Day hike of Mt. Whitney (14,496 feet) from Whitney Portal (8,340 feet) by the 11 mile long John Muir Trail. Passes by Mirror Lake (9,700'), Trail camp (10,000') and Trail Crest (13,650') with Ian, Will and Lew. The day before we took some photos in the Alabama Hills just east of Lone Pine (4,000').

Säntis Switzerland September 5 2010

Hike from Schwägalp (1350m or 4400 feet) to Säntis (2500m or 8200 feet) via Tierwies. Then loop hike to Rotsteinpass and Schfboden (1840m or 6000 ft) and return to Säntis (8200 feet). Descent via cable car. Hike a week after a late summer snowfall. Säntis is the highest peak in northeast Switzerland and on a clear day the views are extensive.

Blue Lake Australia July 17-19 2010

Blue Lake in the Snowy Mountains is the main place for ice climbing in Australia. This trip was early in winter, so less snow and ice than later on. The first two days were unusually sunny and windless (though still cold). The third day was more typically wintry.

Mount Shasta climb California July 1-2 2010

The Avalanche Gulch route on Mount Shasta (14,162 feet) is the standard route. The best time to do it is in late Spring / early summer when there is snow all the way from bottom to top. Then ice axe and crampons are needed. It is not quite steep enough to require a rope. For our summit day the forecast high at 14,000 feet was 25 degrees with a 30-50 mile an hour wind. It did not soften up enough to glissade (or ski) down.

Mount Shasta Glacial Ice Seminar June 1-3 2010

This was a three day course with Alpine Skills International. This year summer came late and conditions were not good for ice climbing with cloud, wind up high, and warm temperatures with high freezing level at night.

Castle Peak California Ski and snowshoe

Castle Peak is 9100'. It is about 2000' above Boreal ski resort near Donner Summit. It is easily seen from I-80 going east - look up to the left. The area is very popular with snowshoers and skiers going to Peter Grubb Hut and Andesite Peak.

Three cross country ski trips to Echo Lakes / Ralston Peak near Lake Tahoe, CA

Echo Lakes are off Highway 50 near Echo Summit. It is 1 mile to the lower lake followed by 2 and a half delightful flat miles across the two lakes. It is then a steep climb from upper lake (7400') to Haypress Meadows (8400') and to Ralston Peak (9200'). The peak is a long day trip.

Stebbins Cold Canyon Hike near Davis, CA

Stebbins Cold Canyon has a lovely five mile loop hike from 200' to 1600' with views overlooking Lake Berryessa and part of the central valley. For hiking information for this and other nearby hikes see yolohiker.org. A recent purchase of additional land by Tuleyome will ultimately lead to a fifteen mile loop hike. Tuleyome (see tuleyome.org) is a major advocate for creating the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Conservation area.
