The boys still smiling.. You can still see the road in the background. Im guessing we've climbed close to 1000 ft at this point. As you can see its getting dark quickly, but our plan was to get up to Meysan lake by nightfall.
This is the start of our journey. We landed in Vegas and started driving towards Inyo National Forest (Lone Pine essentially) through Death Valley. They aren't screwing around , the names are very informative. It felt like a stovepipe outside.
Crazy person running in 130+ heat in DeathValley.
Ok fourteen thousand five hundred feet to go!
We start the hike at around 4.30pm if memory serves me correctly. That tiny road is the road that leads from Lone Pine into Inyo National forest. I think we started our hike around 7900 ft, so we're just a bit away from the trailhead at this point.
The view up the way from our campsite. (first night)
Alex and Jeff boldly slept outside the tent, Moloney and I were scared of the mosquitos.. no reason to tempt fate we said.
ROWRRRR!!!!
You can even still see the moon, this is hiking away from the lake we camped next to up to Mt LeConte/Mt Mallory
The lake we camped next to
The scree filled slopes
Meysan lake, very very beautiful
It looks small, but that's 2000 ft elevation climb spread over 1 mile of distance. so yes, close to 40% grade!
A bit of the way up the scree slopes,, a look back
Meysan lake, taken from the scree slopes
Moloney trudging ahead boldly
A very tired Jeff, relaxing after our failed attempt up the scree filled slopes..
Morcos wiped out..
Yes we were up there between those two patches of snow, to give u perspective, that snow is maybe 200 ft in length..
It looks like its straight up in the picture, and it more or less is when u're up there also
Sun going down, starting to get cold, kinda looks like a scene from Star Wars
In the morning, hiking away from Meysan lake down to the trailhead
On final look at what we attempted
Our knees were killng us by then, this is on our final descent
a VERY welcome beer.
BLM lands,, apparently lots of movies were shot here back in the day.
Didn't summit, but we're still alive..
Anne's mother there in the corner
My arch nemesis, the rattlesnake.. this pretty much killed any idea of us sleeping outdoors
Morning, its already really hot, not even 8am at this point
They dont fool around with the names in DeathValley
off the hood of the car, not really many other souls in sight in DeathValley
Yes, morcos wizzing in the background
Its quite a long wizz apparently
