Clam transplant in Quonnie Pond, May 2009
Pictures from the May 5, 2009 transplant of 90,000 hard-shell clams from Greenwich Bay to Quonochontaug Pond. The clams were put into an area closed to shellfishing, so they can spawn and feed. No wonder they are happy. Clams are great little filters and help clean the water as the feed. The Tuesday of the transplant, started with a NE storm which brought heavy rain and strong winds for the diggers to contend with. By early afternoon when the Quonnie Pond portion commenced, the rain had stopped, but it was still windy and cold for May.
