New hearth starting to take shape. Metal studs bedded in flexbond thinset mortar, over 1/4" Wonderboard, which is bedded onto 1/4" HardiBacker board, resting on the existing floor & hearth.
1/2" Wonderboard bedded in Flexbond thinset mortar over steel studs, screwed down, and ready for tile.

Cheapest tiles Home Depot sells. We have a pattern picked out to duplicate the flush hearth, we just can't afford to wait 6 weeks or more for the tile to arrive - it's getting cold!
