went to a slide show by an expert birder. It was cold and wet, but still interesting.

Back to NY for another 2 week trip. This one straddled the Easter weekend, which I wasn't too happy about. Our company keeps a bike at the hotel we stay at, so I managed to get in a couple of rides on the Bethpage Park bike path The path is quite nice through a forest and around a couple of small lakes, and is entirely separated from the road. On the second day, I did the same path, but biked from the hotel instead of driving there, which added about half an hour each way. I also went in to Manhattan on the Saturday. Unfortunately the weather was cold and wet. I went in to the Natural History Museum, which was interesting, but packed with people.

First bike ride of the year for Sharon and Dad. We went over the Lions Gate bridge and into Stanley park. It was a bit cold, but nice and sunny for most of the ride. The dark clouds came in and it actually started snowing right at the end. Fortunately we were inside with our hot chocolate when the heavy snow started falling.

Sechelt_Feb09

We went to visit our friends Brian and Marie in Sechelt for some good times. They met us at the ferry on Friday night at Gibson's, and took us for a good dinner...except Theresa had already gone for dinner. Saturday started with what will forever be known as the epic pancake duel of 2009 between Brian and Marie - i think we all know who won. (One batch was thrown away, another one should have been). With fuel in our bellies we set out to see the Skookumchuck rapids caused by the tide. We drove up to Egmont and hiked in the 4km. Unfortunately it was only a medium tide, which wasn't much to see. The hike was still good, though. At night Brian and I started a fire using tried and true boy scout methods. On Sunday Brian gave Theresa and I a tour of the area in the boat, before our ferry ride home. We're looking forward to going back in the summer, and maybe doing some kayaking and camping in the inlets.

2009_In_Review

2009: a wedding, a new old house, and a lot of bike riding. In January Mark and Frannie met us for a weekend at the Joshua Tree National Park. In February, we visited Brian and Marie in Sechelt for some mature fun. For Theresa's birthday in April, we went to Tofino. In May we moved out of our townhouse to a 59 year old house a couple of blocks away. June brought the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 260km 2 day ride from Vancouver to Seattle. Our team managed to raise over $20k, and we're signed up again for 2010. In July we started our first real project on the house: a new deck and landing. We also had our pre-wedding honeymoon - a week riding along the Kettle Valley railway. We had our wedding in August at the Fish House in Stanley Park, and a BBQ at our house the next day. PalmSprings

Theresa had a Conference in Palm Springs, so I tagged along. The hotel hosting the conference was pretty fancy (valet parking only!) so i tried to take advantage of that. I arrived on Thursday, and went to see The Living Desert. It's basically a zoo dedicated to the flora and fauna of the deserts of the world. They had animals such as Giraffes and Zebras. It also had a 5 mile hiking trail, which I did part of. On the weekend, we stayed in Yucca Valley, right next to the Joshua Tree National Park. Frannie and Mark were able to come up from San Diego to join us for a great hike through the park. We saw a tonne of the Joshua trees, and went through part of the Wonderland

Our friends Amy and John finally got their act together and tied the knot this past weekend. They live in Kansas City, so Theresa and I made the trip out, as did Amy's relatives from Portland, and John's from Phoenix and Kansas state. They had a small ceremony at the court house on Saturday morning. It was funny because you have to go in the back entrance on the weekends, which was not too elegant. Then the guy doing the ceremony was straight out of The Princess Bride, and we all had to concentrate not to laugh (especially after he had said what a solemn event this was). After the ceremony we took a couple pictures, and then went for breakfast. Fortunately the place had a surprisingly large brunch cocktail list (first of the day and badly needed!). In the afternoon we went over to their house for beers, BBQ, and a cake each. My stomache hurt for most of the night. On Sunday we went to the sculpture park, which I really liked. LindsayLake

We returned to the Buntzen Lake area for another hike. We did the Diez Vistas in July, which went along the west side of the lake with views into Indian Arm. This time we did the Lindsay Lake loop, which went along the east side of the lake. It had viewpoints looking South and West, as well as going around quite a few mountain lakes. It was a great day for a hike - sunny and warm, and we had a perfect lunch spot (Barton Park). All the standing water led to a lot of bugs at times, though.

We went back to the lightning lakes campground at Manning Park, this time with our friends and neighbours Pam and Steve. We went up on Friday and got there about 9:30 - just in time to get one of the last spots. On Saturday we hiked the 3 Brothers. The trail head is actually quite high up, so there is little overall elevation gain, but you do have to go down a valley first. There were great views throughout the hike, but just as we were going up the ridge to the peak the clouds rolled in and it was a white out.

SaltspringBikeTour

We decided to make the labour day weekend extra long, and went to Saltspring Island for 5 days with Chris and Monique. We parked our cars at Carolyn and Patrick's in Tsawwassen, and then rode to the ferry - just barely making it. We biked around the many hills on the island, and also spent an afternoon kayaking around Wallace Island. We left our bikes on the beach (a long way from the water at the time), but when we came back the tide had come in, and we couldn't see the beach at all! Fortunately our bikes were about a foot from the water, so everything ended up okay, but we all had visions of having to dive into the ocean to get our bikes up. We stayed at Maple Ridge Cottages on St. Mary's lake, on the north end of the island. It was a bit rustic, but a pretty good spot for Mexican Train Dominoes...which I dominated. Anyway, the weather held (despite a downpour in Vancouver as we were getting ready), and we had a good time with 8 tired legs.

Annual MDA golf tournament. Jose was working(?!) in Hawaii, and Colin was working in Vancouver, so we had to pull in a ringer: Christine's mom Josephine. We actually did really well, finishing 2 under par. I also won the men's closest to the tee (despite the cheating of stewart austin).

West Highland Way

On Sunday, June 15th, 9 of us gathered in Glasgow to embark on the West Highland Way - a 95 mile walk north through the highlands of Scotland. The team was David Eaton, Cliff Eaton, Fei Tan, and the Vancouver Herberts (mom, dad, Steven, Sharon, Theresa and myself). Unfortunately Oli couldn't make it due to a broken leg suffered just before the trip (full of excuses). The trip was really good, despite many pairs of painful feet. The scenery was great for almost the entire week, and everyone got along really well. We used a company called Transcotland to book our rooms and move our luggage each day so that we just needed to carry a day pack. Mom took all forms of transport (train, bus, taxi, ferry) to get between the stages she wasn't walking and David had to leave before the last stage. The rest of us completed the Way. Steven, Sharon, Dad, Cliff and I climbed Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Britain on the 8th day - a tough finish on tired legs.

Ireland

Unfortunately we only had a week for our tour of Ireland. There were some sights I really wanted to see, so that meant a few days of long driving. We started in Dublin. I used my Hilton points for a free stay at the Conrad for two nights. It had a good location right next to St. Stephen's Green, a large park in the heart of the city. We did a tour of Trinity college and a historical walking tour of Dublin. We also met Tessa for a dinner and some bevies. Next stop was Dingle, in the southwest. We rented a car and drove there, stopping at the Rock of Cashel in the Plains of Tipperary along the way. It was a beautiful sunny day as we explored the rock and it's cathedral - a striking site as you approach since it is so much higher than the surrounding land. Next was Dingle Peninsula. We rented bikes and did the 47km loop, which was great. After that we went on to cliffs of Moher, Doolin, Monaghan to visit Theresa's relatives, and finally to Belfast with Tessa.

Patio Furniture

So after reading a review that the patio furniture we were going to get for $400 rusted immediately, we started considering teak stuff. Everything we heard was that it was very durable and really didn't need any maintenance, so we decided to go for it. We ended up buying very similar stuff to my parents from the same shop in West Van. They helped us bring it home, and we had a good BBQ up on the deck to test it out. Since then, it's rained the past couple of days, so we'll get a quick indicator of how it's holding up.

Little Brian is all grown up. He had a party for his 30th, and for St. Patrick's day, so a few extra drinks had to be downed. Marie invited Shawn and I as a surprise - we hadn't seen them for a few years. It's too bad I don't have a picture of his face when he saw us. Anyway, we had a really good time, and didn't lose any teeth.

Santiago

Our final stop on the trip. We took a bus through the Andes to Santiago from Mendoza. On the way, we went past Acongaua, the highest mountain in the Americas. Unfortunately we couldn't figure out how to get on a bus that would stop in the park and let us hike around a bit before moving on, but we did manage to get a picture of the mountain from the moving bus! We also had a ridiculous 3.5 hour delay at the border, even though there really weren't that many people in front of us. We only had 2 days in Santiago, so we basically just walked around the city as much as we could. We went to the pre-Columbian museum, and up Santa Lucia park, and Cerro Cristobal for the views...which showed how much smog there was around.

Mendoza

We had 4 nights in Mendoza, which is the longest of anywhere on the trip. The city has big tall trees lining all the streets and was quite nice. Unfortunately they had gotten as much rain in the previous week as they normally get in a year, so it was a lot wetter than we were expecting! Mendoza is Argentina's wine region, so we went on a bikes and wines tour which was pretty good, although the bikes were terrible. We also went on a rafting trip that was a lot of fun. Other than that, it was the usual exploring and eating. Whenever it wasn't raining there were a lot of people out in the streets and plazas - I think it was our favourite city on the trip.

Payunia

After the lake district, we went north towards Mendoza. After a night in Malargue, we went on to stay at Kine, a eco-turism place on actually inside the reserve. We didn't know what to expect - we thought it would be some sort of small town, but it was actually just a single family home. It was miles from anywhere! On the way in, the road had been washed out and a truck was stuck. It took a couple of hours for them to get through. Since the road went through a dried river bed, we think it must get washed out every time it rains, with is just about every day during the summer. We went horseback riding and had a couple good walks. It was spectacular scenery all around - red rocks, guanacos, volcanos. On the way out, we joined a tour of the volcano circuit. It was hard being squeezed onto a minibus with 15 people after a few days with the whole world to ourselves. The black barren landscapes around the volcanoes were really impressive, though.

Lake District, Argentina

We flew from Buenos Aires to Bariloche, which is the centre of the lake district turism. We did a half day kayak trip on Lago Gutierrez as part of a group, and then a 2 day trip with camping on Lago Mascardi which was just Theresa and I and our guide Joe. After that we took the teleferico up to the top of Cerro Otto, and then did a short hike to some different viewpoints around the mountain. The next stop was Junin de los Andes at the north end of the lake district. We took a bus along the famed Ruta de los siete lagos to get there. Junin is a much quieter town with much less tourism and we both really liked it. Our main purpose in going there was to explore the Lanin national park, so we did a day hike to the base of Volcan Lanin, that had spectacular scenery.

The trip started in Buenos Aires. We used my hilton points to stay at the hilton in the puerto madero area, which is the old port that has been recently revitalized. The hotel was nice, and we made good use of the executive lounge. We explored the neighbourhoods, watched a tango show, and ate! The city was pretty interesting, but not our favourite.

T and I went to Carolyn and Patrick's place in Tsawwassen with Bobbi-jo to celebrate New Year's. We capped another night of gluttony off with watching Dick Clark countdown the year in the big apple. On New Year's day Theresa and I biked around Boundary Bay from their place. We saw plenty of birds and doggies, and managed to get to the polar bear swim in time to see the crazies go into the water. I was really cold on my bike, so going into the water wasn't the first thing on my mind!

Daphne_Adam

After a decade of sin, our friends Adam and Daphne finally decided they liked each other and got married (some people take forever to really commit!). They had the wedding in Kelowna, where they both grew up. Theresa and I decided we would need to take a week off to make the arduous 4 hour drive. We camped for one night in Manning park on the way up, and 2 more nights there on the way back. It was pretty cold (going below 0 at night), but that wasn't enough to discourage two hardy adverturers like us. We had a spectacular hike on Monday - we did the Skyline trail. We hiked for nearly 7 hours without seeing any other people. When we got to the summit with 360 degree views, it felt like we had the entire park to ourselves. In Kelowna we got to meet Adam and Daphne's families. We had a fun morning getting taken around by Daphne's dad, John. He played tour gude and took us to Father Pandosy's mission, and several wineries.

On the Labour Day long weekend, Steven, Sharon, Dad and I went backpacking up to Lake Garibaldi, about 20 km north of Whistler. Thinking that there would be a lot of people going up for the last long weekend of the summer, and seeing that the weather forecast showed Saturday as the only day with sun, we all took Friday off work to go up early. After having to get a new stove because we couldn't get the right gas for our old one, we managed to start our hike around 2:30. We got to the lake roughly 3 hours later, which we thought was quite good time. It was drizzling throughout, but it wasn't too bad in the trees. We found a couple of campsites close together and set up our tents. Steven and Sharon were sleeping under a tarp that they got as a wedding present, which looked a little too hard core for dad and I. Nova_Scotia

After a stint in NY, Theresa met me in Halfax. We met up with her roomate from Ireland, Louise, and had a good time. On Saturday we drove up to Mabou, on Cape Breton Island, stopping at a couple of places along the way. Mabou's claim to fame is that it is the home of the Rankin family. On Sunday we drove around the Cabot trail, which is rated as one of the top drives in the world. We did a hike and got completely soaked - it was like being submerged. On Monday we did a short hike around Mabou, and then drove back to Halifax stopping at Antigonash and getting a hand-made quilt. We flew home on Tuesday after walking around the Citadel hill, the harbour, and the public gardens in Halifax.The scenery was fantastic throughout Nova Scotia, and in Cape Breton Island in particular.
