Field in Slinfold Parish

It is thought that in 1321 there was a mill in this field worth 13 shillings and 4 pence per annum; HDAG spent 5 days conducting a geophysical survey over the entire field in an attempt to locate any evidence of a mill and its associated mill-race, leats, etc.

Site near Pulborough

Early Bronze Age site at an undisclosed location near Pulborough. HDAG assisted Worthing Archaeological Society undertake an assessment and Fieldwalk of the site, and perform a resistivity survey on their behalf in oe part of the site.

HDAG invited the Surrey Roman Studies Group to conduct a magnetometry survey on an ancient Roman site near Slinfold.

Ancient woodland, Slinfold

Guided field tour of some ancient woodland off the Downs Link, Slinfold, looking at old estate boundaries, remnants of Park Pales, freeboards to a Medieval Manorial estate park, and disused roads. Evidence of ancient coppicing and other woodland husbandry also examined.

Some are reasonably accurate, some not so, and some rather apocryphal, jejune, and ungrammatical in style. Time Team's Taxman's Tavern, Day 3 of 3

Day 3 and the heavens opened up. It came down stair-rods and all trenches began to rapidly fill up with water. Many took refuge under a large tree, and other stalwarts continued excavating under tents. Later it brightened up, and students from Christ's Hospital came over to assist. The afternoon was a Public open-day and people came from far and wide to observe proceedings.

Time Team's Taxman's Tavern Day 2 of 3

6 evaluation trenches excavated. Trench 1 aligned N-S was positioned to investigate one of Winbolt’s 1920s excavation trenches within the northern wing of the mansio. Trench 2, aligned N-S. was positioned alongside the A29 to investigate the southern E-W aligned earthwork which formed the boundary of the staging post. Trench 3 was positioned to investigate geophysical anomalies in an area outside the main staging post and mansio enclosure, in an attempt to identify structures associated with the strip development along Stane Street. Trench 4 was aligned NW/SE to attempt identification of structures associated with the eastern range of the mansio building, and locate a structure interpreted by Winbolt as an intravallum road. Trench 5 was aligned E-W raegeting upon a large geophysical anomaly and possible structures associated with the strip settlement along Stane Street. Trench 6 was targeted on a geophysical anomaly and the structures of the western wing of the mansio.

Time Team's Taxman's Tavern Day 1 of 3

Time Team were invited to dig at an 8 hectare Romano-British settlement site with Mansio and enclosure, in Slinfold, and since I had been fieldwalking the site for several years previously, I was invited onto the dig for the 3 days, although I did not personally get to excavate. I shot several cameos about the settlement, but they were not screened as TT concentrated their efforts on the main Scheduled Monument and only conducted geophysical surveys on the areas of settlement.

Between May and July 2005 we spent the whole Summer chasing shadows in a field near Billingshurst. However, excellent training vehicle teaching University students the art of geophysics.
