It took an hour and a half to get to but it was a damn nice display. Everyone could see, there werent tooo many people, and they giant flamethrowers and laser beams with rock music choreography. Beats Adelaide skyhow no problems, but I'd prefer me a decent sunset anyday.

20080705 Jim Thompsons House
10 mins walk from MBK is the urban jungle oasis of Jim Thompsons House. He was an American who restored the Thai silk industry to eminence after WW2. He was an avid art collector and designed and built a teak house i nthe Thai style. He went missing in Malaysia in 1969 (I think). It was a pretty cool place with heaps of artifacts and priceless pieces of art on display. We we not allowed to photograph anything inside the house.

20080510 Ride to Nihonkai
After the camping trip I had one night at home before heading off on a equipment test ride for 3 days to the Sea of Japan and back. It was supposed to be for about 4 days but i got tired of trying to find a sneaky place to put the tent up after dark. I went to an awesome onsen/sento called OYuLando in Kaike onsen town on the north coast. Worth every sen of the 350yen entrance ($3.50). I did about 339kms in three days (159kms on the friday alone). My bottom hurt for a week after that!

A rather large mass of Gaijin went to Shikoku for Golden week. It was awesome! We ended up staying 3 nights in Ikumi beach, a nice surf beach. Happy times!

20080328 Its a Surly
I bought my touring bike last week (28/03/08) from Farm Bike in Kurashiki. Its a Surly "Long Haul Trucker". All CroMoly frame and forks with lots of braze-ons for mudguards, racks, different brake configurations etc. I changed out the drop bars and bar end shifters for a touring bar with lots of different grip positions. I ordered the largest one that the distributor had (58cm) frame. Thankfully, it seems to fit very comfortably, so far. (crosses fingers)

20080211 Okunoshima (bunny island)
Its all cutsey now, with 100's of cute bunnies running around, but the island has its dark history. Before and during WW2 the island had been taken off the official navigational charts because it was the site of Japans chemical warfare development. They developed mustard gas for use against the Chinese on the mainland...

Terry and I went to Fukuyama for lunch and to wander around. I had the best pasta Ive had in a long time, and got an average espresso, (meaing the best one Ive had in Japan) to boot. However the biggest shock was the gothic inspired wedding reception hall we found. I was flabbergasted...

Kobe Long Weekend Oct 6-8
I went up to visit George and Mari who live in Sannomiya, old friends I knew in Japan previously. I also bought a new lens for my camera (Nikkor AF-S DX VR 18-200mm 3.5-5.6G IF-ED). The lens wasn't cheap at all (ahem), but these first pictures show the great potential. It is the ultimate walk around lens. I had so much great food there. I had Indian for lunch, drank Germany's best wheat beer off the tap, ate dinner in a REAL Thai restaurant (OMG it was good!), as well as my fav old Thai/Viet fusion restaurant in my old home town. We topped it off with a visit to a cool sushi place for monday's lunch. What a weekend! Thanks George!

Onomichi
I had a day off due to sports day recently, so I decided to head down to Onomichi, west of Fukuyama. There is a temple walk with about 42 different temples. Actually they are all very close to the station, and are easily reachable. I wandered around for a few hours, had lunch at the No.1 Miso ramen shop in Onomichi followed by some green tea icecream at the No.1 ice cream shop, followed by another wander up to a 3 tiered pagoda and back again. A nice day...

Fuji Trip 2007
We bussed to Yamanashi friday night, and got to a hostel saturday afternoon. After a few hours sleep we got up at 2 am sunday morning and arrived at station 5 for the climb at 4:55. It took 4:40 for me to reach the top and 2:10 to get down. After a short wait we went to a sento (public bath) and rode the coach home to Okayama city. I caught the train back home at 5:21am. I got sunburnt fairly well resting up at the caldera, some incredible muscle soreness and poked both big toes through my socks, but what an experience. Having climbed the highest mountin in Japan, I have decided to retire from climbing any more moutains.:)

2 days after I got to Kamogata I was brought along by Mario, my peruvian neighbour to a festival, in which I was to be performing. After a few beers and being dressed in a yukata by an ancient smiling woman, and greased with a few more free Asahi's we hit the street. Our group won "The unique award". Wasn't that polite ;)
