AmCham BIAC: The Business Case for Women Economic Empowerment

The American Chamber of Commerce in France and the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD (BIAC) jointly organized a workshop on Women’s Economic Empowerment at the OECD on February 2nd. There were about 100 attendees from business, government, international organisations, including speakers from Accenture, Sodexo, Renault, UBS Investment Bank, Central Bank of Italy and others. The event was Chaired by BIAC Chairman Charles Heeter with the presence and remarks of U.S. Ambassador to the OECD Karen Kornbluh and OECD Deputy Secretary-General Yves Leterme. The moderators of the three sessions were Marina Niforos, Managing Director of AmCham France, John Jarrett, Principal and Founder of Jarrett & Associates, and Ronnie Goldberg, United States Council for International Business (USCIB) Executive Vice President, and BIAC ELSA Committee Chair.

The American Chamber of Commerce in France would like to thank all the members who attended the 118th Annual General Meeting & Benjamin Franklin Celebration at the U.S. Ambassador Residence on January 25th. The members elected the Board of Directors for 2012 and speeches were made by U.S. Ambassador to France & Monaco, Charles Rivkin and AmCham France President Eric Boustouller as well as Marina Niforos, Managing Director of AmCham France & Daniel E. Harris, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs.

Annual General Meeting with Christine Lagarde

Over 280 AmCham members and guests gathered at the residence of U.S. Ambassador Rivkin for the 116th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Benjamin Franklin Birthday Celebration. Members elected the Board of Directors for 2010 (see "News" below) and listened to speeches by re-elected President Jean-Claude Gruffat, the Ambassador and Christine Lagarde, Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment. Mrs. Lagarde focused her remarks on the excellent economic relations between France and the U.S., on measures taken to address the economic crisis, and on her priorities for France in the near term. She and the other speakers made special mention of the coming into force of the protocol of the U.S. - France bilateral tax treaty, which will save U.S. and French multi-nationals hundreds of millions of dollars, further stimulating trans-Atlantic investment.

Dejeuner avec Laurent Wauquiez, secrétaire d'État à l'Emploi

On November 17, Laurent Wauquiez, Minister of Employment, addressed over 50 AmCham members at the Park Hyatt Vendome Hotel. He compared the different economic recovery models in the U.S. and France, pointing out that France, with a rise in the unemployment rate of only 20-30% did far better than most countries. This was possible largely because recovery measures were targeted at areas of immediate employment impact rather than funding consumption, and because automatic stabilizers in France take effect more quickly.

The High Tech and Telecoms News from Washington (IT/New Media Task Force Event)

Speakers Deborah Taylor Tate, 2009 ITU Laureate for Child Online Protectionand former Federal Communications Commissioner, and Ambassador David Gross, Partner, Wiley Rein and former U.S. Senior Coordinator of U.S. ITC Policy, spoke to the New Media IT Task Force. With the new Administration (including a new FCC) and recent legislative developments, the policy focus regarding telecoms industry and high tech generally is undergoing substantial change. These changes are likely to be felt not only in the United States, but also in Europe and elsewhere. The session focused on what is currently happening in Washington D.C. and its likely impact on carriers and consumers. Among other things, broadband, cyber security, privacy, and wireless issues were specifically addressed.

In 2009 the Sun Will Rise in the West (why the U.S. will pull out of the recession first)

A presentation given by top economist Marc de Scitivaux, President, Société Socofi - Les Cahiers Verts de l'Economie. Mr. de Scitivaux was one of the few commentators in France to foresee the financial crisis, starting in April 2007 in his publication "Catallaxis," and at a number of interviews thereafter. Starting your Own Business in France

On April 8th, 2009, the Entrepreneur and Professional Women's Task Forces of AmCham France gave a conference titled "Starting you Own Busineess in France". They invited a panel of experts to come speak on several topics. The speakers included Marie-José Ley Ruiz of la Chambre de Commerce & d’Industrie de Paris, who started off by answering the question "Where do I begin ?". Then Christine Costard, expert auditor, spoke of the legal, fiscal, administrative challenges posed when starting your own business in France. Olivier de Lavalette, the Regional General Manager & VP of EMEA South, Regus presented the logistical labyrinth, or finding people, places, things for your business. And finally Karen Dys, Director of AngloInfo Paris gave us some insight on PR, and getting the word out. After the presentation, guests enjoyed a small cocktail. On March 23, 2009, the Anglo Chambers After Hours Cocktail series continued, this time with the Irish Chamber! There was celtic music, green, and Irish whiskey tasting! There were members of the American, British, Canadian and Irish Chambers. It was held at the Ricard salon, who was also a sponsor in the event.

New Incentives to Attract Motion Picture and TV Production to France, New Media IT Task Force

AmCham and the NMIT Task Force was pleased to welcome François Hurard, chief advisor on motion picture issues of Culture and Communication Minister Christine Albanel. France is one of the most attractive places in the world to film motion pictures, with world-class animation studios, technologies, production facilities and talent. Serge Siritzky of Ecran Total called France the "Usine à Rêve de la Planète." To maintain its attractiveness in a competitive international environment, France has enacted new incentives to encourage international film production and animation. This presents many business opportunities. The discussion was moderated by Winston Maxwell, Partner, Hogan & Hartson, Philippe Coen, Vice President and Counsel, The Walt Disney Company EMEA, and Eric Fourel, Partner, Ernst & Young, Chair of the Taxation Task Force.
