Vall de Lord

Birthday weekend in Vall de Lord, Solsonès! We stayed in a luxurious "casa rural" called Cal Joan del Battle and went for two really good walks. On the Saturday we drove to Coll de la Creu (near La Pedra) and walked around the Roques del Minguell. On the Sunday we drove to Coll de Port and walked more or less along the ridge going eastwards towards Cap del Verd.

Pic de la Serrera

Mountain skiing excursion to Pic de la Serrera, 2913 m, in Andorra, 2012-03-18, with a group from the CEC (Centre Excursionista de Catalunya). The day before we drove from Barcelona to a car park near El Serrat in Andorra and walked about 45 min to the Refugi de Sorteny, 1965 m. We stayed there overnight and set of on the climb to the Pic de la Serrera at 8:00. We reached the peak at 12:20. On the way down we stopped for lunch by a small stone cabin. We were back at the Refugi de Sorteny at about 14:00, and returned to the cars after a short break.

Solsonès

A weekend in Hotel Sant Roc in Solsona—given to me by Josep for my birthday. On Saturday we went walking in the area near Serra Seca. On Sunday we climbed from the Pantà de la Llosa del Cavall (a reservoir in Vall de Lord), following the GR 1 route, passing the old and ruined farm house Casa Llobeta, up to Pla de Busa.

Jardí Botànic & Quatre Columnes

A visit to see the Botanical Garden and the recently reconstructed Four Columns in Montjuïc. The original columns, designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch to invoke the four stripes of the Catalan flag, were constructed as part of the urbanization of the area in 1919. They were demolished in 1928, during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (who presumably were not pleased by the Catalan symbolism), and reconstructed in 2010.

Catalan Sovereignty Demonstration, Barcelona 10 July 2010

Between 1.1 and 1.5 million people (according to police and the organizers, respectively) take to the street in Barcelona to demand recognition for Catalonia's status as a nation with the right to decide for itself on matters of language, law and government. The march had been called to protest against a court ruling that cut these rights, declaring them to be against the Spanish constitution. It became something much bigger, a huge call for Catalan independence.

A walk with Christophe and Louis in the landscape between Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà (i.e., the Upper and Lower Empordà), within view of the Costa Brava, in Catalonia. I haven't been able to find a name that represents this particular area very well. Viladamat, Vilopriu and Garrigoles are the municipalities we walked through.

Refugi de Colomina

A weekend trip to the Pyrenees with Christophe and Lois. On Sat 17 Oct we drove to Espot and took a jeep to the famous lake Estany de Sant Maurici (1910 m). We walked around the lake, climbed (following Riu de Monestero) to the pass Coll de Mar (2753 m), and continued on the other side to the Refugi de Colomina (2395 m). The next day we started going back the same way, and then followed the GR-11 route over the pass Collada de Saburó (2675 m), passing by Estany Negre, to the Refugi Josep Maria Blanc (2350 m). From there we walked down the steep descent back to Espot (1350 m).

Refugi de Certascan

Mountain walk from Tavascan over Coll de Certascan to Refugi de Certascan and back to Tavascan. I went with Christophe and Louis (Josep wasn't able to come). We drove toTavascan on Friday evening and took in to a hotel. On Saturday we walked past the abandoned village of Noarre, up to Coll de Certascan (a pass), and down to the Refugi de Certascan. The walk took about 8 hours (incl. 1-1.5 hours of breaks), and went from an altitude of about 1100 m in Tavascan up to about 2600 m at the pass and down to about 2240 m at the refuge. On Sunday we walked back to Tavascan in about 6 hours (incl. breaks), all downhill.

Lles

A very good cross-country skiing trip to Lles in the Cerdanya (in the Catalan Pyrenees). We ski'ed 10 km in a very nice terrain, consisting of gentle pine forest at about 2000 m of altitude. The weather varied: it was generally cloudy, but at times it was snowing heavily, and at other times it was almost sunny for brief moments.

Nordmarka

Cross-country ski trip from the Voksenkollen station to Kobberhaughytten. The conditions started out as quite bad, with 0C, drizzle and icy tracks, but when I reached Kobberhaughytten (the turning point in both senses) it started to snow, so it was much better going back. The round trip took 4 hours, including lots of photo opportunity stops, and a 15 min lunch break.

Val d'Aran and Portillon de Benasc

This was a fantastic weekend trip to the Pyrenees with Christophe and Louis (who organized everything - thanks a million!). On Saturday we were mostly driving around although we went for a nice walk (1.5 hours) at Montgarri in Val d'Aran. We stayed for the night in a hotel in Bagnères-de-Luchon (in France). On Sunday we went for the more serious walk (7.5h): We started at the car park by l'Hospice de France (on the French side, naturally) and walked up a steep climb to the border crossing Portillon de Benasc (Port de Vénasque in French). Then we walked along below the ridge on the Aragon side and crossed over to Val d'Aran (which is in Catalonia) at Pòrt dera Picada. After that it was mostly a steady descent back into France and back to the car park.

The Lake District

As the summer was coming to an end, Josep and I wanted to take the opportunity to travel and see another part of England—preferably far away from London—while it was still fairly warm in the air. We used to travel more around Britain—to the Peak District, Cornwall and Glasgow, for example—but it was now several years since those trips. We decided to go to the Lake District, and after a little bit of research we chose to go to Grasmere, which is a small village on the road between Windermere and Keswick.
