Bridge across the Yukon River on Dalton Highway, Alaska. If I remember correctly, building this bridge cost about 1/3 of the entire Dalton Highway from Prudhoe Bay to near Fairbanks built in 1974 to construct and maintain the Alaska oil pipeline.
Crossing another large river in Alaska, the Tanana between Fairbanks and Tok.
Crossing a river rich in spring-time sediment in Yukon in the area of the Kluane National Park
Nitsulin Bay Bridge in Teslin (near Whitehorse), Yukon. This is the longest bridge on the entire Alaska Highway.
Astoria Megler Bridge across the mighty Columbia River, spanning from Washington (North) to Astoria in Oregon (South). At 6500+ m it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astoria%E2%80%93Megler_Bridge
New bridge along Redwood Highway 101 near Leggett, California.
Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco. The single best known landmark of my entire trip. While riding up to this viewpoint was a detour requiring considerable effort with the fully loaded bike, this view was worth it.
Modern Bridge on highway between Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico. This bridge South of Tehuacan spans a gorge of a small river marking the boundary between the Puebla and Oaxaca districts. Right after this bridge a long and very hot climb of more than 1000m vertical waited for me...
Puente de las Americas across the Panama Canal just West of Panama City. Reaching and crossing this bridge was a momentous occasion for me as it marked the end of the first half of my ride (North- and Central-America). See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_of_the_Americas
Former railroad bridge seen from road bridge across the Rio Grande just outside the town with the same name in Southern Argentina. This was at the end of Day 2 riding North from Ushuaia.
Pre-Sunrise start in Las Horquetas, starting the day by rolling across the small Rio Coyle. While this place was nothing more than one hotel / restaurant / campground, it was the only such place between Rio Gallegos and La Esperanza for about 100 miles. In this area I had some of the worst headwind, usually kicking in around noon.
First (or last) bridge on Highway 23 between Lago del Desierto and El Chalten. Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy are nearby, but I only saw Fitzroy briefly due to the cloud cover.
Probably the worst bridge of my entire trip I crossed in stages carrying the fully loaded bike: This is on the trail between El Chalten and Villa O'Higgins over a small pass marking the Argentina - Chile border.
Bridge just South of Villa O'Higgins, the Southern terminus of the (in)famous Carreterra Austral in Chile. Except for the tarmac on the bridge(s) there were 1000+ km of gravel road ahead!
Small bridge between Coihaique and Villa Manihuales on the Carreterra Austral in Chile. This was at the beginning of a 6 day streak of near nonstop rain, the worst cycling weather on my entire trip.
Puente Senador Sergio Sepulveda across the Rio Rosselot between La Junta and Villa Santa Lucia on our second to last day on the Carreterra Austral, Chile. The bridge names in this area read like a Who-is-Who of Chilean military chiefs.
Bridge across Rio Limay at Confluencia, about 65km North of Bariloche, Argentina. This was the first day on my bike with the new rear frame, courtesy of manufacturer Challengebikes in the Netherlands.
Road and bridge across the Embalse Piedra del Aguila, a large hydro-electrical project in the Comahue region between Bariloche and Neuquen, Argentina. I remember this stop well, as beyond that I had to climb 600m vertical.
Crossing what's left of the Rio Severuyo just South of Lago Poopo in Bolivia. At 3686m ASL this lake on the altiplano is about to dry up and already resembles the Salar de Uyuni more than the Lago Titicaca.
Bridge across a small river coming into Ilave, about 50km North of Puno, Peru. Included here more for the color and for the well-known cyclist rather than the river.
