Carol's First Catch

Plenty of delicious salmon to go 'round! Fresh caught Pacific Chinook in 305 feet of blue water over the edge of the Monterey Canyon. Carol and Todd took the Resolution out (with Todd's friend Nathan turning all shades of green below decks) for a day of trolling with much success. Let's hope there's at least a few more good fishing days left in the season!

Backyard Visitor

It's nice to live in the country. You never know who will drop in for a visit.... The cats aren't too sure what to do with this interloper in the garden, but they are at least smart enough to stay out of his way! Las Lomas has a reputation as being one of the premier breeding grounds for fighting roosters sent to Mexico. It's not illegal to breed fighting roosters here, just to fight them, so the local farmers skirt the essence of the law by sticking to the letter. This guy isn't a Mexican fighter though. He's Cambodian. His name is Pot Pie. Pretty.

My Winter Garden

In my childhood, the end of January was marked with arctic blasts of frigid snow, ice and dead branches. Thanks to my relocation to a lovely hidden valley on California's central coast, the end of January marks the burgeoning of new life and growth.

Carol Duemler's Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2008

All photos © Carol A. Duemler, 2008. All rights reserved. Leg 5 of the Clipper Round the World sailing race started in China, took a pit stop in Hawaii, and ended in Santa Cruz, California as the only west coast USA destination for this thrilling race around the world. After sailing from Hawaii, crews laid over for almost a week of R&R before departing for leg 6 with their next stop in Panama before ending the leg in Jamaica. The US team from their home port of New York was in 9th place as they departed Santa Cruz on April 24th, with Britain, Western Australia, and South Africa respectively leading the pack. These photos were taken as the ships, each with a mixed crew of as many as 17 amateur and professional sailors aboard, jockeyed for the best start for this leg of the race! My Backyard Paradise...

A work in progress! Even with my disability, I am trying to keep as active as possible. That has taken the form of creating a nice backyard space for me to relax and read. I go outside and listen to music on my iPod and read my new Kindle in the sun during the day, and I stoke a campfire in the firepit in the early evenings. The solar powered tiki torches add a nice twinkling touch to the back yard at night!
