boat hallways
A view of Magaret Island park, as seen from the deck of our boatel
I pose next to the boatel
My room, the John Cabot room
My room, post suitcase explosion...note Buster on my bed
my tv
my bathroom, toilet, and sink
Mike fixes the computer but recieves an interesting tattoo in the process
a view of a typical Romanesque Pest house...with a central courtyard...this was the start of our whirlwind city tour and the center part of the IIE offices
a typical hungarian courtyard
The ceiling flowers in the building that houses IIE
Hungarian engineering? - a park just outside the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
Hungarian Academy of Sciences
a view of a cathedral in Buda
Phil's head...along with a beautiful example of early 1900 architecture
another view of the architecture
a glimpse of St. Stephen's Cathedral from the roadway
a road worker posed for this photo...Budapest is a city of renovations as the city tries to regain its former glory....these workers are trying to turn a driving street into a pedestrian only street
St. Stephen's Cathedral up close
St. Stephen's Cathedral with a park in the foreground
the lovely sculpture's on the building
and a recreation of the all the disciples...I'm sure they looked just like that
the beatiful cross on the cupola...our guide said that we could walk up there if we liked
a pretty fountain next to a former bus station
An example of a typical shop in early budapest...the tables were used to measure fabric over one hundred years ago...now its a high end clothing retailer
the ceiling of this shop
The building facade is entirely marble....its kinda ugly in my opinion but I like it
gazing up the side of a church somewhere in Budapest
gazing into the gilded doors of the church
peering into the church
Interior of a church in Budpest
A jewish synagogue in Budapest...the biggest synagoue outside of israel and new york
Jewish Synagogue...looks kinda mosque-like...it looks that way because the Jewish leaders didn't want iconography...just like muslims use abstract geometry instead of symbols
Ten commandments on top of Jewish Mosque
Holocaust memorial, it makes me feel sad
From the Jewish Quarter to a beer garden next door
A movie screen at a popular beer garden...this placewas a building slated to be torn down...but it turned into such a cool beer garden that the authorities left the building so the beer garden could stay. We visited this garden on the last night of our stay in Budapest and we all agreed the the atmosphere (with chairs hanging off the wall and a large mish-mash of cultures) was superb
looking towards the inside
and gazing at the plants in the ceiling
a museum I want to visit someday...found in the Jewish Quarter
The museum has a collection of neon signs...apparantly communist Hungary used neon signs to advertise...“bread” and “shoes”...similar to US ads but without the random glitz
The entrance to the strict Jewish synagogoue
Gazing at the design of strict Jewish sect synagogue
doors leading to an entire Jewish community, the strict Jews have their own little village behind these doors
An excellent of more recent Hungarian architecture...its not as pretty
but the streetlamps are still pretty
Entering the region close to the river...I snap a picture of the statue you can see all over Budapest...but I don't remember what this was
We then visited the Universitat Budapestinenis in Buda....where we visited a lot of chemistry labs
The main entrance to the chemistry building had a large globe
Eric (one of the scholars) ponders the globe, or supports it with his brain, I think we're supposed to learn how to do this during the fellowship, no small task
The main entrance also had a display of chemistry apparatice...I think this means florence flask in Hungarian?
Hungarian chemistry books
and saw the first Hungarian partical accelorator
accelerate me....
looking up through the skylight....as a storm approaches
looking athe quad...its not quite as cheey as the one in Urbana
but the hallways in the chemistry building are about as exciting as the hallways in CLSL
The chemistry building even had its own version of the roach coach...I was running to catch the tram so the image is blurry
On Tuesday night we visited the Hungarian Opera House to listen to the Hungarian Philharmonic, this was truly a highlight of the trip
Isn't this opera house amazing!
the top of the opera house, this was one of my favorite nights
looking over the stage....isn't that Box 5?
The opera!
The symphony warms up
Gazing into the boxes
Discussing the amazing symphony during intermission
then wandering out onto the balcony for drinks
walking up these amazing stairs
a close up of the amazing guilded opera house...now take this image and multiply it by 300 and you get the idea of the glitz and glamour of this place
a close of view of the boxes
I pose next to the stage that produced amazing sounds tonight
without flash
another type of box seat
gazing at the interior again
and admiring the chandeliers...every inch of this place was amazing
and guilded
lights at the opera
the ceiling of the opera house
steps of the opera house
chandelier of the opera house
leaving the opera house was even a wonderful experience...some of these pictures are blurry because the attendents tried to confiscate our cameras
The next day we explored Budapest somemore...here is a picture of some of us on the escalator...but its pretty blurry
the escalator moved really fast too...so fast that I didn't have time to snap a picture one I got off
the crazy escalator stairs in the train station, they move really fast and make you feel sideways
a crowded night bus, after seeing this bus, we decided to walk
Walkind up to the thermal baths in Pest
Inside the Turkish Baths
The Turkish baths (we couldn't take pictures inside)
I love how every dine's outside in the nice weather
A view of the chain bridge
Gazing at a lovely state building in Buda
After 5 days together, you can get a little annoyed with each other....Bettina and Mike throw punches while John grabs their heads
Parliament as seen from the dinner cruise boat
parliament again? or another lovely building in Buda...I'm not sure
A sunset over the Buda hill
Sunset reflects in water
Sunset over the Buda buildings
take 2
I really like sunsets...can't you tell?
John snaps a picture...the boat ride was rather windy so my hair is blowing everywhere
Charity on a Boat overlooking the Hungarian parliament building
Now a picture looking at Budapest
Mike (fellow scholar), Chris (program director, fluent in a lot of languages), and Eric enjoy a beer on the deck of the boat
John and Eric pose next to a Buda building
then gaze into the distance
John proclaims the wonder of Budapest
And then snaps another picture of me overlooking the river
And I take a picture of the city at night. The building in the center is the Gelert hotel, famous for its thermal spas. What a way to remember an amazing town
