Gorillas and Gisenyi

Both on traveling eastward for work, Danny and I met up for a weekend in Gisenyi, Rwanda, just across the border from Goma on the shores of Lake Kivu. The highlight was of course trekking to see some of the world's last wild mountain gorillas!

Eastern DRC March 2009

My first trip out to the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. I flew to Goma, cruised by boat down to Bukavu, was picked up and driven in and out of Rwanda, all to arrive at our Africare project site in Uvira, South Kivu. I also went over to Bujumbura, Burundi for the day to pick up our new Project Coordinator. The trip was intense, fascinating, beautiful, and scary. I learned more about DRC in two weeks than I've learned in the last year spent in Kinshasa.

Springtime Spain Visit

Danny and I met my parents and sister, as well as his mom and Rod, for a whirlwind weekend in Madrid. Then we went north to Huesca Province where we rented a car to drive around the Pyrenees and hike in Ordesa National Park. Tapas were eaten, artisanal food was purchased, and much fun was had by all.

Preah Vihear Extravaganza

Five-day trip to remote temples Koh Ker and Preah Vihear, stopping in Anlong Veng and Siem Reap. Danny and I rode motos with four friends accompanying in a landcruiser. We survived shower peepers, (potentially) rabid dogs, and hitting cows.

A long weekend motorcycle trip up Bokor Mountain and subsequent relaxation riverside in Kampot at Les Manguiers. My first intense off-road experience involved a lot of rain, but the rain pants and I persevered.

Chau Doc and Saigon

Phnom Penh to Vietnam via the Mekong delta, we stayed two nights in Chau Doc on the Bassac River. We splurged one night on the splendid Victoria Hotel, oozing with colonial elegance. From Chau Doc we headed on to Ho Chi Minh City where we ate, played darts, ate, went to museums, ate, visited David, and ate.

Chhlong

While working in Stung Treng on the Laos border, I came down for the weekend to meet Danny at the Relais de Chhlong. Chhlong used to be an important colonial Mekong crossing, but today is a sleepy town with some lovely old buildings. One has been restored as an unbelievable boutique hotel along the river. We had our own colonial mansion all to ourselves with a fleet of staff to attend to our every need--it was fantastic.

Kep, revisited on a 250 ccl

My first drive on a 250 ccl motorcyle, to Kep (or Kep-sur-mer as the French and I are fond of calling it) and back. Distance logged: 400 km on and off road, in mud, rain, and shine. Crab was consumed, Dom Perignon drunk, and endless moto glamour shots snapped.

From Shanghai I flew to Guilin in southern China's Guangxi province, which is home to legendary karst scenery and terraced mountains. The scenery was stunning, but it was hard to escape the crowds.

I flew to Xiamen from Guilin to pick up an Air Asia flight to Bangkok. I hadn't planned to stop over here, but was convinced by a SAIS friend who used to teach in Fujian. I'm so glad I did stop as Gulangyu was enchanting, and Xiamen as "authentic" as anywhere I visited in China.

Tibet

I spent a week in Lhasa and five days on the road to and from Everest Base Camp. Travelling in Tibet exceeded my expectations but it was also incredibly sad to witness cultural erosion and the effects of mass Chinese tourism.

16/18 Luce Scholars travelled for eight from the Gobi in the south to Lake Khovsgol in the north in bumpy Russian vans. Back in Ulaanbaatar we had our final wrap-up conference attended the Naadam festival.

The Gibbon Experience, Laos

Bonnie and I travelled to Bokeo Nature Reserve in northern Laos near the Thai and Burmese borders for three days of extreme mud hiking, ziplining, and leech fighting (The Gibbon Experience: www.gibbonx.org). We didn't see the gibbons, but it was amazing nonetheless--by far one of the most amazing travel adventures I've had. And we loved our fun crew of co-gibboneers including three New Zealanders (kiwis for those of you in the know), an Australian, and two Peurto Ricans.

Onward from Laos I travelled overland by sleeper bus (=special place in hell) to Kunming, where flew to Lijiang, to meet up with some other Luce Scholars to hike GORGEous Tiger Leaping Gorge and visit Wenhai ecolodge. We travelled further north to Zhongdian before flying to Lhasa.

A long weekend trip with two friends to Takeo, Kampot, and Kep in southern Cambodia. We spoke lots of Khmer and French, ate lots of seafood and pepper, and rode many kilometers on motos through the countryside.

Battambang

A weekend trip with two friends to Battambang, Cambodia's second-largest "city". We toured the rural countryside by moto, seeing remnants of the Khmer Rouge era, traditional cooking, fruit bats, and even a winery. It was one of the best weekends I've had so far in Cambodia-we HEART Battambang!

Cockfighting in Indonesia

While on lovely Nusa Lembongan, an hour's boat ride off of Bali, I was lucky to catch come local cockfighting. The photos all have a blue hue because the arena was sheltered from the bright midday sun by a big, blue tarp.
