We bought this rose bush a week ago at the Animas Creek Nursery. It just opened this morning. We went back there yesterday and bought 6 more bushes (for the ridiculous price of $3 each)
Found this tiny barrel cactus in the desert and brought it home. It should flower in a few days.
I picked up this prickly pear section last summer on a walk near the foot of the Organ Mountains east of Las Cruces. I threw it on the ground next to the alley outside our fence and give it a shot of water when I think of it. It rooted and now has a couple of new paddles budding out the side.
We went to visit our friend Ellen Tafoya in Hillsboro this afternoon. She grows Iris (as well as fruit trees and miscellaneous other stuff on her little half acre lot. She sells Iris bulbs and has dozens of varieties. Once I started taking pictures, I couldn't stop.
Alium (allium) flower at Ellens. It's related to onions and chives, I believe.
Yellow Iris from Ellen's garden
One of several iris beds. The trees are peaches and were in full bloom several weeks ago.
Love the soft lavender color.
Here's a frilly lavender variety.
The orange flower is some kind of mallow. It grows in huge drifts along the ditches on the road from T or C to Hillsboro.
Orange mallow covering the roadside. It only seems to grow in the disturbed soil along the road. The brush now greening up the desert is Creosote brush. When it rains it releases a wonderful odor.
Never saw an iris this color before
Yipes...Stripes
I'm running out of superlatives. I'll leave the rest of these captionless!
Allen Jantzi and his friend Cristina. Allen is from Homer and was visiting Chistina in El Paso. We met up in Mesilla for lunch.
We have lesser goldfinches here. They're very brave and are regulars at our feeder.
These house finches are also regulars.
Red winged blackbirds usually don't attempt to land on the feeder. They prefer to scavange whatever seeds fall on the ground. This guy couldn't wait.
There's a picture of this cactus above. I just stuck it in a pot and it's flowering.
We've got to take a drive into the desert within the next day or so and see the blooms.
We have to fill this feeder several times a day at this time of year.
