Pigeon & Sturgeon Rivers - August 2010
August 27 - 28 Pigeon & Sturgeon Rivers in northern lower peninsula of Michigan. Camped at Round Lake Campground in Pigeon River State Forest, on a lovely, small lake with no one else in campground the whole time. Perfect weather - sunny, low 80's, light cool breeze both days, mid-50s at night for good sleeping.
Pigeon: Good current but lots of deadfalls, completely blocked in 2 places by fallen logs. Water levels were low enough that we got stuck on gravel bars and rock gardens in the last three miles. Traffic was low and cottages few. Trip length was 12 miles, in four hours, counting snack stop and time spent trying to get free from rocks, logs, shoals, etc.
Stugeon: Faster current, fewer deadfalls, snags and sweepers. A couple of short sections of Class I whitewater, including a short chute at one of the bridges. More cottages than on the Pigeon and a number of tubing parties, rafts, rental kayaks and one floating inflatable chair. Trip length was 14 miles in 3-1/2 hours.
