The school carnival finally came! Wendy and Quinn bought these sunflower hats at the rummage sale in the cafeteria, and they got their faces painted.
Wendy got a kitty face.
Quinn got a nice heart.
Wendy won this spinning toy at the bean bag toss.
Quinn won this tic tac toe game from the balloon dart game.
Wendy and Quinn had already spent all of their tickets when they saw Nicki coming.
Quinn and Nicki waved to one another. Wendy was too surprised to see her to do anything. Nicki had just moved to town and was being homeschooled as well. How did she and Quinn know each other?
They hugged excitedly. It turns out that Quinn and Nicki go to the same church. Nicki is also in Wendy's Girl Scout troop.
"Do you guys want to go to the cake walk with me?" Nicki asked. Wendy shook her head no. "We would," Quinn began, "but we're out of tickets."
"Oh," Nicki sighed. "Well, I have enough for two... would you like to do it with me, Quinn?"
"Sure!" Quinn answered. "That is, if Wendy doesn't mind waiting..." "Go ahead," Wendy said. "Have fun."
So Quinn and Nicki took off together, leaving Wendy by herself. Quinn even took off her sunflower hat. Their special best friend hats. Wendy didn't like this so much anymore.
Soon, the girls returned with a huge cake Nicki had won on the cake walk. A fourth grader's parents owned a bakery and had donated several large cakes... and Nicki had won one of them.
Luck was with Nicki that day, as she also won a doll in the big raffle.
Seeing the Wicked Witch doll made Wendy feel a little green too. She couldn't remember ever feeling so jealous of someone.
She didn't really care about the doll (though she was nice) or the cake. It also seemed that Nicki had won her best friend. When Wendy's mom took them all home, Quinn and Nicki sat together in the back seat giggling.
How is this game of Quinn-in-the-middle going to end? To be continued...
