Salonique Ca va?
"Salonique! Ca va?" was commissioned by the Museum of Photography in Salonica. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the French Institute in Salonica, I was given carte blanche to photograph the Institute for a photographic exhibition to be held at the Museum to celebrate the centenary of the Institute.
In an attempt to find a concept that would combine both the past and present of the French Institute, I decided to photograph the personnel of today wearing masks which I made out of archival photographs from the past 100 years of the Institute's history.
Teachers, receptionists, accountants, handy-men, librarians and canteen staff played along, striking poses in classrooms, behind their desks, while reading Le Monde, answering phones, eating sandwiches and giving piano lessons - daily activities which have all been part of the French Institute's day-to-day buzz for the last 100 years.
