Chief Joe - Beartooth Pass

While on one of our visits to Cody, Linda picked up a brochure on scenic drives, I don't know how things could get more scenic but shows what I know. The Chief Joseph Byway & the Beartooth Highway were two of the most scenic drives rated by Charles Kuralt, and rightly so. They go through through Gods Country. If there's people livin' up here you don't see em. We rose to over 11,000 ft. in country so beautiful, I started to hear Julie Andrews singin' in my head. These hills were alive, or at least made you feel so.

Grand Teton National Park

We sped through this park on our way north to Alaska so we had to see it on the way back. The Rockies are grand in their splendor here, no foothills so you can really view their jagged peaks. We stayed in a camp, but I can't recollect the name. There was Buffalo everywhere in the valleys and we had to keep an eye peeled lest they sneak up on you. Visited a Church, early Trading Post & Ferry Crossin' & took a boat ride on Jenny Lake to hike to Hidden Falls. The Tetons were supposedly named so by french trappers and translates to 'large teat'.

Yellowstone National Park

We arrived at Yellowstone through the West Yellowstone entrance. From here we ventured south to Norris Campground for a few days, Then we moved to four or five other campgrounds during our stay. We even ventured out to Cody and back to the park to do some more site seeing. We definitely covered a lot of ground, but there is so much to see, we'll come back again one day. The most awe inspiring thing for us was to think we were in this 50 foot wide volcano caldera, viewing all sorts of different geo-thermal features. there is so much to see, between the diverse scenery, animals( it's like a living zoo) & the vast assortment of geo-thermal features, it's a wonderful destination. Even after the drive to Alaska this park was AWESOME!!!!!!!

Garnet Ghost Town

Came upon a sign for Garnet, a ghost town in MT, so we had to explore. Garnet is about 10 miles off the highway traveling a bad, narrow dirt road through the mountains. It was so going with our home on our back. When we finally reached the parking lot, we still had quite a hike to reach the town. It was really hot but it was still it was worth it. Garner was a gold mine until 1954 and had poured out $10,000,000 in gold. There are still descendants of the original settlers living here.

Glacier Park

We finally made it back to Glacier National Park after zippin by it on our way north to Alaska. It is definitely some 'High... country. We stayed in two Campgrounds, Sprague, a wooded camp & Rising Sun, a more prairie type camp. We stayed her for 3 or 4 days which was enough for an initial visit, but we'll go back some day.

Idaho

We left Britsh Columbia and entered the US into Idaho. My Best friend from High School lives here, that I haven't seen in 30 sumtin' years. We decided to drop in on him and his wife. We stayed for a few days and had a great time reminicin', laughin' and just plain ole visitin'. When we left Mark & Joann we headed fer the 'Big Cedars', now Linda is kinda a tree hugger but Wow I've never seen trees this big, they were beautiful. Then we passed this sign for Kootenai Falls and just had to stop, we were not disappointed.

Carcross, YT

Leaving Skagway we ventured back to the Alaska Highway and started headin' to Stewart, BC & Hyder, AK. We stopped for the night at 'Mukluk Annies Salmon Bake', they offer campsites for free and pay sites with electric. We opted for the free which happen to be on the lake shore. We decided to try trhe Salmon Bake, we don''t like salmon but they had other choices. We parked next to some guys on there way to AK in two lance campers, and had dinner with them. The next day it was on to Carcross, Yukon and beyond. Carcross is a town of 466 people and there's not too much to see.

Skagway

We arrived in Skagway by water as we took the ferry from Haines, AK. The route by land was 700 miles but by water 15 miles & less than an hour. Although we were pooped when we arrived cause our ferry left Haines at 2:35 AM. We rolled into Skagway and found quite a large, quaint town. Heading for Dyea to the National Park we found a campsite along a beautiful creek. The following morning we got a spot in the NP campground. Seems back in 1896 Skagway and Dyea were competing to become 'The Town' at the head of the Klondike Gold Rush trail. Dyea was where the trail began but Skagway had the deep water port so even though Dyea had a head start on development Skagway won out. We stayed in the park for three or four days while we explored the area. We took several Ranger lead walks, learning much about the history and even attended a play highlighting local history. Before we left we spent a night camped outside the local cemetery hoping to encounter some more history.

Haines

Haines was a beautiful city located on Portage Sound at the Chilkoot Inlet surrounded by lush green, majestic mountains. We stayed several days checking out the sites before we moved on to Skagway. We found the flowers here to be the most beautiful and the 21+ hours of daylight doesn't hurt. Haines is the home to Fort William H. Seward first army post in the region in 1904 and decommissioned in 1946.

Exit Glacier

We camped just outside Exit Glacier Natl. Park for 5 days waiting for the weather to improve to take a cruise to Kenai Fjiords Natl. Park. We would have stayed inside the park but the campground was all walk in sites for tenters. Since I didn't get to walk on the glacier in Banff/Jasper Natl. Park, it was unreal to expierence Exit glacier out my window every night and morn'. This was one of the most beautiful glaciers we were to see, up close and personal.

Seward

We stayed just outside of Seward for 5 days waiting for the weather to clear so we could take a crusin' tour of Kenai Fijords Natl. Park. Every night we stayed just outside Exit Glacier Natl. Park and had the glacier at our feet when we arose each day, it don't get any better than this.

Homer

We took a day trip to Homer from our camp in Ninilchik. It is noted as a prime fishing port for salmon & halibut and many charters go out each day. The 'Spit' as it's called held no alure for us as it does for many others. The camping ranged from too expensive for a spot with no hookups on the beach, to outrageous for a full hookup, barren site for $75 a night. We had lunch at a Chinese resturant, you see in Alaska resturaunts are few and most are multi ethnical, ie; Greek, Italian & Chinese all in one resturaunt. How can they make all that food good?

Ninilchik

Quaint little Russian fishing village established 1846, still a working fishing village. On the way here we passed the intersection of the Russian River and the Kenai River, the best salmon fish‌ing in the world. When the fish are ru‌nning the fisherman are elbow to elbow, with bears mixed in, they call this 'Combat Fishing'.

Turnagain Arm

Turnagain Arm is a part of the Cook Inlet streching from Anchoage to Portage. One can expierence the 'Boar Tide', an extremely high and fast tide, inquire locally. If a Boar Tide is occurring you'll see the surfers riding the wave.

Portage Glacier

We took a little cruise on Portage Lake to see the glacier. Linda had read that we could sail for half price if we took the last trip of the day, so 'Two fer One' was great. Our captain was very knowledgable, and he said he's only made this trip about 7000 times. All in all he was a card and he and I got along great, tellin' jokes to each other as we cruised. When we were driftin' in front the glacier, we had missed capturing the glacier "calving" more than once, when my dear wife hands me the video cam. Well the next calving I'm watchin' in awe, all the while holdin' the camera at my side, OOPs. The glacier rises more than 400' and extends more than 300' below water.

Aliaseka

We visited Aliaseka Resort off Turnagain Arm the same day as Portage Glacier. The resort hopes to host the winter olympics some year, they only average 750" of snow annually, but have been known to recieve 1000" in winter. Thats only a little over 83' of snow, glad I don't have to shovel that! We rode to the top of the tram lift to get a good perspective.

Independence Gold Mine

We stayed in a Passport America park in Palmer, The Homestead RV Park. It sure was good to take a real shower after all the 'Navy Showers' we'd been takin'. A gem of a park, Linda couldn't find any dirt or dust in the bathhouse, now that's sayin' somethin'! One of our side trips, after some Yard Sales, was Independence Gold Mine State Historical Park. Yeah thats right 5000 miles to go to Yard Sales. Goin' up the road to Independence Mine, the creek was open to recreational gold panning for miles. Would have been nice to pan some out fer us. The mine was in operation until the government halted all gold minin' during WWII. It opened again after the war until some time in the fifties, when it wasn't ecconomically feasable to continue. To bad they can't start back up with gold @ $900 an ounce.

Denali

We arrived to Denali on a sunny day only to have the weather turn cloudy, Oh no, No Mt McKinley. Four days later we leave to find some moose blocking the way out of the campground, just sit and wait till there done browsin'. After leaving we headed south and saw the 'Mountain' from Hwy #3. Then we went out Petersville Rd. and saw it from 500' elevation perspective, "AWE INSPIRING". That's where we saw 'Bucky'. When I was a kid there was a beaver on TV selling Ipana toothpaste named Bucky. It was funny cause I told everyone that asked that we were not taking a schoolbus tour, for miles on the gravel road in the park, cause we've seen all the critters that live out ther on our way up to Alaska except the small ones like beaver and badger. Then Lo and behold 'Bucky" comes swimmin' out to see us, Shinin' times.

It was cool and rainy while we were in this area. The weather acctually deteriorated into the first night. I had planned to visit Athabasca Glacier but the weather was to bad to hike up in the rain, maybe some other day, some other time.

Green River, Wyoming

We boondocked in a BLM campground on the Green River, site of many a summer 'Trappers Rendezvous'. There was one for $10 with no hookups and vault toilets, we stayed accross the road right o the river, in primitive with 12 sites, for $0.

Queen Mine - Bisbee,Arizona

The Queen Mine was on our to do list and we enjoyed the mine tour. Just cause somethin's on our to do list doesn't mean we're definitely goin' thru with it. Sometimes we get somewhere and the expectation and granduer just fizzle. If it don't hit us right we pass on it. We liked the tour cause we had to get suited up with miners gear and ride down into the mine on one 'a' them little mine trains. The tour was very good and covered lots of areas. Worth the trip.

Durango Silverton Railroad

After dining at the Bar 'D' Ranch we decided to take the rail trip to Silverton. Ya see the same family owns the Smoky Mountain Railroad at our Smoky Mtn. retreat. The ride up the gorge along the Anamis River is breathtakin'. As you climb the river gets wilder an wilder, so much so they only whitewater from the half way point down. The little burg of Silverton has one paved street and the school system boasted 53 children. Asked a fella if it made it hard to get a Prom date, less your takin your sister or cousin. He said, "Some years we don't even have a graduating class. The trip was well worth the time and money and we would do it again, but we might drive up from Durango just so's we could stay longer than the 2 or 3 hour layover on the train.

Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde is by far the largest concentration of cliff and surface dwelling Anazai ruins in the southwest. This was a stop on our 'To Do' list that turned into somewhat of a fizzle. We planned to stay in the area and visit the park for several days, but decided one day was enough. I think part of it was due to the bleak surroundings from several large fires in the recent past and just maybe we had seen our fill of cliff dwellings. Don't get me wrong the dwellings are remarkable but something just didn't click for us. We took a self guided tour of Springhouse Lodge, a ranger guided tour of Balcony House and toured several other sites on our own. We stayed in a USFS camp outside Durango, first one we ever visited with electric, 50 AMP at that.

Mammoth Creek

We spent about 10 days camped in the Dixie Natl. Forest. Used it as our basecamp for exploring Cedar Breaks, Red Canyon, Bryce & Grand Staircase Escalante

Red Canyon

This is an area 9 miles east of Bryce Canyon N.P.in the Dixie National Forest. It is operated by the U.S.Forest Service and it is a must see. There were no fees to drive through on the Highway or stop and hike or view the formations. The red rocks and hoodoos line the highway unlike Cedar Breaks & Bryce where they are down in a ampitheater. The forest service operates a 35 site campground with toilets & showers but no hookups,sites are $11 a day.

Bryce Canyon

This Bryce Canyon N.P. The senic drive is 18 miles and it was recomended to us to go all the way out and then stop at the overlooks on the return trip cause their all on the right side of the road, no need to fight cross traffic. I also prefered this because the scenery got more and more spectacular as you came back towards the Visitors Center. The day we were here the wind was blowing 70-80 mph at the far end. You had to be careful and it was tough taking pictures and trying to stand up without holding onto something. But it was magnificent all the same and we take what hand is dealt when we are in 'Mother Natures" house.

Cedar Breaks National Monument

Cedar Breaks was something we saw on the map nad decides to go see for ourselves. Boy were we glad. WE stopped at the ranger station in cedar city to inquire about it and were told the road was just plowed and opened today. So the next morning we headed out. It was absolutely breathtakin' and we sure didn't have to worry about crowds. The Visitors Center or campground wasn't open yet but we liked the area so much we found us a 'Boondockin' spot and settled in fer 10 days or so. Duck Creek in Dixie Natl. Forest was our base for this leg of our visit at over 10,000 ft. On Memorial Day it snowed on and off throughout the afternoon. It was great after the 115 degree heat in Las Vegas & southern Utah. One of our favorite places to camp in the US.

Mt. Charleston

We heard of a ski resort 30 minutes outside Vegas and had to check it out. We figured it had to be cooler than the city and we were right. There was still snow on the ground that we played in. We could have all stayed here longer.

We took a trip to Valley of Fire to escape the city for the day. After hangin' around the park for a while stoppin' and snappin pictures, Jason says "How many red rocks can you look at?" It was nice butb it was just as hot as town.

Las Vegas

We decide to swing into Las Vegas for a day or two to see what it was like since we were so close. Normally we wouldn't seek out a large city to hang out, too many people. But our son flew out to join us and we wound up staying for 12 days. On the day we picked him up at the airport the temp shot to 105 and remained there throughout our stay.

Oatman, Arizona

We had read about Oatman and the burro's so we decided to check it out. The burro's rule the town, almost, and are a site to see. Oatman is an old gold mining town and route 66 goes right thru it. The burros, desendants of the miners burros, roam the streets during the day, begging for handouts. All the stores sell treats for them at reasonable prices.

Flaggstaff, Sunset Crater

After camping in a NFS campground near Grand Canyon, we decided to try our hand at 'Boondockin'. We found an area in the NF near Sunset Crater Natl. Mon. used for 4 wheelin'. We stayed for about 4 days while we unwound from the Grand Canyon and it's tens of thousands of tourists. We had such a great expierence that from that point on we're lookin' for nothin' but Boondockin' spots.

Grand Canyon - South Rim

I have been to the canyon before but Linda had not. We enjoyed it so much, we stayed 5 or 6 days. It is overwelming in it's vastness and one gets complacent toward the scenery after so much viewing. I took probably 300 pictures, but they start lookin' the same after a while. This is just a small sampling of our visit. We are definitely coming back in the future to visit the North Rim.

Tuzigoo Monument

Tuzigoot is a cluster of buildings on top of a small ridge close to the Verde River valley where the remains of dwellings of the 12th century Sinagua Indians are preserved. At one time the settlement was home to around 150 people and had up to 80 rooms, some with 2 storys.

Suagro National Park

We expected to find the desert in full bloom, which would have bolstered Linda's spirits regarding the desolation. Unfortunately they were in the midst of a drought and the blooms were few and far between.

Tombstone, Arizona

We had never been to Tombstone before and I wanted to go to satisfy the 'Cowboy' in me. The town has been preserved as it was in it's heyday. All the local hangouts still operatin', Boot Hill, Big Nose Kates Saloon, the newspaper and lots & lots more. Yee Ha!!!

Chiracoa Monument - Arizona

This was a unique trip for us as we left our RV park in Bowie,Arizona, to go to the Chiracoa National Mounument. We drove down a paved road for about 12 mile, then it turned to dirt in the middle of the desert. Had me worried a little as we drove the remaining 10 or so miles and hooked back up with the highway again. We're used to travelin' off the beaten path but the maps we had didn't show these roads. We made it to the monument and it was well worth it. Kept expectin' Cochise and his band of Apaches come ridin' down or commence to shootin' from behind them rocks. Got an imagination don't I ? Guess that's the boy in me.

Gila Cliff Dwelling National Mon., New Mexico

We had read a lot on Gila Cliff Dwellings and were not disappointed. The monument is a wander through, go at your own pace site. It was terrific. Half way through a volunteer showed up and she was quite informative. I asked about some small corn cobs I had noticed in one of the rooms and found they have been laying there for over 700 years, they don't hardly deteriorate. The ruins stay at just the right temperature & humidity.
