The owl is the symbol of the Sow tribe (don't quote that spelling). They settled around the Sun Moon lake. There are only about 300 of them left, I was told.

Our bed the first night in a Japanese-style lodge built in the 1920s when Taiwan was a Japanese colony.
Apparently they couldn't shell for real pillow covers, even though this lodge had a sweet-ass Karaoke system. It's all abour priorities, right?
Our "beds" the second night. Japanese-style tatami mats. They may as well not have bothered. It was about like sleeping on a really hard floor.
